Virginia City is a census-designated place that is the county seat of Storey County, Nevada. It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. Virginia City sprang up as a boomtown with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first major silver deposit discovery in the United States, with numerous mines opening. At the city's peak of population in the mid-1870s, it had an estimated 25,000 residents. The mines' output declined after 1878, and the city itself declined as a result. As of the 2010 Census the population of Virginia City was about 855, and that of Storey County 4,000.

    The Fourth Ward School is an historic 4-story mansard-roofed former public school building located at 537 South C Street in Virginia City, Nevada. Designed in 1876 by architect C. M. Bennett in the Second Empire style of architecture, it originally held over 1000 students in grades 1 though 9 divided into three departments: primary ; second grammar and high school . Grades 10 through 12 were added by 1909. It graduated its last class in 1936, after which its students were moved to a new school built by the Works Progress Administration. The building then fell into disrepair and remained closed until 1986 when it was reopened as the Historic Fourth Ward School Museum. The paper was published for its first two years in Genoa and moved to Virginia City in 1860. Noted author Mark Twain worked for the paper during the 1860s along with writer Dan DeQuille. The young Sam Clemens was hired to cover for DeQuille, who took time off to visit his family in Iowa.
