Collecting Banded Ironstone
While looking for gold prospecting locations in Western Australia, I stumbled upon some beautiful looking rocks. Tiger Eye, Tiger Iron, Banded Ironstone, Rhodonite, Jasper and Petrified wood are some of the rocks I found.

Everyone who goes out hunting for gems wants to find a stone which can be cut into a beautiful gem, to be mounted in a ring, necklace or ear ring to give to someone special.
Here is a selection of such gemstones from our many fossicking trips. You'll see sapphire, zircon, pyrope garnet, topaz, quartz, beryl and other stones all found within an hour's drive of our home in Glen Innes in the New England region of NSW Australia.

On the hunt for different gemstones in the NT Australia and by chance found beautiful Amethyst Crystal Plates with large Crystal heads and stunning colors.

Where to Hunt for Rocks and Gemstones
You can spend a lot of money buying the right 4 wheel drive jeep just so you can go hunt for rocks in some mountain and worry about getting eaten by a mountain lion or You can find great deals like the one I came across where Debra had purchased rocks, gemstones and equipment from 3 different rock shops ad she was selling at a discount.

Frank Perham, a miner and mineral collector for over 45 years is one of the most renowned experts on Maine Pegmatites. His experience with granite pegmatite has lead to the success of the famous 1972 Tuesday Pocket at the Dunton Quarry in Newry, ME which a majority of some of best Maine tourmaline has been extracted from this pocket including massive green tourmaline crystals on display at the Smithsonian and Harvard Natural History museums. The other successes include the Harvard Quarry, Mt. Mica, and the Tamminen Quarry. A true rockhound legend!

Where do you find diamonds?
Where do you find diamonds?? Well, we hunted for uncut natural diamonds at Crater of the Diamonds State Parks in Murfreesboro Arkansas. The job was not easy! The days were long and hot and the mining was a bit tedious... Although the journey was quite an adventure!
