West Zealand County is a former county in the west-central part of the island of Zealand in eastern Denmark. The county was formed on 1 April 1970, comprising a few former counties. The county was abolished effective January 1, 2007, when it merged into Region Sjælland .The county was responsible for public hospitals, upper secondary schools and schools for Higher Preparatory Examination, public transport and social welfare for the disabled. Also built that year was Sorø Klosterkirke, the church where Bishop Absalon and Margaret I of Denmark were buried . Many people live in Sorø, but work either in the greater Copenhagen metropolitan area or in the town of Roskilde.

    A Viking ring fortress, ring fort or Trelleborg-type fortress is a type of circular fort of a special design, built by the Vikings in the Viking Age. They are also known simply as trelleborgs. All trelleborgs have a strictly circular shape, with roads and gates pointing in the four cardinal directions. These common structures are sometimes partially encircled by advanced ramparts, but these additions are not always circular.
