Unique Iceland: Westfjords
One of the more remote areas in Iceland, the Westfjords are a combination of striking nature and hard-working people. Formerly a region devoted almost exclusively to fisheries; now the resourceful inhabitants engage in various industries like tourism, fish farming, cultural events and more. In fact, the Westfjords are a prime example of a region where nature is the main force in shaping people’s way of life. With formidable mountain landscapes, narrow mountain passes and beautiful fjords, you come to appreciate just how hard-working and resourceful the people here are when you visit the Westfjords.

With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York.
Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja.
Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders; Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Field, and Gullfoss.

Less than two hours drive east of Reykjavik are two of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Follow the ring road for another two hours into the ethereal light of Jökulsárlón Lake, where icebergs break away from Europe’s largest glacier and float for years before tumbling out to sea.
Head north and feel the earth rumble at Europe’s mightiest waterfall, Dettifoss. Then explore the Myvatn region, a tranquil lake surrounded by nature in all its violent beauty. Take a careful walk through the boiling landscape of Namafjall, lose yourself amid the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, and peer into the caldera of Krafla Volcano.
Known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the perfect place to warm up and enjoy some creature comforts, before heading off into the wilds again. In the first episode of Circling Iceland we head to our first waterfalls starting with the Hraunfossar followed by the Kirkjufellsfoss on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Said Peninsula is certainly a place you should mark on your map due to it’s impressive coast at Arnarstapi.
On our second day we drove all the way to the north where we based ourselves near Akureyri to explore the north of Iceland starting with a hike in the Asbyrgi canyon. In the upcoming episode I’ll show you all the sights in this area more in-depth.
Traveling Icelands Ring Road is the perfect way to get to know the country on and off the tourist paths. Therefore we took about 2 weeks to get to know Iceland properly by exploring waterfalls, canyons, hot springs, glacier caves, black beaches and of course the stunning coastlines all around the island finishing off in Reykjavik with the countries biggest music festival called „Iceland Airwaves“

This is a travel guide to Norway showing the top 10 places you must see if you’re visiting. These tips are from the perspective of a photographer, but the places are perfectly fine to visit if you’re a regular traveller as well.
I’ve been fortunate enough to travel around in Norway almost contently for the past few years as a time-lapse photographer. That has given me extensive knowledge of what Norway has to offer, also outside the most touristic places. This list includes some true hidden gems you might not have heard of before.
Norway is a fantastic country, and this list could’ve been much, much longer. But these are my favorites, and I’m sure you’ll love them too.

In Part 3 of our Iceland adventure, we traveled to the remote northwest corner of Iceland known as the Westfjords. It's not a popular destination, so we wanted to showcase it's beauty. We stayed at Country Hotel Heydalur and definitely recommend it for couples and groups of friends!

Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the Westfjords of Iceland
Hornstrandir is the most isolated region of Iceland’s coastline.
Life in this northernmost tip of the Westfjords has always been harsher than elsewhere in Iceland. The locals depended on
fishing and hunting birds as the terrain was too barren for agriculture. When Iceland was modernised in the 1950s the last inhabitants departed, leaving their turf houses deserted and the region at the mercy of the elements.
In earlier times, outlaws often sought refuge in Hornstrandir, hoping to board a ship and escape Iceland. This is the northwestern frontier of Europe, almost within sight of Greenland, but English, Basque and Portuguese fishing vessels would venture here for the bountiful waters.
No roads lead to this nature reserve, you must go by boat or foot and bring provisions. The lighthouse at Hornbjarg, featured in the video, is the only accommodation apart from camping.
Polar bears occasionally drift ashore from nearby Greenland and may go unnoticed, especially in winter when the land is snowclad and human visitors are rare.
This is the sanctuary of the elusive arctic fox, hunted elsewhere in Iceland, so visitors are almost sure of seeing one. They are friendlier and more curious here than elsewhere as they are the apex predator, ideal for photographers.
Hornstrandir is home to two of the largest bird cliffs in Europe…including the 534m high sheer cliff, Hornbjarg, a must-see for travellers hiking in Hornstrandir.
