Coromandel, New Zealand | New Chums Beach | Port Jackson | Stony Bay
In this video, I share 3 adventures from my travels around the Coromandel in New Zealand.
New Chums Beach is a popular spot. The walk starts at Whangapoua Beach and crosses a tidal river. Tip: Go at low tide. The path is along the rocky beach and over the hill. It can get muddy in winter!
From Colville to Port Jackson is a scenic drive on gravel road and you'll want to stop multiple times for photos. This is the left branch at the very top of the Coromandel. Port Jackson has a campsite that's empty in winter but I've heard is packed in summer. Beyond Port Jackson, you ford a river and eventually reach a carpark at another beach with a walk that connects to Stony Bay.
Stony Bay is at the end of the right branch at the very top of the Coromandel. Again, it's gravel roads but with a few more houses. Stony Bay has a DoC campground and is the other end of the walk from Port Jackson.

Whangapoua Beach, Coromandel
Whangapoua, beautiful in it's own right, but better known as the place where you start the short hike to get over to New Chums beach.
Watch in 1080p, please give it a thumbs up if you like the footage and subscribe on YouTube.
To reach New Chums, best done during the two hours either side of low tide and beware - the track can get pretty muddy and slippery when wet!
New Chums is well worth the walk though. A beach even more beautiful than Whangapoua, but with no development in sight - for now...

Day trips from Auckland: Islands of Hauraki Gulf
Many islands are located in the Hauraki Gulf, just north of Auckland, These islands make for a very pleasant day trip from the busy center of Auckland. You can enjoy a boat ride to th eisland and escape the crowds. Here you will get an introduction to the most accesible islands, ranging from the youngest Auckland volcano ( Rangitoto) to the very popular holiday location fo Waiheke. When you are in New Zealand, and in Auckland in particular, it will be a great escape and hopefully you will enjoy (one of) the islands in the Hauraki Gulf. Perhaps you will encounter some whales or dolphins, as they are often spotted in the Gulf.
In this video you will see:
Rangitoto Island
Mototapu
Waiheke Island
Tiri tiri Matangi
Great Barrier Island
Rotoroa
One of the best places to stay in Auckland:
On the islands accomodation is more difficult and should be arranged beforehand.
Some recommendations:
On great Barrier Island:
On Waiheke Island:
On Rotoroa:
On Rangitoto and Tiri Tiri Matangi there is no overnight option.
On mototapu there is a DOC campsite

The 309 Road in the Coromandel – New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 7: Today, we take the 309 Road in the Coromandel seeing Waiau Falls and arriving in Whitianga for some classic New Zealand fish and chips!
Yesterday - Day 6 -
Tomorrow – Day 8 –
About this video:
It’s Day 7 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year and a whole week since we started our challenge of 365 activities in 365 days in New Zealand. Today’s activity is a road trip on The 309 Road in the Coromandel. Along the way, we stop off at Waiau Falls, a stunning waterfall just off the side of the 309 Road among beautiful forest scenery. The trip takes us on a winding gravel road through the stunning valleys as we travel from the west coast of the Coromandel to the east coast.
We arrive in the Coromandel town of Whitianga where we treat ourselves to a classic New Zealand meal: fish and chips! We take them down to the Whitianga waterfront, but little do we know that we are being followed... Someone, or something, is after our fish and chips!
After the fish and chips incident, we check out the relaxing Whitianga Beach for a taste of coastal life on the Coromandel Peninsula.
