The St Peter's Dom is a church in Worms, southern Germany. The Dom is located on the highest point of the inner city of Worms and is the most important building of the romanesque style in Worms. It is closely associated with Bishop Burchard and the high point of Worms' history in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was the seat of the Catholic Prince-Bishopric of Worms until its extinction in 1800. It is a basilica with four round towers, two large domes, and a choir at each end. The interior is built in red sandstone. Today, the Wormser Dom is a Catholic parish church, honoured with the title of Minor Basilica. The Jewish Cemetery in Worms or Heiliger Sand, in Worms, Germany, is usually called the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in Europe, although the Jewish burials in the Jewish sections of the Roman catacombs predate it by a millennium. The Jewish community of Worms was established by the early eleventh century, and the oldest tombstone still legible dates from 1058/59. The cemetery was closed in 1911, when a new cemetery was inaugurated. Some family burials continued until the late 1930s. The older part still contains about 1,300 tombstones, the newer part more than 1,200. Worms, Germany - home of my Oma & Opa, where I used to come visit

Worms is one of the oldest and most historic of Germany cities, but more than that, it was also the home of my beloved grandparents (meine Oma and Opa), whom I visited there as a child.
This was my first trip back in over 55 years; they have passed on and I began my visit by going to their beautiful gravesite @ Hauptfriedhof Worms aka Friedhof Hochheimer Hohe which you can read about more here:

We then did several walkabouts, which included Ludwigsplatz where there is a statue/oblelisk to Ludwig V and then the nearby memorial to Martin Luther, a major leader in the Protestant Reformation. The memorial is the largest Martin Luther Memorial in the world & you can read more about it here:

Last, but not least, we visited the ancient Niebelungen Bridge - it happened to be closed for repairs, so we were not able to walk underneath it through the archway of the giant tower. Of course, all of Worms is mentioned in the famous Nibelung Legend, involving Siegried and Brunhilde. There are whimsical dragon statues all over the city to remind everyone of the legend and also includes a statue of Hagen throwing the jewels into the Rhein (Rhine River) - it is down by the beautiful promenade along the river.
Since I was only around 8 at the time, a lot of the sights are only vague memories to me, but the emotions came back of spending time with my beloved grandparents.

Today I take you on a quick tour of some of the things to see and do in Worms.
Its the next biggest town to where I am living. A nice town with some nice cafe's ,museums and old buildings to see. Plenty of places also to have a nice meal and to sit back and relax on a nice day.

The Abbey of Lorsch is a former Imperial abbey in Lorsch, Germany, about 10 km east of Worms.
It was one of the most renowned monasteries of the Carolingian Empire.
Even in its ruined state, its remains are among the most important pre-Romanesque–Carolingian style buildings in Germany.
Its chronicle, entered in the Lorscher Codex compiled in the 1170s is a fundamental document for early medieval German history.
Another famous document from the monastic library is the Codex Aureus of Lorsch.
In 1991 the ruined abbey was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The abbey was founded in 764 by the Frankish Count Cancor and his widowed mother Williswinda as a proprietary church and monastery on their estate, Laurissa.
It was dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
The founders entrusted its government to Cancor's nephew Chrodegang, Archbishop of Metz, who became its first abbot.
The pious founders enriched the new abbey by further donations.
To make the abbey popular as a shrine and a place of pilgrimage, Chrodegang obtained from Pope Paul I the body of Saint Nazarius, martyred at Rome with three companions under Diocletian.
In 1248 Premonstratensian monks from Allerheiligen were given charge of the monastery with the sanction of Pope Celestine IV.
During the Thirty Years' War Lorsch and its neighbourhood suffered greatly.
In 1621, Spanish troops pillaged the abbey and most of the buildings at Lorsch were pulled down.
After the Archbishopric of Mainz regained possession of it in 1623, the region was returned to the Catholic faith.
However, the abbey remained a ruin and served as a source of building materials for the whole region.
The most depressed period for Lorsch was during the wars of Louis XIV of France in the late 17th century.
Whole villages in the region were laid in ruins, the homes of the peasantry were burned, and the French soldiers torched the old abbey buildings.
One portion, which was left intact, served as a tobacco warehouse in the years before World War I.
The ancient entrance hall, the Königshalle or aula regia, built in the ninth century by King Louis II, is the oldest monument of Carolingian architecture.
