Discovering Somerset (Volume 1)
This is an excerpt of a DVD produced by 1st Take. The complete film is available to order at 1st-take.com or by calling 01454 321614.
Celebrate the visual beauty, rich heritage and hidden treasures of Somerset with Glastonbury-based author Henry Buckton. Beginning in the north of the county, this first volume of an exciting new series includes visits to ancient hill forts and long barrows, such as at Stantonbury Camp and Stoney Littleton; the mysterious stone circles at Stanton Drew; the sites of medieval castles such as Culverhay, Richmont and Farleigh Hungerford; and historic battlefields at Lansdown Hill and Norton St. Philip. You will also see spectacular limestone gorges at Cheddar and Burrington Combe; the man-made lakes of Chew Valley and Blagdon; and the majestic Clifton Suspension Bridge. We discover how Bath grew from a small Roman spa town to one of the most beautiful Georgian cities in England, and how the Victorian appetite for tourism transformed small coastal villages like Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare into premier seaside resorts. What is now seen as a largely rural area actually has a strong industrial heritage. Special attention is paid to the North Somerset coalfield, which extended from Bath to Nailsea, where glassmaking and later a large cider factory were also significant. We also reveal lead mining at Charterhouse and East Harptree, a watermill at Priston and iron-making near Mells. Transport was key to industrial development and informed contributors reveal the story of the Somerset & Dorset Railway, the 'Strawberry Line' and the Somersetshire Coal Canal. We also learn about the history of Cheddar Cheese, and see how local beer is brewed by visiting the famous Butcombe Brewery near Wrington. Helped by superb modern film and rare archive material, this historical tour of North Somerset will encourage you to explore this beautiful county.

Karen Allen Lead Teacher for English St John's Church of England Primary Southport
My name is Karen Allen and I'm the Lead Teacher for English at St Johns C of E School in Southport. If, like my school, you're searching for ways to meet Ofsted's increasing expectations for handwriting, I'd like to draw your attention to a joint initiative between BIC® and handwriting experts Start-Bee.
Our school won the Gold Prize in the BiC Handwriting Olympiad 2015 and the prize was a Handwriting Match Fit Assessment for 115 Pupils. It was an eye opener. Start-Bee gave us a Handwriting Strategy for each pupil, each classroom, each Year Group and this is something we will use for our upcoming OFSTED inspection. Start-Bee have also offered to put together a Handwriting Strategy, based on the results from the Handwriting Match Fit Assessment, for our entire school.
To ensure that each pupil can benefit from the Handwriting Strategy that has been created for them, it is essential that they are offered the opportunity to flourish and enjoy enhancing their ability to further explore the benefits of being able to write legibly, fluently and excellently.
Start-Bee are committed to empowering all children, students and adults to aspire and achieve through their literacy skills. Our goal is to provide the facilities, knowledge and methodology to start that process as early as possible with Start-Bee School Handwriting.
Start-Bee has, after many years of hands-on research and dedication, produced a successful, credible and affordable method to empower the educational futures of every pupil that goes on to writing legibly and fluently with our unique Start-Bee Handwriting method.
They provide everything that you will need to start that process and this is a game changer for some pupils who are struggling with handwriting or for those pupils who are writing with very poor pencil grip technique which must be negated to ensure they can write fluently by Year 6* [SB1].
Start Bee is a licensed and patented product, which is offered for an initial period of 2 years.
Start-Bee takes handwriting beginners from making marks to confidently writing their name and establishing the correct pencil grip for pain-free handwriting.
If you're attending the Education Show in March, I'd love to talk you through our school's experience with BIC® UK and Start-Bee during one of their Q and A sessions, held in the main lecture theatre. You will be able to purchase the BIC®KIDs handwriting range, which includes graphite pencils, mechanical pencils and ballpoint pens, at a special show price throughout the event to trial with your students. In addition to this Start-Bee will be offering a 10% discount off their Handwriting Match Fit Assessment® for any school that meets them throughout the event. So I'd urge you to come and check it out for yourself at NEC Birmingham (17th-19th March).
Alternatively, please contact team@start-bee.com or 01462 379 379 to arrange a suitable time to discuss your school's handwriting needs with one of their experts. To find out more about BIC's® education resources and their handwriting range please visit bickids.co.uk. You won't regret it.

SUMMARY
=======
John Locke (; 29 August 1632 – 28 October 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the Father of Liberalism. Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as David Hume, Rousseau, and Immanuel Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that, at birth, the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to Cartesian philosophy based on pre-existing concepts, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception. This is now known as empiricism. An example of Locke's belief in empiricism can be seen in his quote, whatever I write, as soon as I discover it not to be true, my hand shall be the forwardest to throw it into the fire. This shows the ideology of science in his observations in that something must be capable of being tested repeatedly and that nothing is exempt from being disproven. Challenging the work of others, Locke is said to have established the method of introspection, or observing the emotions and behaviours of one’s self.
