The story of Yapahuwa rewinds back to 1272 where the King Bhuvenakabahu has bought the capital, which was in Polonnaruwa in that time, to Yapahuwa. He has bought the Sacred Tooth Relic with him and established the new Kingdom here. However, after the king's death in 1284, the Kingdom got abandoned and inhabited by monks.
Yapahuwa was built on a huge rock boulder resembling the shape of world famous rock, Sigiriya. It was a palace and a military stronghold against invaders who came to capture the Sacred Tooth Relic.
You can witness a small beautiful temple on the way to rock fortress, which is addressed as Yapahuwa Rajamaha Viharaya.
There are many caves discovered that were used to have a shrine with Buddha images and Brahmi script inscription.
The temple is easily reachable from the main road and one should not miss visiting this breathtaking Kingdom to acknowledge the proud yet isolated history of this unique palace that used to be a major place in this country once.

Kurunegala Ridi Viharaya (Silver Temple), Theravada Buddhist Temple in Sri Lanka
Ridi Viharaya which is also known as Silver Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in Sri Lanka. This unique temple is situated near a small village called Ridigama in Kurunegala district. It is a Theravada Buddhist temple that is believed to built in the 2nd Century by King Dutugamunu. This temple has provided silver ore to complete the Ruwanwelisaya which is the largest stupa in Sri Lanka.

The story behind this temple is a fascinating tale. After defeating Elara, a Tamil prince of Chola Kingdom, King Dutugamunu started the construction works for Ruwanwelisaya. While building this great stupa, Silver was required to build the basement of it.
Meanwhile, a group of merchants traveling from the highlands to Anuradhapura, saw some ripe jackfruit in the Ridigama area. They cut it and decided to offer the first half to Buddhist monks as a ritual. Four Arhat monks accepted their Dhana, and after that another four monks came for the Dhana. In this last four, one Arhat monk who named as Arhat Indragupta led the merchants to a path which led to a cave which contained Silver ore.
They informed King Dutugamunu about their findings and the King was delighted as it provided enough Silver ore to complete the basement of his stupa. As for the gratitude, King Dutugamunu built a temple complex on Silver ore with 300 masons under the guidance of his chief artisan Vishwakarma Prathiraja.
There are about twenty five caves around the temple which are inhabited by Arhat monks. Uda viharaya was added to the complex in the reign of Kirti Sri Rajasinha of Kandy.
If you are planning to visit this temple, you have to go about eighteen kilometers northeast from Kurunegala town. Once you arrived to a small city of Ridigama, you have to travel about two kilometers in the hills where the temple is built. It is also about ten kilometers distance from Ibbagamuwa junction, where the main road Kurunegala and Dambulla joins (A6 highway)
