Megiddo National Park, Israel
Megiddo National Park, Israel
Megiddo was a site of great importance in the ancient world. It guarded the western branch of a narrow pass and trade route connecting Egypt and Assyria. Because of its strategic location, Megiddo was the site of several historical battles. The site was inhabited from approximately 7000 BC to 586 BC (the same time as the destruction of the First Israelite Temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians, and subsequent fall of Israelite rule and exile), though the first significant remains date to the Chalcolithic period (4500–3500 BC). Megiddo's Early Bronze Age I (3500–3100 BC) temple has been described by its excavators as the most monumental single edifice so far uncovered in the EB I Levant and ranks among the largest structures of its time in the Near East. The first wall was constructed in the Early Bronze Age II or III periods. However, the town experienced a decline in the Early Bronze-Age IV period (2300–2000 BC), but the city was somewhat revived around 2000 BC. Following massive construction, the town reached its largest size in the Middle Bronze-Age, at 10–12 hectares. Though the city was subjugated by Thutmose III, it still prospered, and a massive and incredibly elaborate palace was constructed in the Late Bronze Age. The city was destroyed around 1150 BC, and the area was resettled by what some scholars have identified as early Israelites, before being replaced with an unwalled Philistine town. When the Israelites captured it, though, it became an important city, before being destroyed, possibly by Aramaean raiders, and rebuilt, this time as an administrative center for Tiglath-Pileser III's occupation of Samaria. However, its importance soon dwindled, and it was finally abandoned around 586 BC. Since that time it has remained uninhabited, preserving ruins pre-dating 586 BC without settlements ever disturbing them. Instead, the town of Lajjun (not to be confused with the El-Lajjun archaeological site in Jordan) was built up near to the site, but without inhabiting or disturbing its remains.
Megiddo is mentioned in Ancient Egyptian writings because one of Egypt's mighty kings, Thutmose III, waged upon the city in 1478 BC. The battle is described in detail in the hieroglyphics found on the walls of his temple in Upper Egypt.
Mentioned in the Bible as Derekh HaYam or Way of the Sea, it became an important military artery of the Roman Empire and was known as the Via Maris.

Description
Qaitbay Citadel, Alexandria, Egypt - Egypt Tourism
Qaitbay Citadel, Alexandria, Egypt - Travel to Egypt and let Connolly Cove give you the right plans to follow.
There are different cities in Egypt, some are worth the visit and some could be placed later in the list. Alexandria, Egypt, is considered the largest city in Egypt coming directly after Cairo and this pretty much sums up why you should place it on your plan list.
There are different things to do in Alexandria, Egypt, which are divided between historical places to visit as well as those walks which you should go through the streets and by the sea; you will enjoy the good breeze, believe us.
Your next trip to Egypt should include visiting the city of Alexandria and getting the chance to see Qaitbay Citadel which will also give you the chance to enjoy a good view of the sea with a weather you have never witnessed before.
Being one of the historical places to visit in Egypt, we have to mention that Qaitbay Citadel of Alexandria is now in the same place where the lighthouse of Alexandria used to be but which was destroyed by several earthquakes that took the whole thing down after being one of the seven wonders of the world.
The history of Qaitbay Citadel is long since different characters helped in its existence; starting from building the citadel and ending with the renovations that were done to the whole place until the 20th century to become what we are seeing at this very moment.
The best thing about Qaitbay Citadel of Alexandria is that you will enjoy the idea of seeing the actual real place from where the archers stood in the old days in order to defend Alexandria. The structure of the whole place is actually what will take the breath away; you will have to pay attention to the inside as well as the ceiling of the whole area.
On the way to the citadel, within 2 minutes walk, there is an aquarium museum which carries different species and which will be mostly liked by the kids; will not take longer then 20 minutes in it, and just in front of the citadel entrance, there is another museum for fossilized creatures including the skeleton of a whale.
Planning a trip to this place should be on the list, but you should never spend more than a few hours there and pass by these other two museums in the same day in order not to keep coming back to the same area and lose time instead of seeing other parts and historical areas of Alexandria.
Qaitbay citadel Alexandria is placed in the most visible location of Alexandria city, making it an attraction for those who want to see the best out of this place.
Qaitbay citadel opening hours are from 8 AM till 5 PM everyday and that is the reason why it is always considered better to go in the evening where the weather will be always better and it won't be much crowded.
The plus point for those visiting Egypt from around the world is that the prices are considered low for them at this point and thus they could get the chance to visit different places and do several things without having a lot of money. Qaitbay citadel entrance fees for the Egyptians is about 15 EGP and a little bit more for the non-Egyptians which might reach now 35 EGP.
This 15th century defensive fortress is located in As Sayalah Sharq, Qesm Al Gomrok, Alexandria Governorate. You could spend the whole day walking inside and outside of this castle and you could even sit there where you will be considered sitting on the sea, but it is considered better to watch out and make sure you are not wasting the whole day sitting there.
There are different fish restaurants there where you could have a proper and delicious meal and enjoy the Egyptian way of cooking it. You could also rent a boat - and you could bargain about the price - but always make sure that life vests are there and make sure that you are feeling safe with that person who will be with you on the boat.
There are a lot of things to do in Alexandria and with the good weather of this city, you will definitely enjoy every single detail of your trip, you just have to take the needed precautions and make sure you are bargaining whenever needed in order not to get easily robbed - because that's how people manage to get things done there.
Qaitbay Citadel is among the old places to visit in Egypt which will get you out of Cairo and let you see something that is not related to the capital city.
