Zaandam is a city in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is the main city of the municipality of Zaanstad, and received city rights in 1811. It is located on the river Zaan, just north of Amsterdam. The statistical district Zaandam, which covers the city and the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 76,804. Zaandam was a separate municipality until 1974, when it became a part of the new municipality of Zaanstad.

Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk, Netherlands. It is best known for its collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses. From 1961 to 1974 old buildings from all over the Zaanstreek were relocated using lowboy trailers to the area. The Zaans Museum, established in 1994 near the first Zaanse Schans windmill, is located south of the neighbourhood. Zaanse Schans derived its name from the river Zaan and its original function as sconce against the Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War of Dutch independence. It is one of the popular tourist attractions of the Netherlands and an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage . Het Jonge Schaap is the name of a wooden wind powered sawmill, located in the Zaanse Schans, in the municipality of Zaanstad. The original mill was built in 1680 and demolished in 1942. Between 2005 and 2007, a replica of the mill at the Zaanse Schans, between the mills De Zoeker and De Bonte Hen. The construction of the replica was based on detailed drawings Anton Sipman had made before the original mill was demolished.

De Bonte Hen is the name of an oil mill, located in the Zaanse Schans, in the municipality of Zaanstad. De Bonte Hen is the northernmost of the mill Schans. The original mill was built in 1693. Until 1935, the mill was preserved in its original state. This year, the mill was rebuilt. In 1975, the restoration of the mill was accomplished. Since then, the mill weekly on a voluntary basis into service. Among the mill are still the original oil cellars for the storage of oil made at the mill.

De Zoeker is the name of an oil windmill, located in the Zaanse Schans, Zaanstad. Its purpose is to press seeds such as linseed and rapeseed into vegetable oil. It is the only oil mill still in operation, and is one of five remaining oil mills in the area. The mill was built in 1672 in Zaandijk. The mill continued with few interruptions until 1968, when it was moved to the Schans. The mill is owned by the Vereniging De Zaansche Molen.

Welcome to the Zaanse Schans, a town where you’ll travel back in time to the 18th and 19th century in Holland. When you walk around you’ll feel like you’re walking through an open-air museum filled with Dutch windmills, old houses and even a replica of the first Albert Heijn with products they sold back then. Albert Heijn is a popular Dutch grocery store.

The Zaanse Schans is only 30min away from Amsterdam so if you’re in town and have time to spare make sure you come and visit. It was also the most visited place in Holland last year!

Zaandam - The city near Amsterdam where you can see unique buildings | Cities in the Netherlands #2

Zaandam is a small city 12 minutes away by train from Amsterdam, Netherlands. It's a place where you can see unique and creative buildings. Famous for its windmill town, 'Zaanse Schans' is part of Zaandam.

The landmarks here are Zaandam Station, Zaandam City Hall, Inntel Hotels. (You can see at the beginning of the video) I personally like the design of city hall.

Other things to do in Zaandam are Monet Atelier & Czar Peter House. Monet, an impressionist painter, stayed in Zaandam and left more than 30 paintings. In the atelier, you would see nice display of reproduction paintings Monet did while in Zaandam. There's also video that gives the history of Monet's time in Zaandam.

Peter the Great wanted Russia to be a powerful nation. He went to Zaandam and learned art of shipbuilding himself. He stayed in Zaandam only few days, but preservation of his house is quite good.
