4000 YEARS OLD UNDERGROUND VILLAGE
A centuries-old tradition in Sanmenxia city, Henan province in central China has seen indigenous people living underground in ancient 'pit yards'. The courtyard homes, called Yaodongs, have had six generations living under their roofs for over 200 years. The tradition in China is thought to date back over 4,000 years and have housed thousands of residents in the huge loess hills.
The origins of Yaodongs can be traced back to Bronze Age, when people lived in dwellings within deep pits and they became widely popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, the homesteads are much more modernised and many of them are equipped with electricity and other utilities. The local government of Henan has announced that it is protecting the sites and plans to turn them into tourist attractions for curious visitors.
STRUCTURES
The structures are earthquake-resistance, sound-proofing and are even energy-efficient. More importantly, they prevent floods and storms to ensure safety. The loess hills in which they were built were created over thousands of years by strong winds depositing silt earth in huge mounds. The immaculately designed cave houses are strengthened with natural materials on the pit walls, with a depth of 20-23 ft and length of 33-39ft.
A basic one-bedroom cave without plumbing is available to rent for about £21 per month, while a full house with three bedrooms plus a bathroom might sell for around £32,000.

Along the banks of the Yangtze - E3/6 - On Mao
China is one of the largest world powers but we can hardly put a face on it yet. Let alone have any idea of how the average Chinese man lives and works, or what his ambitions or fears are. Photographer Ruben Terlou took his camera along the banks of the River Yangtze, talking to the locals about the impact of the economic progress. In a six-episode series, we are taken from Shanghai, the most westernized part of China, to Shangri-La, the most authentic Chinese part, to discover the real China, 40 years after Mao's death.
Episode 3 - On Mao
Mao is alive. 40 years after his death, he is still as popular as ever. After all, he was the founder of the People's Republic. And the fact that under his administration tens of millions of citizens died of hunger and violence is counted among the 30% wrong things he did. For 70% of what he did - as the official government position claims - was good. And that 70% no doubt includes his love of swimming. At the risk of losing his life, Ruben crosses the wild River Yangtze swimming, to meet the best-known Mao impersonator of China. And he visits a unique community of fishermen who once fled the famine caused by Mao's Great Sparrow Campaign to settle in the shallow waters of Honghu Lake, where they still live in houseboats, like Kevin Costner in Waterworld.

DAQING (CHINA) LIFE: Morning walk at Li Ming Lake
This video shows you the view of late morning walk (around 7-10am). A local friend told me the morning-walker will make the lake packed in the early morning, at between 4-6am. But we're not talking about winter, though ;)
It's always nice to see so many older people are eager for exercise here..or even just morning/afternoon walk..something that I rarely see back home (Indonesia).
Hopefully my country will have the urge and commitment to manage our lakes, parks, and free public open spaces in a better way than we do now, for the better use and benefit to people.

中国高速鉄道の車窓から
2012年2月29日
中国高速鉄道,CRH(China Railway High-speed)の和諧号に乗って,北京南駅から山東省の済南西駅に向かいました。
出発から約1時間半,済南西駅が近くなった辺りの車窓から見た風景です。
古いデジカメで撮ったので,あまり画質はよくありません。
