Sailing in Monster Storms | Storm Tactics | Ships in Big Waves Heavy Seas - Sailing Aulani Aloha
Storms explodes sailing with ships. Solo sailing Aulani Aloha from the Columbia River Bar with ships as monster storm winter storm slams West Coast. The West Coast is shut down and natural disasters become unprecedented from Washington to California.
The Columbia River Bar of Astoria, Oregon is the most powerful collision of ocean and river forces on the planet.
Media coverage is caught off guard with poor weather forecasting scramble to catch up. I'm 4 days out 120 miles offshore from the Oregon California border.
These sea battles never decide who's right only who's left.
As sailors in little boats the size of life boats. We don't have the luxury of hiding 100' up in comfy enclosed watertight wheelhouses. Or lounges on 1,000' ships manned 24/7 on all decks.
We are literally part of the storm itself. Seemingly lost in between swells dealing with the waves and ripples there. We are in the trenches battling a monster that never sees us. Even when we have crew it's most always a solo operation.
How we strategically navigate prior to the monster's arrival. Then keep on thru the dark night will determine just how soon and if we live to see another day. Always keep your mind and boat ahead of the Monster's next move. Run and only wrestle when given no option.
How do we get here? Over the years we get a little dinghy and go for a stroll in the Pacific Ocean.
Day 1
The Columbia River bar reopens after being closed to an early winter storm. I have a 3 day window to voyage South clearing the rugged stormy terrain of the Pacific Northwest before the next potential storm develops. My friends in another sailboat stall in port for 2 days before leaving.
Day 2
I make my way offshore knowing storm winds will get pinched pressed by the shoreline with high cascading mountains funneling and doubling wind speeds and wave heights. An ancient tactic is employed to avoid the main front and reach the fringes of the outer flank.
Day 3
100 miles offshore a snowy white owl appears circling the mast dozens of times.
Birds of prey can get trapped inside a storm till they find a way out on the weak backside. They venture far in their curiosity. But a snowy owl here is absolutely odd, uncanny, an omen.
The mackerel sky known as Mare's Tails in folklore Makes a lofty or tall ship carry low sails or reef such in. The high cirrocumulus clouds formed by shifting high speed wind directions make known a kink disturbance in the jet stream is about to go wild.
The wind becomes ill as it moves counter clockwise across the compass from North to South then back to South West. I keep the wind to starboard to begin making my way ahead and across the path of the eye to it's weak backside.
Day 4
Wind speed begins it's rise. By noon winds are SW 25 knots. At 8 PM gale force winds commence and continue rising. All night I sail with main sail reefed in and main engine at 2/3rd's throttle. I'd be cruising at 8 knots instead over the next 12 hours I make no headway.
I'm letting the monster quickly makes it's way past me with a short brush or skirmish. I avoid getting sucked into the eye's strong side with it's dynamic trough and violent main front.
The other sailboat from Astoria gets blown 200 miles North off course when a fishing vessel sites it clocking 70 knot winds. A month later they catch up and rendezvous with me a 1,000 miles South.

Nantucket Opera House Cup, 15th - 18th August 2013, 12 meter regatta
Every year in the third weekend of August, the island of Nantucket (Massachusetts, USA), a prestigious tourist resort south of the celebrated peninsula of Cape Cod, hosts the Opera House Cup, the second leg of the North American Circuit of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge.
The Opera House Cup takes its name from the eponymous venue whose owner, in 1973, had the idea of organising a regatta reserved for wooden sail boats, and it is the oldest regatta of this kind to take place along the East Coast of the United States.

Sealion Caves, America's Largest Sea Caves Florence,Oregon
The cave system is at sea level and the ocean continually washes into the main cavern which has a floor area of about 2 acres (0.81 ha) and a vaulted rock dome about 125 feet (38 m) high. Southward from the main chamber, a low passage runs 1,000 feet (300 m) to a sea level opening. This corridor is flooded at high tide and free of water at low tide. The western entrance is a short, high passage through which the ocean washes at all tide levels. At the north, a third entrance is about 50 feet (15 m) above the ocean which serves as an elevated observation area where the entire cave system and its wildlife are visible.
Lichens, algae, and mineral stains cover the cavern walls with greens, pinks, purples, buffs, and reds on the rough surfaces, some of which are named Lincoln's Head, the Indian Maiden, and The Goddess of Liberty.
The sea level portion of this cave and the sea cliff rocks just outside the cave have become, over the centuries, the only known mainland rookery and hauling area (wintering home) of the Steller's sea lion and—to a lesser extent—the California sea lion.
The high vault is a natural resting place for sea birds. Many birds make their home at or near the Sea Lion Caves such as the pigeon guillemot, Brandt's cormorant, western, herring, and California gulls, tufted puffins, and the occasional hawk or bald eagle.
Sea Lion Caves is one of the great sea grottos of the world, comparable in size and coloration to the famed Blue Grotto in the Mediterranean.
The whale watching deck, located below the gift shop, permits a seaward view of approximately 20 miles (32 km). The deck is at an elevation of 300 feet (91 m), making it a popular whale watching post. Typically, orcas are seen migrating once a year past the Sea Lion Caves, whereas the grey whale is seen anywhere from a few months to all year long. Small groups sometimes end their migration in the immediate vicinity, feeding very close to the shore.

Dock Fishing for Fluke Flounder and Winner of Giveaway
Doing some local dock fishing to see if the better fluke have moved in.
There is a ton of small bait, peanut bunker, and large bunker here. The snappers have also moved in so it's a great time to take the kids to the docks to introduce them to saltwater fishing.
From what I hear there is a lot of short fluke around which is all I've been catching. Hopefully in a year or two all these fluke will be of better size.
I also announce the winner of the 500 Subscribers giveaway.

Oregon - Rocky Coastline - Time Lapse - Pacific Ocean - Stock Footage
Oregon Zooming out to reveal Rocky Coastline Time Lapse 001
Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, and the Snake River delineates much of the eastern boundary. It is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843, the Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, Oregon is the ninth largest and 27th most populous U.S. state. The capital of Oregon is Salem, the second most populous of its cities, with 160,614 residents (2013 estimate). With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.
Oregon's landscape is diverse, with a windswept Pacific coastline; a volcano-studded Cascade Range; abundant bodies of water in and west of the Cascades; dense evergreen, mixed, and deciduous forests at lower elevations; and a high desert sprawling across much of its east all the way to the Great Basin. The tall conifers, mainly Douglas fir, along Oregon's rainy west coast contrast with the lighter-timbered and fire-prone pine and juniper forests covering portions to the east. Abundant alders in the west fix nitrogen for the conifers. Stretching east from central Oregon are semi-arid shrublands, prairies, deserts, steppes, and meadows. At 11,249 feet (3,429 m), Mount Hood is the state's highest point, and Crater Lake National Park is Oregon's only national park.
Caught a Monster Grouper that Weighed MORE than the BOAT
Max and I left the dock with one fishing mission, catch and release a Goliath Grouper that weighed more than his boat! The total weight of the boat hull is 550lbs, so we needed to find one of the largest Goliath Groupers in all of Florida to break this number. We started the day off fishing for bonito (false albacore). Within minutes, my reel started screaming and fish on! It turned out to be a huge snook! A monster Goliath Grouper tried to eat the snook while I was bringing it in. After releasing the snook, Max and I decided to try and catch the monster Goliath Grouper that tried to eat my snook. I used a live bonito for bait and then all of sudden there he was, the largest Goliath Grouper that I've ever seen! He ate the bait and immediately started towing the boat! We estimated the weight of this Goliath grouper between 600-700lbs.

Shark Attacks our Giant Tuna
In this episode, I go fishing offshore with Carl from Slob City Fishing Charters using live bait to catch kingfish, sailfish, dolphin, and blackfin tuna. We used four kite baits and several flat-lined baits. Our first bite was a solid kingfish (estimated around 25-30lbs). Shortly after, we caught a dolphin (mahi-mahi), two smaller kingfish and a mutton snapper! While Carl was reeling in a kingfish, one of the flat lines started bending! Sailfish on! While I was fighting the sailfish, a hammerhead shark appeared out of nowhere and ate Carl's kite bait. Carl nearly got spooled by the hammerhead! As I was landing the sailfish, the hammerhead broke the line on Carl's reel. Later in the day, Carl hooked another hammerhead shark, but unfortunately, this shark broke the fishing line as well! At the end of the day, both Carl and I hooked two fish that we believed were tuna. I managed to catch mine before Carl; it turned out to be a bonito (false albacore). Carl got his fish to the boat; it was a giant blackfin tuna (over 30lbs)!! A sandbar shark attacked the blackfin tuna and nearly took half the fish! We worked all day to get that tuna bite, and at the end, the shark ended up taking half of the fish. We still had a great day on the water and caught a bunch of excellent fish!!
