Seoul International Dance Competition provides platform for aspiring Korean dancers
전 세계 무용수들의 등용문으로 우뚝 선 '서울국제무용콩쿠르' 개막
An annual dance competition is set to get underway in Seoul... featuring contemporary dance, ballet and more.
And it'll feature some of the world's top talent.
Won Jung-hwan reports.
The Seoul International Dance Competition first began in 2004... and is regarded as a gateway for young and talented dancers.
The feast of dance competition, which is being held from Friday until the 27th,… will provide a platform for young dancers to compete in their own genres,... including ballet, contemporary dance, ethnic dance, and choreography.
The competition is neither the largest in the world,... nor the most prestigious,... but for over 15 years,… it has served as a stepping stone for many aspiring young dancers in Korea.
It has produced world class talent such as Kim Ki-min,... who became the first Asian ballerino to join Russia's Mariinsky ballet group,… and Lee Sang-eun,... a ballerina in Germany's Dresden ballet group.
And the executive director of the competition... hopes to expand its reputation further.
We'll continue to invite foreign judges who lead and dance for the world's most renowned dance institutions so they can meet the best young dancers in Korea.
And she says that there is no better time than now to attract talented young dancers at the competition.
She also emphasized that the largest-ever number of dancers from abroad are taking part in this year's edition,... with some 30 percent of the total participants being foreigners.
We have to follow the global trend, and that trend right now is K-Pop. I'm trying to include K-Pop dance in our competition so it can be open to everyone. We have a lot of room to showcase our young talent.
Starting from Friday,… some 350 participants will vie for the ultimate prize at Mapo Art Center.
Those who excel,... will be offered unique scholarship opportunities, including a chance to study abroad at renowned dance schools around the world,... in countries like France, the United Kingdom, and China.
Even if they don't make it to the podium,... most of the participants will be able to hone their dance skills during the 9-day event,... with one-point lessons being offered by world-class instructors and judges.
Through this unique mentorship opportunity,... the organizers hope the competition can really serve as a gateway for dancers to reach a higher plateau in their careers.

Foreigners learning K-pop songs and dance increased 15% on-year

About 26-hundred people from other countries have taken a class on K-pop supported by the Korean government.
The Korean Culture and Information Service said Thursday that the number of people attending the so-called K-pop Academy in the past eight months has increased 15 percent on-year.
Organized by the cultural ministry, the program teaches Korean pop songs and dances to fans at 25 Korean cultural centers in 21 countries.
The dance class has been about twice as popular as the singing class.
And the scope of the students' interest has diversified to include ballads and TV drama soundtracks as wells songs by popular idol groups like BTS and Twice.
According to the organizer, 85 percent of the participants said they wanted to visit South Korea after having taken the class.
16th World Korean Business Convention kicks off in Changwon

The World Korean Business convention has kicked off in Changwon in the southeast of the country.
The three day event is designed to help entrepreneurs broaden their business connections,.. and offer better platforms for up-and-comers.
Lee Jeong-yeon is there and files this report.
The 16th World Korean Business Convention is one of the biggest networking events for Korean businesses, bringing together around 3,500 Korean professionals from around the world.
It opened on Wednesday in Changwon, a port city on Korea's southeastern coast,...
and President Moon Jae-in sent a video message to the opening ceremony congratulating the group.

I sincerely congratulate you on the opening of the 16th World Korean Business Convention in Changwon.

I hope this event will present new opportunities for the participating companies and take South Korea's economic capacity to another level.
The president added that he is especially interested in the branching out of young South Korean entrepreneurs onto the global stage and pledged that the government will offer more support for this cause.
The convention includes networking seminars and events, as well as a job fair for those looking for opportunities with Korean-led companies around the world.
Special lecturers include former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as well renowned business leaders such as LG Electronics Vice Chairman Jo Seong-jin and the CEO of Kakao, Lim Ji-hoon .
The convention will run for three days at the Changwon Exhibition Convention Center, with the closing ceremony taking place on Friday.

창원시 대원동에 있는 창원컨벤션센터(CECO)는 경남의 특화산업인 기계, 조선, 항공, 로봇, 자동차 부품 등의 상업전문전시장으로 2005년 개관하였다. 6층 규모의 건물에 옥내 전시장과 옥외 전시장·회의실·컨벤션홀·중소기업지원센터 등으로 이루어져 있으며 건물의 외관은 터빈 모습으로 기계 산업 도시 이미지를 현대적 감각으로 형상화하였고, 지붕은 한국의 전통미를 살려 우아한 곡선으로 표현하였다.

Korea's 'Little Angels' perform in India
Dancers of the Little Angels performing a traditional Korean dance in Delhi.
Organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) , famous children folk ballet troupe 'Little Angels' from the Republic of Korea performing in Delhi to express their gratitude to Indian war veterans and their families for providing medical assistance during the Korean War.
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), is an autonomous organisation of the Government of India, involved in India's external cultural relations, through cultural exchange with other countries and their peoples. It was founded on 9 April 1950 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of independent India.
The Little Angels Children's Folk Ballet of Korea is a dance troupe founded in 1962 by Sun Myung Moon, the founder of the Unification Church, to project a positive image of South Korea to the world. In 1973 they performed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The group's dances are based on Korean legends and regional dances, and its costumes on traditional Korean styles. Choral singing by the troupe in many languages is also featured.
In 2010 the Little Angels traveled to the United States to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. This was sponsored by the Korean War 60th Anniversary Memorial Committee, whose chairman, Bo Hi Pak, is the president of the Little Angels. Later that year they traveled to the other 15 nations that had sent troops to support South Korea in the United Nations force.
The Little Angels are supported financially by the Tongil Group, a South Korean business group associated with the Unification Church, through the Tongil Foundation.
