I visited one of the world's most beautiful bookstores, which is over 100 years old and a rumoured inspiration behind Harry Potter — and despite the sea of tourists, I'd tell anyone to go
The Livraria Lello bookstore in Porto is one of the world’s oldest bookstores, frequently ranked as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, and a top place to visit in Portugal. Opened in 1906, the bookstore has once a haunt of the city’s literary scene and many say it was a direct inspiration for JK Rowling and her Harry Potter books. Rowling lived in the city from 1991 to 1993 and was a frequent customer. Today, the bookstore sees 4,000-5,000 visitors a day, which can make the cramp...

Jeffrey Wasserstrom: China in the 21st Century | Talks at Google
Jeffrey Wasserstrom visits Google in San Francisco to discuss his book China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know.
About the book: Within one generation, China has transformed from an impoverished, repressive state into an economic and political powerhouse. Jeffrey Wasserstrom provides cogent answers to the most urgent questions regarding the newest superpower and offers a framework for understanding its meteoric rise.
Focusing his answers through the historical legacies--Western and Japanese imperialism, the Mao era, and the massacre near Tiananmen Square--that largely define China's present-day trajectory, Wasserstrom introduces readers to the Chinese Communist Party, the building boom in Shanghai, and the environmental fall-out of rapid Chinese industrialization. He also explains unique aspects of Chinese culture such as the one-child policy, and provides insight into how Chinese view Americans.
Wasserstrom reveals that China today shares many traits with other industrialized nations during their periods of development, in particular the United States during its rapid industrialization in the 19th century. Finally, he provides guidance on the ways we can expect China to act in the future vis-a-vis the United States, Russia, India, and its East Asian neighbors.
China's Brave New World and Other Tales for Global Times
A talk by Jeffrey Wasserstrom, Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. If Chairman Mao came back to life today, what would he think of Nanjing's bookstore, the Librairie Avant-Garde, where it is easier to find primers on Michel Foucault's philosophy than copies of the Little Red Book? What does it really mean to order a latte at Starbucks in Beijing? Is it possible that Aldous Huxley wrote a novel even more useful than Orwell's 1984 for making sense of post-Tiananmen China…or post-9/11 America? In these often playful, always enlightening tales, Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom poses these and other questions as he journeys from 19th-century China into the future, and from Shanghai to Chicago, St. Louis, and Budapest. He argues that simplistic views of China and Americanization found in most soundbite-driven media reports serve us poorly as we try to understand China's place in the current world order…or our own.Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom's other books include Student Protests in Twentieth-Century China: The View from Shanghai. He lives in Irvine, California.

Amy Tan, Where The Past Begins
Tan’s memoir is full of vivid stories about her childhood in California, her relatives in China, the losses of her father and older brother when she was fifteen, and the secret of the family her mother left behind in Shanghai. Many of these stories echo details from Tan’s award-winning novels, especially The Joy Luck Club. But here, the stories are dictated by memory, not imagination, and in telling them Tan is doing more than providing backstory to her narratives. Drawing on her own journals and the letters she exchanged with her mother, Tan explores the fine and meandering line between real life and art, and her eloquent book is at once a revealing self-portrait and a fascinating look at how fiction grows from and transforms experience.
Tan will be in conversation with Deborah Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University and author of the now-classic You Just Don’t Understand and, most recently, You’re the Only One I Can Tell.
Sixth & I and Politics and Prose present this program in partnership with The Alan Cheuse International Writers Center at George Mason University. Named in honor of the late American writer and cultural commentator—known as National Public Radio’s “voice of books”—who taught at GMU for almost thirty years, and dear friend of Amy Tan’s, the Cheuse Center celebrates the art of creative writing as a means of international dialogue, education, and understanding.

Anchee Min: 2010 National Book Festival
Author Anchee Min appears at the 2010 National Book Festival.
Speaker Biography: Anchee Min was born in Shanghai during the rule of communist leader Mao Zedong. She was chosen to become a leader of the Little Red Guards, a group of elementary school children who supported Mao's ideas. At the age of 17, she was sent to a labor camp, where she discovered the truth about the Chinese leader. After suffering a severe spinal cord injury, eventually, in 1984, she left China for America. She spoke no English when she arrived in Chicago, but within six months had taught herself the language in part by watching Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Her books have been praised for their raw, sharp language and historical accuracy. They include Becoming Madame Mao, The Last Empress and her current novel, Pearl of China (Bloomsbury), which tells the story of Nobel Prize winner Pearl S. Buck. The Works:Art & Freedom of Speech: interview with writer Ma Jian & Pussy Riot, in the studio: Eugene
The freedom to say or express what you think is important to most of us. Perhaps to few more so than artists. It’s hard to imagine a thriving art scene without it.
A number of events in the past few weeks have left many worrying about how much the space for free speech in Hong Kong is narrowing. In October, the government refused a work visa to Financial Times Asia news editor Victor Mallet. The decision is widely seen as retribution for chairing and defending a talk by Hong Kong National Party convener Andy Chan at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club. The political group had not been banned at the time. Last Thursday, Mr Mallet tried to enter Hong Kong again, this time as a visitor, and was refused entry after several hours of questioning. The day before, Chinese dissident and exiled writer Ma Jian had said on Twitter that the Tai Kwun arts centre was refusing permission for him to give two talks organised by the Hong Kong International Literary Festival on its premises. The arts centre later changed its mind. Mr Mallet’s off to an assignment in Europe, but he did say on social media that one of the things he’ll do in the days ahead is re-read George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. Or he could even read Ma Jian’s new novel, “China Dream” which is itself set in a somewhat Orwellian world.
Now in its sixth year, the four-day Musicus Festival starts this Thursday. This year, it’s highlighting Nordic music, including folk tunes and pieces on the nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish folk instrument. There’ll also be children’s concerts, classical music, and jazz. The guest performers come from as far afield as Romania, Germany, Italy, South Korea and Taiwan. The festival’s Artistic Director Trey Lee is here with guitarist Eugene Pao to tell us more.
Ma Jian talks to André Naffis-Sahely at the Edinburgh International Book Festival
Exile in London hasn’t dulled Chinese author Ma Jian’s anger at the state which permanently banned his work over 30 years ago. His biting satire China Dream takes aim at Xi Jinping’s regime and the mistruths told by the Communist Party today, centring on the mental collapse of a provincial leader haunted by guilt at his past misdeeds. More than 50 years after the start of the Cultural Revolution, ‘China’s Solzhenitsyn’ lambasts his home country. He discusses his work and ideas with fellow writer André Naffis-Sahely in this event, filmed live at the 2019 Edinburgh International Book Festival.
Dissident Chinese author Ma Jian on politics and literature
Dissident Chinese author Ma Jian is in Hong Kong to promote his new novel China Dream at the Hong Kong International Literary Festival. Two venues refused to host talks the exiled Chinese author was due to give, before the original space changed its mind and invited him back.

Hitachi Traction Lift/Elevator at Grand Hi Lai Hotel Taiwan (Retake Up)
For further information: please see this article:
The Grand Hi Lai Hotel is the five-star luxury hotel in Taiwan. This is a typical elegant 90s Hitachi elevator with custom buttons. Unusual green floor indicator for Hitachi. There are no dashes, EX, or EZ that means express zone. The door open/close button lights up when pressed. Floors 13 & 44 are skipped in this hotel. Floors 15-19 are convention center & deluxe Hello Kitty luxury suites and floors 20-25 are non-service floors reserved for tenants (may be accessed by private elevators). The hanshin department store covers floors B3-8. The floor LB is the hotel lobby, or floor M1. Restaurants are located in floors 8-12, 43, and 45 (no 44, due to superstition).
Unfortunately, this is a rushed video, due to heightened security in this hotel as well as CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras are installed in elevators and its lobbies themselves.
The other elevators serve convention center (floors 8-12, and 15-19) and entrance (floors B1, 1, LB, and 8-10).

SLOW 1985 Otis Series 1 Traction Elevators at La Grande Residence, Vancouver, BC
Filmed March 2018.
For the record, this isn't an apartment building, but instead, it is a Seperate Hotel connected to the Sutton Place Hotel and owned by the Sutton Place that unlike the Sutton Place which is a 4 star hotel, this is a 5 star hotel, and the rooms are bigger. The elevators, however, unlike the Main Hotel Elevators are MUCH SLOWER and also have basic cabs and stainless steel COPs as opposed to the Brass Series 1 COPs and Luxurious Cabs on the Main Elevators. At least they run pretty well and are clean and in fairly good shape. I believe these are Elevonic 401, but not sure, and if it is, these definitely don't live up to that name with how SLOW they are! That being said, enjoy the video!
