Observing ASEAN: Preserving the Ipoh Heritage
The tin mining boom of the late 1800s drove migration into ASEAN cities by the millions. Much of these immigrants came from South China, and into the many tin-rich towns of ASEAN. One of them is Ipoh, the tin-mining capital of the world. Today, Ipoh has slowed down from the yesteryears of before. Ibrahim Sani speaks with Lim Yi Wen, the Curator of 22 Hale Street, a quaint townhouse in today's sleepy Ipoh, and asks them, what it takes to preserve such a heritage in today's fast-paced rapidly changing world.

SW One-to-One with Joseph Victor Gonzales @ 180818 Part II
There are people who have such charisma and vibe so much so when they appear in public, the focus of attention will automatically fall on them and you would not want to miss a single scene of what is happening to them while they are with you. Well, Joseph Victor Gonzales falls fittingly into such category.
He is warmth yet not pretentious, friendly yet not superficial, with a view but not stubborn. So one will feel right in place and comfortable when striking a conversation or discussion with Joseph. A multi-talented performer, he is also a great story-teller and one will quickly be immersed by his oral narratives and steadfastly follow his recital. Hence it is not a surprise to learn that Joseph has been working as a sports commentator with ASTRO for over a decade in his early days.
SW team does not want our viewers to miss out what we have enjoyed during the interview session and so we have now divided the interview with Joseph into two parts.
Part 1 of the interview covers Joseph's early journey until his time at ASWARA.
Part 2 was more comprehensive where the discussion went deeper and wider. For ease of reference, the time scope of the interview is as follows:
00:06 Why did you leave Malaysia?
03:24 How is Hong Kong?
05:50 What is the difference between working in Hong Kong as compared to working in Malaysia?
06:56 What is dance science and technology?
08:33 Can you become rich as a professional in the industry?
11:22 Where do you see the direction of Malaysia's arts and culture especially for the young generation?
15:15 Do you miss performing on stage?
16:27 My mum and I
17:48 Are you proud of your achievements?
Again, SW would like to thank the guests for our August month, Joseph and Rosnan Rahman for their time and their generosity in granting us the interview session despite their hectic schedule and allow us the luxury of learning so much more about traditional and contemporary dance movements in Malaysia. Thank you. ????????
May the force be with you.
We meet every 3rd Saturday of each month at 22 Hale Street Ipoh, from 2.00 pm to 5 pm.

Sharpened Word Ipoh@190427 with Tan Sri Dr Fong Chan Onn
When we went to meet Tan Sri Dr. Fong in March and tried to convince him to be our guest speaker for April, little did we realise that he was actually ready to say no to us. Nevertheless, perhaps our charm has won Tan Sri over and he did not have the heart to reject us during the meeting. We only realised his hesitation then when he was here with us over the weekend. Well, that was indeed a close one.
We were more shocked when we realised that this was Tan Sri's first photo exhibition and it was held in Ipoh instead of KL. Hence we were very grateful for Tan Sri’s trust in us and the inseparable husband and wife team has also graciously granted us a full two days with us to make both the exhibition and talk a reality.
From a minister who took a year of sabbatical and travel countrywide to make a photo book on Chinese primary schools back in the year 2015 to winning multiple international photography awards, Tan Sri has indeed found a second wind in his life since retired from politics. He even joked about how bad his photos were in the photo book compared to what he is able to capture now. However, it was that very first step, that moment when he decided to use images rather than words to capture a factual history of Malaysian Chinese education that has transformed him and charted his course to this creative artistry path. It was his relentless and strong desire to learn that determines his success as a photographer. It is safer for him to convey his view about people and life via images instead of words. “I don’t have to worry about Minister calling me up and asked me why I write what I write or getting criticism from a young punk on my views”, he quips.
But is that all we can take away from the session? Obviously not. As one of our volunteer, Yasmin Yusoff has observed, it was his child-like innocence that has captivated us. His poise and thirst for knowledge and wisdom, his ability to see the positives amongst the negatives, as clearly demonstrated from his visual creations that make his works stand out among the best.
Our guilt is that we only wish to see more of Tan Sri Dr. Fong’s amazing works in the coming years.
We meet every 3rd Saturday of each month at 22 Hale Street Ipoh, from 2.30 pm to 5 pm.

SW190622 with Dr. Chuah Guat Eng
As predicted, the team, together with a group of mostly young audience, had a swell time with Dr. Chuah Guat Eng in our June session where she talks about the secrets of writing with an authentic voice.
There are plentiful of good local writers and there are plentiful of teachers but there are certainly not many who can write and speak flawlessly like Guat Eng and she demonstrated her eloquence and creative skills in a short span of 3 hours with the group.
The team has edited a short video clip of her session but truthfully, it is simply insufficient to showcase her prowess in writing and her way of disseminating her knowledge and experience to the crowd.
Thank you again Guat Eng for giving us a wonderful Saturday afternoon experience.
We meet every 3rd Saturday of each month at 22 Hale Street Ipoh, from 2.00 pm to 5 pm.

SW One-to-one with Rosnan Rahman
It was the start of a one-week school break when we conducted our Aug session. Naturally, PLUS highway and Ipoh, a town which received numerous accolades as a newly found eco and heritage tourist spot in 2018, was inundated with outstation traffic. Our guest speakers were not spared the onslaught and were late. Nevertheless, Rosnan was as ever graceful, calm and collected and despite the short time window, still generously granted us a one-to-one session where our seasoned interviewer, Puan Aida Nazeri, sat down and spoke to him elaborately on Mak Yong and Pak Yong movements in Malaysia.
As in many other traditional arts and performance, Mak Yong movement, led by only a handful in the country, is fighting hard to retain its past luster and to lure its audience back to appreciate and enjoy its narratives. Certainly, being a Mak Yong or Pak Yong dancer is no mean feat as one must possess the combined talents of singing, dancing and acting before he or she can be proclaimed as a performer. Pak Yong, the male performer, is even rarer nowadays and Rosnan Rahman is seemingly the sole performer among the new generation, which makes this interview a precious one indeed.
Below is the timeline of the interview and the respective topics discussed, for ease of audience:
00:17 How do you get involved with Mak Yong dance?
03:15 Mak Yong development in Malaysia
04:38 Who is Pak Yong?
05:43 Current Mak Yong development in Malaysia
06:40 What does a Mak Yong performance entails?
07:26 How regular is Mak Yong performance shown in Malaysia?
08:39 How is Mak Yong performance being passed on in Malaysia?
10:57 How do you sell Mak Yong performance to the audience and the issues you faced in promoting Mak Yong in Malaysia?
17:28 Closing remark
Despite limited resources, SW team will continue to conduct in-depth discussions with our monthly speakers in the hope of capturing the knowledge and the wisdom of these seasoned men and women, giving pointers and shedding lights to others who shared the same interests.
Enjoy!

Pete Teo The Baddie in the Movie Ghost In The Shell
It was almost exactly a year ago when Pete Teo came to Ipoh to celebrate Malaysia Day with us and together with the other guests spoke about Yasmin Ahmad and her legacy. The team quickly took the opportunity to grab hold of Pete and a chat with him about his work, his career and his plans. It is almost a year now since we the interviewed him and we would now like to showcase a short clip of him talking about his involvement in Scarlett Johansson’s blockbuster movie “Ghost In The Shell”.
As with any alpha male, Pete is all so excited when he talked about Scarlett. Who wouldn’t, right?
Anyway, hope you all enjoy this preview of his upcoming full-length interview.

SW One-to-One with Sarah Joan Mokhtar 190914
SW had the honour of Datuk Lat’s presence during our second anniversary in Sept 2017 to talk about his work and career. 10:34 The secrets of becoming a good cartoonist or illustrator

SW One-To-One with Pete Teo @ 180916
Question : How do we make Yasmin Yusof feel like 16 years old again?
Answer : Get her to invite Pete Teo and make him say yes.
This was the challenge we put to Yasmin and indeed she passed with flying colours. Not only did we get Pete Teo to celebrate Malaysia Day with us in 2018, Pak Hassan and Datin Orked Ahmad also joined SW and the audience as part of SAMA SAMA Perak celebrations and spoke about the legacy of Yasmin Ahmad, one of the most adored local movie directors who sadly has left us in such an unexpected and untimely manner.
Knowing this is a chance not to be missed, we asked Pete for an interview and he has graciously accepted it, and the result is the attached video that we have now put up for our audience.
Well, indeed, Pete has gone through the whole nine yards. He studied law and philosophy, taught in London School of Economics, make cult music in Hong Kong, climb the local pop charts, starred in movies, screen write, composes original scores before finally started to direct shorts and films. The ripples that he created from the local political reformed videos have helped sparked and instilled civic and political awareness of a citizen towards his motherland and went on to inspire the younger generation to question the norm and challenge what is right in their surroundings.
It was the struggle that saw him make new accomplice and acquaintances; those who share the same view and the same dream into making this country a place that they will treasure and love and pledge their undying loyalty to, despite the chaos and unjust happening right before their very eyes.
Despite his star-studded achievements, many still may not know who he is but then many will be familiar with his works - 15 Malaysia, Hari Malaysia and Here In My Home just to name a few - that he has produced over the years that still stir our hearts.
Despite the limelight, Pete was very uneasy when he has to speak of himself in front of the camera. Only when we spoke about his works and his working relationships with his peers especially Yasmin Ahmad, then he started to be more relaxed and spoke his mind.
The breakdown of our interview is as follows:
00:25 How did you break into the music scene?
02:54 How did you get involved with the film industry?
07:59 How did your professional relationship with Yasmin Ahmad flourish?
11:58 Your foray into scriptwriting
13:03 Your relationship with Malaysia
15:56 Your view on the current government (after GE14)
18:24 Our duty as a citizen
19:06 What are the things that made you proud to be a Malaysian?
21:58 What else would you want to do going forward?
We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we do!
We meet every 3rd Saturday of each month at 22 Hale Street Ipoh, from 2.30 pm to 5 pm.
