CHINA: SHANGHAI: PREPARATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS
Mandarin/Nat
Two decades of economic reforms have brought China's urban population unprecedented wealth - a wealth that is clearly evident in the current holiday season.
In Shanghai, China's biggest city, residents and shopkeepers have been making elaborate preparations for Christmas.
Nanjing West Road in Shanghai - in many ways this street captures the city's frenetic economic growth, with its colonial buildings covered in Chinese signs.
The city's main shopping thoroughfare has seen a record peak in consumption this month, with crowds of shoppers filling the pavements.
Everywhere on the streets people are preparing for Christmas, a holiday best known in China for that popular capitalist activity - shopping.
Shanghai was the starting point for China's open-door economic policy, launched nearly 20 years ago by the nation's paramount leader, Deng Xiao-ping.
The success of these reforms is reflected in the fact that average household incomes in Shanghai have nearly tripled in the past six years.
The jump in disposable income has resulted not only in an increased ability to buy more but also in a readiness to celebrate consumption.
And what better opportunity to do it than at Christmas.
Shanghai's shops are piling on the gifts and decorations, many of which were first produced in China for export to the U-S and European markets.
They are now widely available in the domestic market.
Off-shoot industries like Christmas greeting cards are also enjoying the consumption boom, showing just how comfortably the Chinese have embraced Western traditions.

After all, it is a western festival instead of a Chinese one, but with the opening door to the outside world policy it seems that a lot of things are getting into international tracks, even western festivals are now being celebrated here. We love to enjoy ourselves in these festivals.

Some people, however, prefer to engage in slightly less traditional western activities at Christmas.

For the Chinese, celebrating Christmas is singing karaoke, dancing
and dining out together.

Christmas is also the time for enjoying traditional Chinese sweets.
These are called Tang-hu-lu - sugar-coated candy on a stick.
Fueling the Christmas shopping craze in Shanghai and other big cities is the opening of giant department stores, like this one - the New World Shopping Centre.
The sprawling mall offers shoppers seven floors to trawl through.
Consumers can find anything from Chinese handicrafts to fine jewellery, although most Chinese seem to be window shopping rather than buying.
Spending in most cases is not likely to exceed a few hundred renminbi (50-60 dollars), despite an average monthly income of 800 renminbi (nearly 100 dollars).
But shopkeepers in Shanghai say consumption is on the rise this year.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
In the past, fewer people accept Christmas. Now it is being accepted by more and more people so the amount of customers for Christmas shopping is becoming much bigger, and when the day is coming close a lot of people come to ask us whether we have the Christmas gifts ready.

A major beneficiary of rising consumption is the toy industry.
Toy departments in stores are ringing up the highest sales, especially as China's one- child-per-family policy means children enjoy their parents' undivided attention.
At the top of many wish-lists is a skiing Santa Claus robot.
A traditional western favourite - the electric train - still attracts a fair amount of attention.

MANGO SS '09 - New flagship store in Shanghai
WE PRESENT OUR NEW FLAGSHIP STORE IN SHANGHAI, ON THE MOST POPULAR PEDESTRIAN STREET IN THE CITY
Last Thursday night, on 12th March, we presented our flagship store on the bustling Nanjing Road. Not only is it the most popular shopping street in Shanghai, it is in fact the worlds busiest shopping street and has been the centre of commerce in Shanghai for more than a century.
Isak Halfon, MANGOs Expansion Director and Associate Partner, who hosted the event, declared: We are very proud to be able to open this flagship store here in Shanghai. China is a very important market for MANGO.
The evening was not to be missed by the most important faces in Shanghais fashion and social circles, who were present at the event. Crowds gathered outside the store to watch invited guests such as Antonio Segura, Spanish Consul General in Shanghai, Taiwanese TV host Wu Pei Ci and top Chinese fashion model Shi Zhou Liang. Also present were many of the major Shanghai and Beijing media corporations and key members of the Spanish media who were given a sneak preview of the new store.
Wu Pei Ci, dressed in MANGO for the occasion, opened the ceremony declaring that MANGO means fashion and this is what we want to share with you today, in this nice environment and making sure that you enjoy the party together with us. Shi Zhou Liang, dressed in an outfit from our Spring/Summer 09 collection, explained that MANGO is full of sunshine and energy. It brings Spains local characteristics to Shanghai.
Special guest DJ Ben Huang supplied music throughout the store as guests enjoyed MANGO cocktails created especially for the occasion. During the sneak preview, several models showed off the most elegant MANGO outfits for the current Spring/Summer 09 season.
Following the store opening party, elite VIP guests gathered in the new Park Hyatt private dining area located on the 93rd floor of the brand-new, world-renowned Shanghai World Financial Center, the highest tower in China. In a sumptuous private dining hall, a fabulous dinner was served and our special guests had the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views over the Pudong and Puxi skyline.
The new flagship store is over 700 m2 and is located in the shopping mall Plaza 353 that was originally constructed in the 1930s to house important public offices. The mall is located on the citys main avenue, Nanjing Road. Recently restored in order to conserve its unique Art Déco architecture, the building is an emblematic location of great cultural significance in Shanghai.
After opening this store, we have also opened a corporate store at Shanghais Super Brand Mall, in the heart of the booming Pudong business district.
