Businesses suffer as fearful Turks drink at home
(18 Jan 2017) LEAD IN:
Bars and restaurants are empty and closing at the heart of Istanbul as customers have been driven away since the attack in Reina on New Year's Eve that killed 39 people.
STORY-LINE:
This is the 15th July Bridge that connects the European and the Asian side of Istanbul over the Bosphorus Strait.
Under the European side of the bridge is the Reina Club, that can almost be seen from this 5th Floor Restaurant terrace.
It is Saturday, but there are only four customers in the usually busy eatery near Taksim Square, where the secular elite, artists and foreigners have enjoyed cocktails and international cuisine since it opened in 1993.
Actress Yasemin Alkaya opened then this restaurant and after years of bureaucracy she managed to get an alcohol license, a visionary business move as the neighbourhood of Cihangir, where it is located, was turning into a bohemian area for professional and secular Turks. It has had years of success.
But since the Gezi protests against government conservative regulations ended in 2013 the business has been in decline. And after a year of terror attacks - particularly since the Reina Club attack - customers are afraid to come here.
We hear all these scenarios like don't go to this market, or don't go to church, or don't go to mosque or school. Every day we hear something. And of course it terrorises you. I mean, once or twice you say no, no, no, then after that you become scared, and I understand people of course, people started to stay at home, says owner Yasemin Alkaya.
Last Christmas and New Year's Eve was the first time that the restaurant wasn't fully booked and had last minute cancellations. That followed more than 30 attacks since mid 2015 in Turkey by assorted militias.
In the last few years, Alkaya has closed the restaurant temporarily for a couple of weeks after the holiday period for renovations, but this year she is closing earlier and for a longer period of time due to the risk that her restaurant may become a target.
This year it will be better to close it right now, because the schools are closing, and there are many saying that something will happen, she says.
The restaurant, which is due to close temporarily this week, is located a few metres away from Mis Street, adjacent to Istiklal Avenue and a few hundred metres away from Taksim Square.
The bars in Mis Street, where young Turks who drink alcohol usually gather, are also unusually empty on a Saturday evening.
Among the few customers of Bodega Bar is Seyitxan, a 37 year-old Kurd who lost his job as a waiter just a few days ago due to the decline in business.
He says liberal Turks keep drinking, but not in bars and restaurants, but at home, as there is no safe place to enjoy Istanbul nightlife.
People they are not choosing to drink outside, they are afraid, they are choosing to buy their drinks, drink it at home, they don't feel in themselves they are safe outside because, okay, before dangerous places, area, was (were) Beyoglu, but now in Reina, Ortakoy, and before, Besiktas, you know. Now everywhere for them is dangerous, explains Seyitxan.
Only cats seem unafraid of walking around empty terraces and bars, but this may also be seen as an ill-omen.

Entry Title: Istanbul (Intrepid tour)
Entry:
ISTANBUL: Day 1: My flight Duabi to Istanbul was on a newer Emirates plane and that made all the difference. A very enjoyable flight. When I arrived at Istanbul airport there was a massive line for the passport control. 40 minutes later when I arrived at the desk, the guy flicked through my passport and said You buy visa and pointed further along the hall to a small visa window. I went and bought a visa and lined up again. They should really have better signage to let people know where and when they need to buy a visa. After I collected my bags and got some money from the ATM I headed out to find a map and a taxi to the hotel. On my way I got stopped by a guy in uniform. He showed me his badge and said he was a tourist information worker. It turns out he wasn't. He was working for a bus company that delivers you to your hotel for 40 lira. I decided that that wasn't the go and got a taxi instead - costing under 30 lira. However, the taxi driver was a complete maniac. He was going 130km/hr in a 50km/hr zone at one stage, was swerving between lanes and stopping to chat to other taxi drivers along the way. But he got me to my hotel and the ride was a fun one so I'm not complaining. After I checked into my hotel I went and had dinner. Because I was by myself, the waiters were happy to chat to me, which was great. They each speak several languages to cater for the tourists - Turkish, English, French, Italian, Spanish - seems to be the minimum. We shared a few laughs when their spruiking attempts failed or they guessed the wrong language to fit the tourist. It was a very enjoyable meal and despite being quite expensive I think I got my moneys worth in entertainment value. Day 2: I got up fairly early because I thought that I would have to vacate my single room and move to a twin room for the Intrepid tour. It turns out that 3 people had pulled out of the tour so I was lucky enough to have a single room for myself. I went and had breakfast at a local café and ordered a 'Turkish Breakfast'. It was very refreshing (a contrast to the breakfasts in Hong Kong) and consisted of cucumber, tomato, salami, fetta, and bread. I felt healthier after eating it. I then went for a bit of an uneducated wander and ended up in the Grand Bazaar. It is a massive place with over 4,000 shops selling a range of items from rugs to fake polos to jewellery. At one stage I was pulled aside by a guy selling jeans. He took me into his shop and showed me a pair of jeans. I didn't really want them but asked how much anyway. He said 90 lira. I kept saying no and eventually he offered 20 lira. I didn't really want them so I still said no. He wasn't very happy that I refused his best offer. At 2pm it was time to meet my group for the next 8 days or so. They are a nice bunch - one older couple, one young couple, one father and son, one 20yr old girl from the US, and one 30ish girl from Canada. A fairly diverse group. The tour leader is a Kiwi named John. After getting the formalities and the introduction out of the way, we went for a locally guided tour of some mosques and the grand bazaar. It was interesting chatting again to the Turkish guide about everything from Harry Kewell and soccer to touring around Asia. After the tour we went and had dinner as a group in a rooftop Turkish restaurant. It was a good meal with great company. This was followed by a visit to a Turkish teahouse for most of us. We drank different flavoured tea, watched a whirling dervish do his thing, played backgammon, and smoked from an apple flavoured Nargilie. It was a very Turkish experience and I was happy to have been submerged into the culture so soon. Day 3: We went on a little walking tour of the back streets of Istanbul in the morning. After looking at a couple more smaller mosques, we went off on our own. I spent most of the 'free time' checking out the sites with Sheila (the American) and Jamie (the Canadian). First stop was the old ...
