Shinjuku's Golden Gai: Tokyo Travel Vlog
In this episode, I explore a popular area of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district called, the Golden Gai. This 1 km perimeter stretch is home to around sixty tiny bars, pubs and izakayas.
Most of these establishments have the capacity to hold 8-10 people at a time. Light snacks are served as well as alcohol of course. Smoking is permitted inside, which took some getting used to, coming from Toronto, Canada, where smoking inside non-residential dwellings, isn’t permitted.
The area is popular among locals and tourists alike, and gets fairly busy even on a weeknight but, of course, this is Tokyo.
Despite that, there’s still a fairly laidback, easy going vibe here. The camaraderie and rapport I observed between customers, bartenders and other patrons, suggests that many of these venues see frequent goers.
For me, what I enjoyed most were the neon filled lights sprinkled throughout the narrow, commuter friendly streets and alley ways. The sake (Japanese alcohol beverage) was also a delight, second to none as a matter of fact, and I share that and more with you here.

Kabukicho is a district located in Shinjuku ward, in the West of Tokyo. While the whole family can visit it throughout day time, there is a strong adult atmosphere once the moon has risen. Under the highlighted signboards, popular bars neighbor more private places such as love hotels and soap land where prostitution sometimes happens.

One natural western reflex is to think about Tokyo as being a capital with all it implies, including dark corners where it is not advised to hang out. If we had to absolutely find one of these places in the Japanese megacity, Kabukicho would be the most legitimate corresponding to this role. But it would be exaggerating to describe it as impracticable. This district, stuck in the nucleus of Shinjuku, is rather a pleasure place which never sleeps, even more perverted than Roppongi, but never dangerous nor mean as long as we do respect some quite obvious rules.
To be honest, Kabukicho acts just like the two sides of the same coin. During the day, the district seems very quiet and wise, with big classic theaters, batting centers, some big hotels and restaurant owners who nicely clean or smoke a cigarette in front of their doors. Up to the end of the 19th century, this district called Tsunohazu was just a vast swamp zone. Later, World War 2 bombings destroyed the residential areas. During the reconstruction, the commercial district was supposed to be built around a kabuki theater, which finally was never built. Only its name stayed in History.
It is during the nights that Kabukicho’s streets become alive, in an overbid of luminous signboards with deafening music escaping from the houses. This is the heart of the district: tons of bars (also gay and lesbian ones), night clubs, karaokes, izakaya, pachinko rooms, love hotels and other kyabakura (cabaret-clubs for hosts and hostesses). While digging a little deeper, we can even discover strip-tease clubs and soap lands where prostitution is not even hidden.
We count several hundreds or even thousands of these night institutions more or less lawful. It is obviously impossible to get official statistics of this district which tends to disturb the municipality, as the Tokyo Olympic Games are coming around the corner.

Restaurant: No Meat No Life
This restaurant had very good quality meat but the portions were very small and it is definitely pricey.
Golden Gai is a place in Shinjuku with a lot of tiny bars, popular to foreigners as well. A lot of them have a charge, kind of like an entrance fee so be aware of that. The bar we went to is called Albatross, which had really cool music, has a jazzy feel to it. They even had cards that we used to play King's cup with!

Golden town- Shinjuku-Tokyo
It is a restaurant area located in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo.
A narrow section of about 0.66 ha is lined with low-rise wooden tenements, and there are over 200 small eating places.
In the past, there were a lot of distinctive shops such as Society of writers and critics Bar, and it was known that a lot of cultural people such as writers, editors, film directors and actors gather as regular customers.
From such a background, it has become one of the origins of subculture and underground art in Tokyo.

It is composed of a network of six narrow alleys, connected by even narrower passageways which are just about wide enough for a single person to pass through.
Over 200 tiny shanty-style bars, clubs and eateries are squeezed into this area.
●History :
Golden Gai was known for red light area before 1958, when it`s became illegal.
Since then it has developed as a drinking area, and at least some of the bars can trace their origins back to the 1960s.
In the 1980s, many buildings in Tokyo were set on fire by Yakuza, so the land could be bought up by developers, but Golden Gai survived because some of its supporters took turns to guard the area at night.
