SIXTY STONE MOUNTAIN 六十石山 Liù Shí Shí Shān Liu Shi Dan Mountain
Liushidan or Lui shi shi shan Mountain literally translates to Sixty Stone Mountain is located North-East of Fuli Village (富里). Liushidan Mountain is situated at an elevation of around 932 meters above sea level. And it is well-known for its daylily flowers which bloomed once a year between August and September, covering at least almost 400 hectares. It is an extremely popular destination for local Taiwanese tourists during the summer holidays . Daylily flowers are known as “Day Flowers” because it only takes one day for a mature bud to blossom. They are known as Golden Needle Flowers for their golden stems and Tiger Lily. The golden stems are edible and it can be cook into deep-fried, added into soups or stir-fried though based on my taste I felt that they have not much taste at all. There is something I felt aftertaste that I dont like so much. But it's good to health I guess. Flower buds are harvested daily and dried to market. However, they also preserved some of the buds to be left untouched to bloom for the tourist viewing . A trip away to Hualien or Taitung is not complete without visiting Luishidanshan during August and Seotember. The entire Sixty Stone Mountain is an ensemble of fields, hills and mountains offering visitors an expansive view of the surrounding fields while looking down from the top. There are 10 pavilions built around the land for visitors to appreciate the breath-taking views of the mountain. The blooming season of the Daylilies occupy majority of the land start from 200 masl up to the top of the mountain that creates a picturesque scenery just like one out of a painting. The named Sixty Stone Mountain derives from two legendary story. The first story is happen during the Japanese colonial period. The japanese discovered a camphor forest on the mountain so to engage in the production of camphor, all the trees there were cleared away. After the trees were gone, sixty large stones could be seen scattered over the land. The one that shown in one of my photos. And they called it Sixty Stone Mountain hence. You can see the whole plantation of daylilies on the highway too. The top of east valley rift shine like a golden cone of icecream if viewed on the road. Actually it is part of my itinerary during my last visit at Hualien week before together with my bradbuddies but we failed because I understimated the lenght of time travel up to the mountain from Hualien Train Station. But it end with dismays when we learned that it will consumed more than 3 hours if we take Hualien bus. I thought I would'nt experienced it at all . But God sent angel after few days when she see me in distress. This journey to Sixty Stone Mountain is credited to sis Shiela Castleville. She is the one who make an extra effort to bring me back to Hualien.
