9th of April Park (Tbilisi, Georgia) / 9 აპრილის პარკი
The April 9 tragedy (also known as Tbilisi Massacre, Tbilisi tragedy) refers to the events in Tbilisi, Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, on April 9, 1989, when an anti-Soviet demonstration was dispersed by the Soviet Army, resulting in 20 deaths and hundreds of injuries. April 9 is now remembered as the Day of National Unity (Georgian: ეროვნული ერთიანობის დღე erovnuli ertianobis dghe), an annual public holiday.
The April 9 tragedy radicalised Georgian opposition to Soviet power. A few months later, a session of the Supreme Council of Georgian SSR, held on November 17–18, 1989, officially condemned the occupation[citation needed] and annexation of Democratic Republic of Georgia by Soviet Russia in 1921.
The events of April 9 also gave rise to the so-called 'Tbilisi Syndrome'. This syndrome was characterized by the a reluctance of military officers and soldiers to take any tactical decisions or even obey orders without a clear trail of responsibility to a higher authority. It arose because of the Soviet leaderships refusal to take responsibility for the orders to clear the square and the commission report's and Shevardnadze's criticism of the military in general. 'Tbilisi Syndrome' continued to spread in the coming years, especially following event in Baku and Vilnius, and contributed in 1991 to the refusal of soldiers to prevent demonstrations during the August 1991 putsch.[13]
On March 31, 1991, Georgians voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from the Soviet Union in a referendum. With a 90.5% turnout, approximately 99% voted in favor of independence. On April 9, the second anniversary of the tragedy, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia proclaimed Georgian sovereignty and independence from the Soviet Union.
A memorial to the victims of the tragedy was opened at the location of the crackdown on Rustaveli Avenue on November 23, 2004.
Tbilisi massacre on April 9th, 1989
The April 9 tragedy (also known as Tbilisi massacre or Tbilisi tragedy) refers to the events in Tbilisi, Georgia. On April 9, 1989, an anty- Soviet demonstration was dispersed by the Soviet Army. The stampede following the attack resulted in the death of 19 people, among them 17 women. Autopsies conducted on the victims concluded the direct cause of death of all those who died, with the exception of one case of serious skull and brain injury, was suffocation (asphyxia) caused by both the compression of the body and the inhalation of chemical substances. April 9 is now remembered as the Day of National Unity. In this time I have been working for a TV reporter for the Russian Channel ( Ostankino) and covered the tragedy with my cameraman Georgi Bazadze.

MPs paid tribute to the victims late last night by laying wreaths at the memorial and expressed condolence to family members of the victims.
Irakli Shikhiashvili, Chairman of Sakrebulo (City Assembly) and Sakrebulo members brought flowers and lit candles. Church persons and believers performed players.
Representatives of non-parliamentary political parties arrived at April 9 Memorial and recalled the events taking place in Tbilisi 25 years ago.
Members of Georgian Young Constitutionalists' Association organized a live chain and decorated the memorial with flowers symbolically at 4 AM when the anti-Soviet demonstration was violently cracked down.
Several incidents took place at April 9 memorial at Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi last night. A bunch of flowers decorated with a band in Russian flag's colors caused irritation of the gathered citizens. People burnt the band.
[Afterwards it appeared to have been the wreath of the Slovakian representation - being misinterpreted as the Russian]
The situation turned tense once again when Nika Melia, candidate for post of Tbilisi Mayor of the United National Movement (UNM) Party arrived at site. Former political prisoners verbally insulted Melia. The police discharged the tension.

Today is the 22nd anniversary from April 9, 1989 tragedy, which refers to the events in Tbilisi, Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, when an anti-Soviet demonstration was dispersed by the Soviet Army, resulting in 21 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Thousands of demonstrators were poisoned with unknown gas.
The protests reached their peak on April 4, 1989, when tens of thousands of Georgians gathered before the House of Government at Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi. The protesters, led by the Independence Committee (Merab Kostava, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, Giorgi Chanturia, Irakli Bathiashvili, Irakli Tsereteli and others) organized a peaceful demonstration and hunger strikes, demanding restoration of Georgia's independence.
Local soviet authorities lost control over the situation in the capital and were unable to contain the protests. First Secretary of the Georgian Communist Party Jumber Patiashvili asked USSR leadership to send troops to restore order and impose curfew.
In the evening of April 8, 1989, Colonel General Igor Rodionov, Commander of the Transcaucasus Military District, ordered his troops to mobilize. Moments before the attack by the Soviet forces, the Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II addressed the demonstrators asking them to leave Rustaveli Avenue and the vicinity of the government building due to the danger which accumulated during the day after appearance of Soviet tanks near the avenue.
The demonstrators refused to disband even after the Patriarch's plea. The local Georgian militsiya (police) units were disarmed just before the operation. On April 9, at 3:45 a.m., Soviet APCs and troops under General Igor Rodionov surrounded the demonstration area.
The stampede following the attack resulted in the death of 19 people, among them 17 women. Autopsy conducted on the victims concluded the direct cause of death of all those who died, with the exception of one case of serious skull and brain injury, was suffocation (asphyxia) caused by both the compression of the body and the inhalation of chemical substances.
On April 9, 199, the Supreme Council declared the date April 9 as Georgia's Independence Day. April 9 is now remembered as the Day of National, an annual public holiday.
Locals gathered last nights at April 9 Memorial paying tribute to those, who died that night as a result of the tragedy. Governmental officials, participants of the demonstration and ordinary people commemorated their death. They lit candles and remembered the development of events back in 1989.

Representatives of the parliamentary opposition and unparliamentary act with serious allegations against each other. But can not bring the facts and documents to confirm those charges. A member of the parliamentary opposition Gia Tortladze said that the former finance chairman of the parliament of Russia. The members of «democracy movement - united Georgia» categorically deny this accusation and claim that for such a statement of power Tortladze pay 500 GEL - writes the newspaper «Resonance».
«Their statement is similar to a statement Shulaverskogo committee. I did not say that Nino Burjanadze financed from Russia, across Georgia are calls that are received from Russia a lot of money. If he knew how brought the money, said a straight ... The case of security services. I know one thing, that Burjanadze scheduled for April 9, meeting suspiciously coincides with the plans of Russia, which thinks that the 15 th will be in Tbilisi and wrote about it openly. Burdjanadze rents a lot of offices, holds a huge ramp in the palace of sports, she directs the action on 9 April. How and how much it costs to finance the shares, it is well known. Russia strongly interested her. I know that the Russian handed out leaflets in the Gali district (Abkhazia, ed.) - Vote for Burdjanadze. The generals have also asked it », - states Gia Tortladze.
