CLIMBING A GIANT ROCK IN GUATAPÉ, COLOMBIA (EL PEÑOL TRAVEL VLOG) | Eileen Aldis
In this vlog we climb a monolith called En Peñol located near the town of Guatapé, Colombia. Click below for more info and subscribe here:
Ver más vídeos en español:
El Peñol is a giant rock known as 'la piedra más grande de Colombia' (the biggest stone in Colombia). It weighs 66 million tonnes and contains granite and quartz. The first documented climb was in 1954 when three men took five days to reach the top. Nowadays, it takes 740 steps to reach the very top of the man-made tower at the summit. We found that the weather in this part of Colombia changes every twenty minutes or so - we saw both the sun and rain during our climb. The clouds lifted enough at the top for us to enjoy the gorgeous view of the surrounding lakes and landscape. You'll notice what looks like a 'GI' written on the northern face of the rock. The monolith is situated between two towns, Guatapé and El Peñol, and each has fought over ownership over the years. One day the people of Guatapé decided to settle it once and for all by writing 'Guatapé' in huge letters. By the time they had finished the 'G' and the first vertical line of the 'U' the people of El Peñol had taken notice and assembled to stop it. All that remains is an unfinished name and a part of local history that hasn't washed away.

El Penol Rock, Guatapé, Antioquia, Colombia - Drone
#vidjcb, #PiedraElPeñol, #Antioquia
The landform is a granitic rock remnant that has resisted weathering and erosion, likely as result of being less fractured than the surrounding bedrock. Peñón de Guatapé is an outcrop of the Antioquia Batholith and towers up to 200 meters (656 feet) above its base. A stairway has been carved into the northern face.
Near the base of the Rock, there are food and market stalls for shopping. About halfway up the stairs, there is a shrine to the Virgin Mary. The summit contains a three-story viewpoint tower, a convenience store, and a seating area.
The indigenous Tahamí, former inhabitants of this region, worshiped the rock and called it in their language mojarrá or mujará (meaning “rock” or “stone”).
The rock was first climbed officially in July 1954, when Luis Villegas, Pedro Nel Ramirez, and Ramón Díaz climbed the rock in a five-day endeavor, using sticks that were fixed against the rock's wall.[4]
A new species of plant, named Pitcairnia heterophylla by a German scientist, was found on the top of the rock.
A viewing spot was built on top of the rock, where it is possible to acquire handicrafts, postcards, and other local goods. It is possible to see the 500 km shore-perimeter dam. There are 740 steps to the uppermost step atop the building at the summit, a fact reinforced by yellow numbers also seen in the climb up the stairs.
In the 1940s, the Colombian government declared it a National Monument.
On the western face of the stone there are painted large white letters G and an incomplete U (only the single vertical stroke was completed, resembling an I). The towns of Guatapé and El Peñol had long disputed ownership of the rock, and the residents of Guatapé decided to settle the matter by painting the town's name on the rock in huge white letters. It did not take long for the residents of El Peñol to notice the work, and a large mob was assembled to stop it. Only the “G” and part of the “U” were completed.
The rock rises from the bottom of the hydroelectric dam of Peñol-Guatapé. This monolith was spotted as a border landmark between country farms and the two cities.
At its highest part, on the rear (southeast side), it has an elevation of 2,135 metres (7,005 ft) above sea level. with an average temperature of 18 °C (64 °F). The “Peñol” is 285 metres (935 ft) long and 110 metres (360 ft) wide.
It has some rock breaks, one of which was used for the construction of 650 steps of the stairway
that stairway is the one all tourist can use to go to the top.
The Stone of Peñol is composed of quartz, feldspar and mica.
This monolith is an intriguing and strange sight with millions of years old,
This monolith weighs in at an estimated 10 million tons.
By the time this video was made, the entrance cost about 5 US dollars, the ascent climb is no more than 100 meters, (about 95 feet). It is not physically demanding, but the warm weather will make you sweat a lot. To avoid extreme exhaustion, you should stop, and in each stop, you can take some breath and also nice pictures of the beautiful landscape.
The next coming video is about the surroundings of this beautiful landscape. So please don’t forget to have enabled the ring bell and receive notification as soon as the video is placed online.
I also try to publish a new video every weekend, so I highly recommend you stop by and check by your self what is coming new.
I really hope you enjoyed watching this video. If so, please let me know in the comments below.
If you have questions about the place, once again, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment below. I’ll be more than glad to answer.

Guatape and rock of Peñol
Colombia has many wonderful things to explore. There are beautiful landscapes, eclectic cities and towns, and very friendly people. I am going to take this opportunity to help you learn about The Rock of Guatape
Geography
The peñol is also called El peñol of Guatape, Is a enormous monolithic of 220 meters, it localized between Medellin and Guatape Antioquia, the rock is 656 feet or 200 meters tall
How to get to Guatapé y La Piedra from Medellín:
The rock is located in a town called La Piedra, just 5 minutes away from the town of Guatapé
HOW TO GET TO GUATAPÉ ROCK FROM MEDELLIN?
From Medellín in the Poblado neighborhood take the metro in the Poblado station to Caribe station, or Laureles neighborhood take the metro on La floresta or Estadio station, arrive to San Antonio station and after take the metro a
Niquia to Caribe station with Is connected to the Northern Bus Terminal (Terminal del Norte).
Once at Terminal Norte head to ticket booth number 9 and ask for a ticket to Guatapé ( Donde venden los tiquetes a Guatapé?) this should cost $15.000 COP each way and per person. They run every hour and take 2 hours to get there.
You can take the bus all the way into the town or get dropped off at the turnoff which leads up the rock. I would recommend getting dropped off here and doing the rock first, you literally cannot miss it.
from here you walk 10 minutes to the Rock, the ticket to climb the rock is $18.000
The rock has an elevation of 2,135 meters above sea level, some 740 concrete steps have been built up the rock to reach a 360 degree viewing platform at the top.
HOW TO GET TO GUATAPÉ TOWN?
You can get transportation a mototaxi from the rock Guatapé to Guatapé town is like $5000COP per person one way.
Walk per 45-60 minutes.
Or walk back to where the bus dropped you off and get a local bus for $2500 COP
Guatape Town
Guatape is the little town that you must visit, is a absolutely stunning with zócalos (plinth) that tell the history of Traditions and everyday life of the town. In the plaza there are a lot of restaurants, and street vendors, and one very large and elegant church. You can find juice, beer, coffee, ice cream, and lunch ( Bandeja paisa is a typical food of Antioquia, it is a kind big plate with carne en polvo -ground beef, red bean, yellow banana, salad, chicharrón-pork rind, arepa, rice...and more.)
Here you can buy your return ticket, near to La plaza; ask to the people (dónde venden los tíquetes para Medellin?)
You can spend one day or if you prefer you could easily spend a night in this amazing town.
The Paramo de Oceta: Unique Colombia Trekking
You can find our videos at:
We had no idea what a Paramo was before we visited Colombia. Of course we understand Ecosystems -- like Tropical Rainforests, and Coastal regions and believe it or not, Colombia has 81 different ecosystems, the most in the world.
However, high in the Andean region in Northeast Colombia lies a unique and uncommon ecosystem and the home for some out of this world, unique and Epic hiking opportunities.
Paramos aren't common that's why you may not know what it is.
A Paramo, (in Spanish Páramo) is the most biologically important and most unknown ecosystems in the world.
These high elevation areas are over 3000 meters high and feature sponge-like soil, unique vegetation, wet grasslands, lagoons, and lakes. These areas act as a flood buffer in the rainy season and create a steady source of water during the rainy season.
These ecosystems supply 70% of the water to Colombia and fortunately it's the one ecosystem that has been protected by law from mining, and oil and gas excavation.
Colombia has many Paramos in it's high elevation areas in the country, slowly they are becoming known to hikers and travelers such as the Sierra Nevada de El Cocuy National Park (also known as Parque de Los Nevados), or Chingaza National park near Bogotá, or the Paramo de Belmira in Antioquia a few hours from Medellin.
However, the Paramo rated the most beautiful isn’t one that gets the same kind of fame as El Cocuy and as a result, it is one of the most preserved of all the Paramos.
Considered the most beautiful is the Paramo de Oceta found in the eastern range of the Colombian Andes in Boyacá, Colombia.
The Paramo de Oceta is found at altitudes between 2,950 meters and 3,950 meters. It covers parts of the municipalities Monguí, Mongua, and Tópaga, belonging to the Sugamuxi Province, Boyacá.
Why Hike at the Paramo de Oceta?
First, it is virtually undiscovered, and there are so few hiking up in this area. The location is unspoiled, and the views (check out the video!) are impossible to describe.
The most interesting vegetation is the Frailjones – a perennial shrub – that has a flower that looks like sunflowers and soft hairy leaves. It captures water vapor from the air and passes it into its spongy trunk and into the soil.
During your trek, you will also see condors, eagles, and if you are lucky deer, foxes, owls, and lizards that are native to this area.
How to Get to the Paramo de Oceta
It is located at 230 kilometers (140 mi) from the Colombian capital Bogotá and 93 kilometers (58 mi) from the departmental capital Tunja.
We took a bus after visiting Villa De Leyva, then took a short 1-hour bus to Tunja.
You will need to take a bus from Tunja to Sogomoso(2.5 hours) and then a short 20minut bus trip up the hill to Mongui.
Your hotel can arrange a guide for our hotel for our hiking tour. (8 hours in total) It makes for a long day, but the hike is totally worth it!
Be Prepared for a Long Hike
Expect to leave early on this hike and come back around dinner time. Bring plenty of water, lunch and snacks. The weather changes constantly so pack a rain coat, something to cover your head and wear plenty of layers to change throughout the day.

It is day 4 of my trip to the country of Colombia in South America.I travel via bus from North Medellin to Guatape to see the famous El Penon and hang out in the touristic town but the good times end when the 740 steps to the best view awaits us, not to mention the steps leading up to it, as the Spanish say vale le pena. (worth the hassle).

La Piedra Del Peñol (Spanish for The Rock of Guatapé), also known as El Peñol Stone or simply La Piedra (Spanish for The Stone), is a monolithic formation located at the town and municipality of Guatapé, 1 km inside the city limits (86 km northeast of Medellín or 2 hours by bus) in Antioquia, Colombia.
The wide Antioquian rock base, called batlolito antioqueño, and the Peñón were formed thousands of years ago.

Discovered: The Lost Mountain Gods of Colombia
Peña de Juaica is a remote and legendary mountain situated between the municipalities of Tabio and Tenjo at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,170ft) above sea level. This dominant phallic sentinel which once guarded the rich agricultural territories of the pre-Colombian Muisca people who inhabited this territory. Known locally as La Puerto de Los Dioses - the Gateway of the Gods - this story recounts my recent discovery of the ancient gate-keepers.
Spectacular Parque Nacional Los Nevados, Colombia and the spaceman - Part 1
This video documents my trip up into the mountains of Parque Nacional Los Nevados in Colombia.
I stayed in a very rustic place at an altitude where it was just above freezing. I visited the hot springs (termales / aguas calientes) that are generated by the constantly active nearby volcano (Nevado del Ruiz). To finish off part 1, my two freinds and I checked out one of the nicest waterfalls in the area.
Part 2 will feature my solo trip which will include even more spectacular locations even higher up into the mountains.

Support our Expedition.
NEW! LeAw T-shirts collection online and more!!
In this episode we spent Luca's Birthday, hiking in a surreal place in Salento, Colombia: the Cocora Valley. The Cocora Valley (Valle de Cocora) is home to the country’s national tree and symbol, the towering Quindío wax palm. Enormous, slender trees stretch skyward in this verdant valley. The wax palms, which can grow to up to 200 feet tall, are the tallest type of palm tree in the world, as well as the tallest recorded species of monocot.
The Cocora Valley, which at its lowest is still roughly 5,900 feet above sea level, is the main place to find these quirky-looking trees. The Quindío wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense) thrives in high-altitude places. It’s also an excellent home for endangered birds like the yellow-eared parrot and hummingbirds.
