— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

Guatapé is a town in Antioquia Department, Colombia. it part of the subregion of Eastern Antioquia. Source: Wiki. Gautape is considered a Tourist town filled hotels and hostels and restaurants tailored for the traveling public.
One of Guatape main source of economy stems from tourism, particularly tourism that is interested in the rock or in Spanish La Piedra. Because of Guatape close proximity to La Piedra, tourists are more inclined to visit there instead of neighboring town,.
As a matter of this fact another town El Penol has put a claim on the rock as its own. Because the town originally was close proximity to the Rock La Piedra but then flooded and moved to another location to facilitate Antioquia energy program EPM.
Furthermore each town has a name for the Rock. In Guatape its referred to the Rock of Guatapé or El Peñón de Guatapé or in Penol its called La Piedra de El Peñol. If your in Medellin this is a great tour to go on .

Hiking in Colombia: Jardín Antioquia
Jardin, Antioquia, Colombia is one of the most beautiful pueblos (small colonial towns) located in the department of Antioquia, about 4 hours from Medellin.
This town is famous for its unchanged appearance and virtually preserved colonial appearance. It's mountain views surround the town while it enclosed manicured gardens and lush green vegetation (hence the name Jardin) thanks to its year round spring-like climate. Jardin is a designated Pueblo de Patrimonio – a colonial town designated by Colombia for tourism and investment is provided for preservation and tourism activities.
Just a short walk outside of town is some of the best hiking in Colombia.
We think it's a dream hiking destination because of its virtually untouched pathways with few tourists, a glimpse of local life as you walk through farms and small villages and some spectacular waterfalls and caves.
There are excellent day hikes in Jardin to see:
-El Salto de Angel Jardin
A waterfall in dense jungle with a 50-meter drop and the
Cueva de los Guácharos a spectacular cave, perfectly carved by the flowing river waters
Previously we did the hike to La Cueva Del Esplendor – another fantastic hike into caves, however, it is on private land, and due to erosion it is still closed for tourists.
This is just a small glimpse of the many options for hikes outside of Jardin, each with its own set of jaw-dropping views of the town on the way down.
Birdwatching and Jardin Coffee tours are other top things to do in this laid-back town or for some adventure there is paragliding, and Caving and rappelling
How to organize Hikes in El Jardin Antioquia:
You need to hire a guide to do these hikes. We recommend Jardin Eco Tours – you can visit them on line, or head to their office a couple of blocks away from the main square off of Calle 10 #6-05
How to get to Jardin:
How to get to Jardin from Medellin:
From Terminal Sur – Catch a Jardin bus it takes 3-4 hours depending on traffic and costs about 40,000 pesos. Rapid Ochoa Jardin bus company is a great option.
How to get to Jardin from the South (From Manizales and the coffee zone)
This way is a little more challenging. Wherever you are in the coffee zone, you need to take a transfer to Rio Sucio. You need to take a collectivo (small van) to Rio Sucio, then transfer to Jardin. This journey is roughly 2 hours, and it costs about 20,000 pesos

Salento Quindío Colombia
It is perhaps the most important municipality for tourism in Quindío, this due to three fundamental reasons. The first, the beautiful and preserved architecture bequeathed from the Antioquia colonization; the second, the imposing Valle de Cocora or Cocora Valley, which at the landscape level is one of the most beautiful in Colombia; and the third, because of a contagious environment of peace and well-being that is immediately impregnated, is up.
To get there, take the road that connects Armenia with Pereira, making the detour to the right at km 17. Salento appears at the end of a curved road that distils through the valley of the Quindío River and passes in front of the typical inns of the corregimiento de Boquía. The so-called father of the municipalities of Quindío, was the first to be founded by the Antioqueno settlers in the mid-nineteenth century.
Located 26 km from Armenia, on the western side of the Central Cordillera and northeast of the department, Salento in Quindio Colombia, is like a historical recount of the region, as its streets reflect intact the tradition of the initial settlers. Tradition that even today many strive to preserve so that the place projects its full charm. This town Salento, has colorful houses and balconies adorned with flowers has among the residents some foreigners who some day bequeathed and decided to stay trapped by the charm of the place.
Distance from Medellín to salento quindio is 248 kms
That is why it is common to meet in any corner with Argentines, Italians, French, Americans or Spaniards; even, some of them just entered the wonderful streets of Salento, still wandering with their baggage in search of the cultural atmosphere and the wonders of the landscape.

Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia - City of Eternal Spring
Medellín is the second-largest city in Colombia and the capital of the department of Antioquia. It is located in the Aburrá Valley, a central region of the Andes Mountains in South America.
It is nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring” for its temperate weather, it hosts a famous annual Flower Festival. Modern metrocables link the city to surrounding barrios and offer sweeping views of the Aburrá Valley below. Sculptures by Fernando Botero decorate downtown's Botero Plaza, while the Museo de Antioquia displays more of the Colombian artist’s work.
After Colombia won its independence from Spain, Medellín became the capital of the Federal State of Antioquia until 1888, with the proclamation of the Colombian Constitution of 1886. During the 19th century, Medellín was a dynamic commercial center, first exporting gold, then producing and exporting coffee.
At the beginning of the 21st century the city regained industrial dynamism, with the construction of the Medellín Metro commuter rail, liberalized development policies, improved security and improved education. Researchers at the Overseas Development Institute have lauded the city as a pioneer of a post-Washington consensus local development state model of economic development. The city is promoted internationally as a tourist destination and is considered by the GaWC as sufficient to be a global city.
The Medellín Metropolitan Area produces 67% of the Department of Antioquia's GDP and 11% of the economy of Colombia. Medellín is important to the region for its universities, academies, commerce, industry, science, health services, flower-growing, festivals and nightlife.
In February 2013, the Urban Land Institute chose Medellín as the most innovative city in the world due to its recent advances in politics, education and social development. In the same year, Medellín was announced as the preferred corporate business destination in South America, and won the Verónica Rudge Urbanism Award.
The most recent survey on the global status of the Smart Cities by Indra Sistemas catalogs Medellín as one of the best cities to live in South America, sharing the first place with Santiago de Chile, and alongside Barcelona and Lisbon in Europe. Medellín won the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2016. The award seeks to recognize and celebrate efforts in furthering innovation in urban solutions and sustainable urban development.
