— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

The Sierra Nevada de santa marta colombia is an isolated mountain range separated from the Andes chain that runs through Colombia. Reaching an altitude of 5,700 m (18,700 ft) just 42 km (26 mi) from the Caribbean coast, the Sierra Nevada is one of the world's highest coastal ranges, being 250m shorter than the Saint Elias Mountains in Canada. The Sierra Nevada encompasses about 17,000 km2 (6,600 sq mi) and serves as the source of 36 rivers. The range is in the Departments of Magdalena, Cesar and La Guajira.
Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is Colombia's second oldest national park, established in 1964. It is located in the Cordillera Oriental range, between the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena and Cesar, in the mountain range of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. It is a sanctuary as well as a tourist attraction, because it offers different climate, terrain, flora and fauna environments, ranging from beaches to snowy mountain peaks. Welcome to Colombia
We started our trip along the Colombian Caribbean coast in the department of Atlántico. The department is located in the Caribbean region, it limits to the north by the Caribbean Sea, to the east with the Magdalena River and to the west with the department of Bolívar. We visited its capital, Barranquilla, to learn about the most important folkloric and cultural events as the Carnaval de Barranquilla, declared Masterpiece of the oral and intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. We also visited the tropical dry forest Luriza, 6km from Usiacurí, In this reserve, 139 species of birds have been identified. 10 specimens of amphibians, 44 of reptiles, 122 of plants and 43 of mammals, among which the red howler monkey stands out. Finally, we finished the first part of our tour along the Colombian Caribbean coast at the club Lagos de Caujaral, an excellent private club where we had the chance to play some Caribbean golf and enjoy some Colombia birding.

The city of Cartagena, known in the colonial is a major port founded in 1533, located on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region. It was strategically located between the Magdalena and Sinú rivers and became the main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire, establishing its importance by the early 1540s. During the colonial era it was a key port for the export of Peruvian silver to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system. It was defensible against pirate attacks in the Caribbean.[3] It is the capital of the Bolívar Department, and had a population 971,592 as of 2016.[2] It is the fifth-largest city in Colombia and the second largest in the region, after Barranquilla. The urban area of Cartagena is also the fifth-largest urban area in the country. Economic activities include the maritime and petrochemicals industries, as well as tourism.

Tayrona National Natural Park Travel Video
Tayrona National Natural Park Travel Video - In the department of Magdalena, just 34 km from the lovely city of Santa Marta, lies the Tayrona National Park -- a sanctuary of nature and archaeological remains that invite an encounter with oneself. Mangrove swamps, corals, algae prairies, thorny scrubland, and magical dry, humid, and cloud forests proliferate and are home to a surprising variety of vegetal and animal species that bear witness to life.
These 12,000 land and 3,000 marine hectares were proclaimed in 1969 for their great biological and archaeological value. Prior to the Spanish Conquest, this was the land of the Tayrona indigenous people, who left significant evidence of their way of life in Pueblito Chairama and other sites. Temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C, and altitudes, from zero to nine meters above sea level. There are two rainy periods: from May to June and from September to November.
