— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

We explored the department Valle del Cauca on the pacific coast and checked it out on its potential for bird watching. El Valle del Cauca is another of the 32 Colombian departments, located in the southwest part of the country between the Andes and the Pacific Coast. The area is surrounded by Choco y Risaralda in the North, Qundio y Toima to the east and Choco y the Pacific Ocean to the west. Because of its location near the Pacific Coast, the area houses between 25 and 50% of the country’s fauna and 11% of the country’s flora.
The Valle del Cauca is the second most biodiverse department in Colombia. With over 725 species of marine birds and 100 migratory species, this is an ideal place for Colombia birdwatching. Get your cameras ready for some great Colombia birding photography as well and be sure to check out the rich diversity of amphibians, as the region houses over 130 different species.
The reign’s natural richness is certainly impressive, but it is also an important area of environmental conservation and protection. From the impenetrable jungles and the fast-flowing rivers to the infinite beaches and the most extensive mangroves in South America, the region is certainly one of the best things to do in Colombia for our nature lovers!

Off the beaten track travel SIERRA NEVADA DE SANTA MARTA 2018
Off the beating track Travel SIERRA NEVADA DE SANTA MARTA
Colombia is one of the megadiverse countries in the world in biodiversity, ranking first in bird species. As for plants, the country has between 40,000 and 45,000 plant species, equivalent to 10 or 20% of total global species, which is even more remarkable given that Colombia is considered a country of intermediate size. Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, lagging only after Brazil which is approximately 7 times bigger.
Colombia is the country in the planet more characterized by a high biodiversity, with the highest rate of species by area unit worldwide and it has the largest number of endemisms (species that are not found naturally anywhere else) of any country. About 10% of the species of the Earth live in Colombia, including over 1,900 species of bird, more than in Europe and North America combined, Colombia has 10% of the world's mammals species, 14% of the amphibian species and 18% of the bird species of the world.
Colombia has about 2,000 species of marine fish and is the second most diverse country in freshwater fish. Colombia is the country with more endemic species of butterflies, number 1 in terms of orchid species and approximately 7,000 species of beetles. Colombia is second in the number of amphibian species and is the third most diverse country in reptiles and palms. There are about 1,900 species of mollusks and according to estimates there are about 300,000 species of invertebrates in the country. In Colombia there are 32 terrestrial biomes and 314 types of ecosystems.
The Sierra Nevada de santa marta colombia is an isolated mountain range separated from the Andes chain that runs through Colombia. Reaching an altitude of 5,700 m (18,700 ft) just 42 km (26 mi) from the Caribbean coast, the Sierra Nevada is one of the world's highest coastal ranges, being 250m shorter than the Saint Elias Mountains in Canada. The Sierra Nevada encompasses about 17,000 km2 (6,600 sq mi) and serves as the source of 36 rivers. The range is in the Departments of Magdalena, Cesar and La Guajira.
Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is Colombia's second oldest national park, established in 1964. It is located in the Cordillera Oriental range, between the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena and Cesar, in the mountain range of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. It is a sanctuary as well as a tourist attraction, because it offers different climate, terrain, flora and fauna environments, ranging from beaches to snowy mountain peaks. Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park is considered a unique place in the world due to its isolation from the Andes and its highest peak (5700 meters above sea level) is located just 42 km away from the sea.

Hiking in Colombia: Jardín Antioquia
Jardin, Antioquia, Colombia is one of the most beautiful pueblos (small colonial towns) located in the department of Antioquia, about 4 hours from Medellin.
This town is famous for its unchanged appearance and virtually preserved colonial appearance. It's mountain views surround the town while it enclosed manicured gardens and lush green vegetation (hence the name Jardin) thanks to its year round spring-like climate. Jardin is a designated Pueblo de Patrimonio – a colonial town designated by Colombia for tourism and investment is provided for preservation and tourism activities.
Just a short walk outside of town is some of the best hiking in Colombia.
We think it's a dream hiking destination because of its virtually untouched pathways with few tourists, a glimpse of local life as you walk through farms and small villages and some spectacular waterfalls and caves.
There are excellent day hikes in Jardin to see:
-El Salto de Angel Jardin
A waterfall in dense jungle with a 50-meter drop and the
Cueva de los Guácharos a spectacular cave, perfectly carved by the flowing river waters
Previously we did the hike to La Cueva Del Esplendor – another fantastic hike into caves, however, it is on private land, and due to erosion it is still closed for tourists.
This is just a small glimpse of the many options for hikes outside of Jardin, each with its own set of jaw-dropping views of the town on the way down.
Birdwatching and Jardin Coffee tours are other top things to do in this laid-back town or for some adventure there is paragliding, and Caving and rappelling
How to organize Hikes in El Jardin Antioquia:
You need to hire a guide to do these hikes. We recommend Jardin Eco Tours – you can visit them on line, or head to their office a couple of blocks away from the main square off of Calle 10 #6-05
How to get to Jardin:
How to get to Jardin from Medellin:
From Terminal Sur – Catch a Jardin bus it takes 3-4 hours depending on traffic and costs about 40,000 pesos. Rapid Ochoa Jardin bus company is a great option.
How to get to Jardin from the South (From Manizales and the coffee zone)
This way is a little more challenging. Wherever you are in the coffee zone, you need to take a transfer to Rio Sucio. You need to take a collectivo (small van) to Rio Sucio, then transfer to Jardin. This journey is roughly 2 hours, and it costs about 20,000 pesos
