Die Aare entspringt dem Grimselgebiet im Zentralschweizer Alpenmassiv und durchläuft auf einer Strecke von knapp 300 km in einem weiten Bogen das Schweizer Mittelland. Die Aare ist zugleich der grösste Rheinzufluss. In der Nähe des Eisenbahnknotenpunktes der Schweiz Olten (396 m ü. M.) im Kanton Solothurn liegt nur wenig flussaufwärts das mittelalterliche Städtchen Aarburg (395 m ü. M.) auf Aargauer Kantonsgebiet. Die darüber thronende Festungsanlage ist seit der frühen Neuzeit erhalten geblieben und ist die einzige ihrer Art in der Schweiz.

Die über 400 m lange Festung im Anschluss an die weisse Stadtkirche beherbergt heute unter anderem das kantonale Jugendheim, welches mittels pädagogischer und therapeutischer Massnahmen jugendstrafrechtliche Schutzvorkehrungen durchführt.


The Aar springs in the Grimsel region in the Central Swiss Alps and traverses Central Switzerland in a vast, roughly 300-km-long arch. The Aar is at the same time the largest feeding river of the Rhine. Near the Swiss railway junction of Olten (396 m above sea level) in the canton of Solothurn slightly upriver lies the medieval town of Aarburg (395 m above sea level) in the canton of Aargau. The fortress sitting enthroned above it could be preserved since the Early Modern Age and is the only one of its kind in Switzerland.

Following the white town church, the over 400-m-long fortress houses among others the cantonal juvenile shelter, which treats juvenile offenders with pedagogic and therapeutic measures.
