Ababa bar
Tip
Στο παταράκι του μαγαζιού φιλοξενούνται εκθέσεις ζωγραφικής και φωτογραφίας.

St. Louis Drive In - Incredibly Good Plate Lunches in Honolulu!
A plate lunch is the quintessential meal to eat in Hawaii. Get all the details here:
Okay let's just go ahead and say it straight up, St. Louis Drive In, doesn't exactly have the most Hawaiian sounding name - but they get their name from being at the base of a mountain known as St. Louis Heights. Anyway, now that we got that out of the way, we can move on to the delicious food, plate lunches to be more specific, that they serve.
What is a plate lunch? You'll hear the name plate lunch frequently when you are in Hawaii, and basically what it is, is a meal on a plate or packed into a foam box that includes a couple of scoops of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad, and whatever main dish you choose. Popular things to eat in a plate lunch include teriyaki chicken, teriyaki steak, fried mahi mahi fish, mochiko chicken, chicken katsu, and those are just a few. You will find restaurants serving plate lunches all over Hawaii and throughout Honolulu. The most famous plate lunch restaurant in Honolulu is known as Rainbow Drive In, but there's also L&L, which is a chain throughout Hawaii, and there are so many others.
As a tip from some of my relatives, on my most recent trip back to Honolulu, I went to eat at St. Louis Drive In, located in the Kaimuki area of Honolulu. As soon as you arrive to the small neighborhood restaurant, you can tell there's something special about it - it just has that classic old-skool feel to it. There's no indoor seating, so you look at the big menu, which is posted outside of the kitchen, and make your order. They have quite a few things on the menu, including all the normal plate lunches, and additionally they have some of their own unique specialties like beef stew, stroganoff, and some other Japanese and Western dishes cooked Hawaiian style.
If you go to St. Louis Drive In during a mealtime, you'll be in line with a lot of other people waiting for the delicious food. There are two things on the menu that I would really recommend, and I haven't tried everything on the menu yet, so these are just two things that I really enjoyed and I think you will too. Number one is the mixed seafood platter, a plate that comes with two scoops of rice, a side of fresh sashimi, some deep-fried mahi mahi fish, and finally to top things off, two deep-fried shrimp tempuras. The pile of seafood comes stacked on top of each other in a beautiful pyramid formation. The next thing I really loved at St. Louis Drive In is the grilled ahi tuna belly plate. They really have some high-quality tuna, and despite it being a real hole in the wall restaurant, they cook their fish perfectly. The tuna belly was absolutely succulent, full of those beautiful fish oils, and juicy beyond belief. Unlike other plate lunch restaurants in Hawaii, they don't include macaroni salad as one of the main dishes, but I think you can order it on the side if you really want it.
So even though this restaurant is kind of a fast food style Hawaii restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, and I'm speaking especially for the fish since that's what I ate. Everything was cooked perfectly and it was truly a wonderful meal. If you're looking for a delicious plate lunch in Honolulu be sure to take a trip over to St. Louis Drive In.

Barbecue House - Best Restaurants in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
In Tanzania, the grill does not refer to the barbecue; If you want grilled meat, you go to a barbecue (BBQ) restaurant, and Barbecue House is one of the best restaurants in Dar Es Salaam. Get the details here -
Nearly every time I fly into Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, one of the first dinners we eat is at Barbecue House, they serve consistently delicious food. The long standing restaurants located in the Upanga area of town has stood the test of time, offering up local Tanzanian barbecue favorites for years and years now. In the daytime, the restaurant appears to be nothing more than a residential home. But beginning at about 5 pm of so, the barbecue grills are rolled out to the front, the gates open, and some tables are placed outside along the sidewalk. Located just a few blocks for the sea, Barbecue House gets a nice nightly breeze that cools one off when you're eating marvelous food.
Ok, so now on to the food at Barbecue House restaurant in Dar Es Salaam. One of the most popular items on the menu is their barbecue chicken. It's similar to an Indian tandoori chicken, marinated in an assortment of red spices and colorings, but instead of being cooked in a clay tandoor oven, the chicken is instead cooked over hot charcoal. But first things first, one of the best reasons to go to this restaurant is to first eat the cabbage salad which they served. Now the cabbage is nothing out of ordinary, it's just thinly sliced cabbage. But the best part about it is the incredible array of sauces that they serve at Barbecue House. There's a green chili sauce, a red chili sauce, a sweet and sour tamarind sauce, and my all time favorite, the fresh coconut chutney. Also for starters, I normally get a plate of hot samosas, served with either vegetables or meat or chicken inside. Their samosas are excellent, but again, it's all about that coconut chutney on top that really makes it unbelievably spectacular.
For main course, we ordered barbecue chicken, the spicy version. It was pleasantly spicy, cooked to perfection and nice and juicy. I also decided to order a piece of fish, a nice chunk that I believe was red snapper. The fish was marinated in the same red goodness and then placed over the barbecue. To complete the meal, there are both chips (French fries) or a bread known as ajam to order. It's kind of like a naan, but it's a little more on the spongy side - kind of like a pancake. It's first fried in a pan and then placed on the barbecue to gain that extra smoky flavor.
Barbecue House is one of my best restaurants in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and it's must visit when you go to Tanzania. Enjoy!

Uzbekistan Day 6: Food and Attractions Tour of Khiva + Unforgettable Family Meal!
Khiva is another ancient city of Uzbekistan, known for its mud walled city. It’s another great city to explore for a combination of the history and food. And the food was different in Khiva than in any other city I had been to so far in Uzbekistan.
Islam Khoja Minaret - We started the day in Khiva old town, visiting some of the famous sights, and climbing to the top of a minaret. My legs are still sore!
Hotel Malika Kheivak - At a small and peaceful restaurant, we lounged on the traditional Uzbek tables and ate gumma, something similar to fried dumpling pockets.
Djuma Mosque - Known for its hypostyle hall, this is a landmark mosque and museum to visit when you’re in Khiva.
Tea House Mirza Boshi - For mid-morning snack, we headed over to a teahouse in the center of the old city to try a dish called shivit oshi, an Uzbekistan Khiva speciality of green dill noodles topped with meat stew. It was delicious.
Shivit oshi - 20,000 UZS ($2.42) per plate
Fish Restaurant - For next lunch we headed out of the city a little ways to a river and pond to eat fish. The fish was fresh and we had both a fried fish and a grilled fish, both of which were delicious.
Total price - 135,000 UZS ($16.33)
Family home cooked meal - We woke up the next day and were invited over to a local family home to cook and eat. They took hospitality to the next level, welcoming us into their home, preparing special tuhum barak (egg stuffed dumplings), and a surprise plov at the end of our meal. It was one of the most memorable and special meals of my entire trip to Uzbekistan. Thank you to this amazing family.
And that wraps up this entire Uzbekistan Food and Travel series. It was an incredible trip, full of delicious and massive portions of food, hospitable people, and immense history. Again, thank you to Bekruz and the Ministry of Tourism Uzbekistan for making this trip happen.
