Abernethy Forest is a remnant of the Caledonian Forest in Strathspey, in the Highland council area of Scotland. It lies within the Cairngorms National Park, close to the villages of Nethy Bridge, Boat of Garten, and Aviemore. The forest is an RSPB reserve, close to Loch Garten Osprey Centre, which is also owned by the RSPB. It is popular with walkers, as there are various trails throughout the reserve. The forest forms part of the wider Abernethy National Nature Reserve.There is approximately 4,000 hectares of forest within the reserve, and just under half of this is native caledonian pine forest. Abernethy Forest is one of the largest remaining remnant of caledonian pine forest in Scotland. The forest is home to a variety of birds and mammals, including Scottish crossbill, red squirrel, wildcat, red deer, black grouse, crested tit and osprey. There is also a capercaillie lek.

Abernethy is ancient, wild and immeasurably special. Reaching from the River Nethy to the top of Ben Macdui (Britain’s second highest mountain), it boasts ancient Caledonian pineforest, sweeping moorland, vital wetland and dramatic mountains.

In this video I take a combined route of various RSPB Trails and some unwaymarked ones for a longer route around Loch Mallachie, Loch Garten and the Osprey Centre.

There is plenty more to see at this NNR from other areas away from the RSPB sites - I will be returning in the future.

Abernethy Forest Part 1

The Abernethy Forest is a place with its own music, a place to find solitude but also to learn about our interconnected world. This film is set in one of Britain's ancient forests. The trees and the forest have much to teach us about being, and about relationships. The entire film was made on location with minimal editing, using a handheld camcorder. There is a very brief scene with some red deer, -they didn't stay around for long! The commentary was made while walking around in the Abernethy, so is not over-dubbed, and the sounds of the forest recorded via the camcorder microphone. The film was shot in the Abernethy Forest,..in the Cairngorms, Scotland -Britain's last great wilderness. To be contd.

What does the idea of a ‘Cairngorms National Park’ mean to you? What is it like to live in it? What impact has it had on local lives since its establishment in 2003?
In these six films we contrast six private lives lived out in a National Park. From park ranger to farmer, shop owner to school student and a young mum to a service station proprietor. We learn of the conflicts between preserving the wild beauty of the park – which is home to 25% of the UK’s threatened bird, animal and plant species – and providing new homes for its growing population. We capture the essence of the interviewee in order to provide context to the geographical debates the students will encounter in the module.
Ross grew up on a farm near Aviemore and started his career as an apprentice warden on Cairngorm Mountain. He is now a Ranger at Abernethy RSPB Reserve, married with two young children and still one of the youngest Rangers in the area. Without doubt, for him the Cairngorms is the best place in the world to live – it gave him, and his children now, so many opportunities while growing up.
