Ethiopia’s Chapel in the Sky
If churches were assessed by their risk factor, Abuna Yemata Guh would be our new Sistine Chapel. Perched 650 feet above a steep cliff in Northern Ethiopia, visitors face a 45-minute climb up the cliff’s vertical face in order to access the precariously positioned church. Dating back to the 5th century, history has it that its founder Father Yemata built the chapel to be closer to heavenly spirits; however, others claim it was a strategic move to avoid his enemies.

Is this the most extreme baptism? BBC Stories
This is the most extreme baptism you’ll ever see. In Ethiopia, belief in a higher power leads villagers in the Tigray region to climb a huge, vertiginous mountainside to reach their church. They believe it's vital and beneficial for their children to be baptised here, despite the obvious dangers. Just 40 days after giving birth, Ngisti must climb 400 metres to have her new son Dawit baptised.

ETHIOPIA’S CHURCH IN THE SKY ! ABUNA YEMATA GUH, ANCIENT MOUNTAIN CHURCHSES OF ETHIOPIA
These ancient churches were often built in the most impossible of places. A good example is the Abuna Yemata Guh in Tigray, in Northern Ethiopia. This 5th century church is perched 650 feet up in the sky, on the face of a vertical spire of rock. To reach it, one has to climb without any climbing ropes or harnesses, inching along narrow ledges and crossing a rickety makeshift bridge. The final leg of the journey involves scaling a sheer 19 feet-high wall of rock. The church was founded by Abuna Yemata, one of the nine saints, who chose the secluded spot as his hermitage.
Abuna Yemata
In the Tigray Region of Ethiopia, the western portion of the woreda covers a region known as Gheralta, known for its 35-odd rock-hewn churches, like Hawzen Tekle Haymanot, Abuna Yemata Guh and Debre Maryam Qorqor. Abuna Yemata Guh is notable for its paintings representing nine of the Apostles, and the other eight of the Nine Saints, one of whom, Abuna Yem'ata, tradition credits founding the Church.

Visit the Abune Yemata Rock Hewn Church in Ethiopia
Whether you travel to Ethiopia for an R&R or to visit a country steeped in history and striking landscapes, you must include Abuna Yemata Guh in your bucket list.
Ethiopia is a country that showcases a unique blend of history and faith, with its fascinating religious sites. Rock-carved churches carved from single blocks of granite, are unique to this country. Although most of them were built in the 4th–13th century period, they are much more than sites of worship.
Abuna Yemata Guh – the Church that tests your grit
While many of the Tigray churches are dug into the ground or monolithic with roofs at ground level, the church at Abuna Yemata Guh is pure-play rock-hewn. Almost a part of the mountains of the Hawzen Woreda it blends with the vertical rock spire in the rugged mountainside.
With so many ancient rock churches to choose from, the one at Abuna Yemata Guh tests your spiritual rigour as much as physical prowess. The trek up to the church is dangerous and adrenaline-high, testing both your patience and resilience. The church itself is perched dangerously on the cliff-side, with a 200-250 m drop on the sides, making you wonder how families grit it out to visit the church for Sunday services. To reach it, you must scale a sheer wall of rock and inch along a precipitous ledge, all in bare feet because you are on holy ground. Is it any wonder that Abuna Yemata Guh is said to be the world’s least accessible places of worship?

Abuna Yemata Guh Etiopia Discovery
In the V century, 9 saints from Syria, Constantinople and other countries had begun to spread the faith far beyond the caravan routes and deep into the mountain countryside. These missionaries played a key role in the early growth of Christianity in Ethiopia. The monks translated the Bible and other religious texts from the Greek into Ethiopian allowing the local population who did not know how to read the Greek, to know Christianity. The mystical aspects of religion found a curious draw among the young. With the growth of Christianity, a series of spectacular churches and monasteries were built on top of the mountains or carved out of solid rock, many of which are still in use today.
These ancient churches were often built in the most impossible places. A superb example is the Abuna Yemata Guh of Tigray, in northern Ethiopia. This church of the V century is perched at 650 feet high in the sky, on the face of a vertical spire of rock. To reach it, you have to climb barefoot, moving slowly along narrow ledges and crossing an improvised wobbly bridge. The last part of the journey involves the scaling of a 12mt-high rock wall.
But what is hidden behind the small wooden door it is sure worth the risk!

Abuna Yemata Guh by Pia Jessen
We climbed a cliff to visit this fantastic ancient church!
The 4th century, Abuna Yemata Guh rock hewn church was high on my list of ancient churches to visit in the Tigray region.
We were a group of six, three of us chose to climb and the remaining three visited a traditional village at the foot of our mountain.
The initial climb took about 45mins and was quite reasonable, although there was a couple of steep sections along the way.
The last bit of the climb up to the church was a bit scary,
but very rewarding. Naturally, we accepted Tinaye's offer (our local guide) of wearing a harness.
Local helpers showed us where to put our hands & feet and gave us firm, secure hands for extra security. They were a marvellous help!
No matter how far one climbs up the mountain, it's well worth it - the views are amazing!
The church was carved by hand and once inside we met the priest and marvelled at the absolutely beautiful frescoes painted on the walls and ceiling - just amazing!
The entire morning was indeed, a wonderful experience!
I'm just gonna say, this is NOT a dangerous church to visit .. yes, the climb is challenging for 'non rock climbers'..heh heh,
but it's not a death defying feat as I've seen some claim in
various places on the internet (absolute sensationalism!)
If you're reasonably fit and have the confidence to climb there's no reason why you wouldn't.
Abuna Yemata is the local church for the area and Ethiopians climb to this church on Sundays and for religious ceremonies. We saw them almost ''walk'' up the cliff face, just like it was nothing ..
Do it if you get the opportunity!

Rock-Hewn Churches of Tigray, Ethiopia. DRONE
Abuna Yemata Rock-Hewn Church. In the altitude of 2600 m. The monolite is chipped and drawn in the fifth century. It has survived until these days, as Muslims have failed to reach and burn them.
I reached them with the help of locals and rope tied to the mountain bush, hardly withstanding 100 kg. And I went barefoot, because the area was holy. It is very interesting to get to them, to climb, and to stay inside. During religious holidays, the locals goes there in hundreds. Imagine what is happening there, when there is no safe place to stand even now.
Ethiopia
