1. Abuna Yemata Guh church Hawzen
Abuna Yemata Guh is a monolithic church located in the Hawzen woreda of the Tigray Region, Ethiopia. It is situated at a height of 2,580 metres and has to be climbed on foot to reach. It is notable for its dome and wall paintings dating back to the 5th century and its architecture.

Wukro (also transliterated Wuqro; formerly known as Dongolo is a town and separate woreda in northern Ethiopia. It's located in the Misraqawi zone of the Tigray region on the Asmara-Addis Ababa highway . Wukro is surrounded by Kilte Awulaelo woreda. The rock-hewn churches around Wukro are the town's most distinctive landmarks; in the early 20th century the town's name was changed from Dongolo to the Tigrigna word for a structure carved from the living rock, Wukro.

The ancient rock-hewn churches of Tigray were built between 4th and 15th century, there are more than 100 of them. They offer amazing atmospheric ambience and views over spectacular landscapes. In this video visit to 6 of the most appealing churches in Tigray - interesting either historically, architecturally or because they offer the most spectacular views over the surrounding landscapes. We hiked to 3 of the Gheralta cluster churches: Maryam and Daniel Korkor, Abuna Yemata Guh; visited Mikael Imba (Atsbi cluster), Medhane Alem Adi Kasho and Petros and Paulos (Teka Tesfai cluster), and Abreha We Atsbeha (Wukro cluster).

1,664 Year Old Church in Ethiopia

Hey friends, three weeks ago we went to Ethiopia to shoot a video about Abuna Yemata. On the last day we were there we did a little tourism ourselves and went to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Two churches that our guide told us were from the 4th and 6th centuries.

If you ever took art history you may have seen some images of the frescos in these churches.

These churches are built into cliffs, thousands of meters high, and can be quite dangerous to get to. We hope you enjoy our mini docmunentary about these rock-hewn churches in Tigray, Ethiopia.

Maychew, also Maichew (Ge'ez: ማይጨው), is a town and woreda in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. It is located at 665 km north of Addis Ababa along Ethiopian Highway 1 which runs to Mekelle (the capital city of Tigray region) with an altitude of 2479 m. According to Ethiopia’s agro-ecological setting, Maychew and its environs are classified under the Weinadega (semi-temperate zone).Wikipedia

Limalimo Lodge, Ethiopia

I took my kids to Ethiopia in dec 2017.

This is an eco lodge we had high on our bucket list. I just love the simplicity of the little lodge with the stunning views over the gorgeous Simien Mountains. It’s one of Africa’s highest located lodges as the mountains are between 3000-3300 meters high. I like the architecture of this lodge, as they use old methods of building but in a modern touch. The interior reminds me of the Scandinavian style.

The views are breathtaking and the surroundings lush and green. Simien mountains is a must go to all animal lovers.
It’s an excellent place to stay as it’s close to see the gelada monkeys. This unique type of monkey are plentiful and not scared at all. They only eat grass so it was safe for us to sit among them.
The bird life is amazing with white backed vultures and lammergeiers frequently seen. I highly recommend a bush walk with one of the knowledgeable guides in the area. Wild roses, thyme and other flowers combined with the views made Simien mountains a memory for life!
