First Impressions of KATHMANDU, NEPAL [Ep. 2]

The very first video about Kathmandu that I created where I ventured out trying the minibus with other local. From Manamaiju to the touristy center of Thamel, I get to experience everything in one day. I explored several temples, shops and many other things. As I was trying to go back to my accommodation, I realized that there is no organized transportation system in Kathmandu. I didn't know how to get back to my accommodation and was helped by the locals.

The Nepalese Honey That Makes People Hallucinate
Nepal’s Gurung people live mostly in small villages in the vast Annapurna mountain ranges. In this remote region, they practice an ancient tradition of honey hunting where they descend towering cliffs on handmade ladders, to harvest honey nestled under jagged overhangs.
In spring, the Gurung’s honey contains a rare substance called grayanotoxin from rhododendron flowers that’s known for its intoxicating effects. While some accounts say it’s a deadly poison, others refer to it as an aphrodisiac, powerful medicine, and a hallucinogenic drug.
VICE travelled deep into the Annapurna mountains to join a Gurung village on their spring hunt and understand Mad Honey's effects.

Ethnic-conflict is likely to rise in Nepal, says Mahendra Lawati on Indigenous Talk: Episode - 88
Indigenous Television Nepal
There is likely to rise ethnic-conflict in Nepal says Prof. Dr. Mahendra Lawoti while talking to Jagat Dong in Indigenous Talk, a talk shows of Indigenous Television. According to him, government has not yet addressed the rights of minorities groups of Nepal. Majority of populations in Nepal are still discriminated economically, politically and historically. There is disparities in terms of access to education, services, participation in the civil services and so forth. Take an example why Chief Secretary, Joint-Secretary are only from Bahun and Chhetri community alone? it is just because minority groups are systematically excluded in the civil service exams.

Having initially traveled for 5 months throughout Asia, I moved to China in January 2017 for an English teaching job, which was my first experience living abroad.

Swayambhunath temple on a hill top in Kathmandu, Nepal
Swayambhunath is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in the north-west parts of the temple. The Tibetan name for the site means 'Sublime Trees' (Wylie:Phags.pa Shing.kun), for the many varieties of trees found on the hill. However, Shing.kun may be a corruption of the local Nepal Bhasa name for the complex, Singgu, meaning 'self-sprung'. For the Buddhist Newars in whose mythological history and origin myth as well as day-to-day religious practice, Swayambhunath occupies a central position, it is probably the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. For Tibetans and followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it is second only to Boudhanath.
The Swayambhunath complex consists of a stupa, a variety of shrines and temples, some dating back to the Licchavi period. A Tibetan monastery, museum and library are more recent additions. The stupa has Buddha's eyes and eyebrows painted on. Between them, the number one (in Devanagari script) is painted in the fashion of a nose. There are also shops, restaurants and hostels. The site has two access points: a long stairway with 365 steps, leading directly to the main platform of the temple, which is from the top of the hill to the east; and a car road around the hill from the south leading to the southwest entrance. The first sight on reaching the top of the stairway is the Vajra. Tsultrim Allione describes the experience:
We were breathless and sweating as we stumbled up the last steep steps and practically fell upon the biggest vajra (thunder-bolt scepter) that I have ever seen. Behind this vajra was the vast, round, white dome of the stupa, like a full solid skirt, at the top of which were two giant Buddha eyes wisely looking out over the peaceful valley which was just beginning to come alive.

Nepali folk musical instrument Museum in Tripureswor in Kathmandu, Nepal
Nepali folk musical instrument Museum in Tripureswor in Kathmandu in Nepal. One can see Murchunga, Tunga, Madal, a double-headed drum, Nepalese Dhyangro shaman's carved wood and goatskin drum etc.
n 1995 Ram Prasad Kadel began a collection of traditional Nepali folk musical instruments in an effort to curtail the impending loss of his countries precious musical heritage. Profits from Ram’s own business financed research trips & purchases of endangered folk instruments. He subsequently founded The Nepali Folk Musical Instrument Museum (NFMIM) and registered it as a charity with the Nepal Government in 1997.
By 2002 this collection had become the largest and most comprehensive in Nepal and a decision was taken to open the museum to public access in temporary premises at Bhadrakali Temple in central Kathmandu. Finally in 2007 the museum, then holding more than 260 types of instruments, was re-housed in larger and more suitable, fully renovated, premises at Tripureswor Mahadev Temple and renamed Music Museum of Nepal.
The Museum now holds a collection of 650 distinct Nepali folk musical Instruments. Over the years we have broadened our scope to encompass the rediscovery, conservation and promotion of the entire spectrum of Nepal’s traditional musical heritage.
