Africa Amini Life - Sacred Harmony of Human and Nature
Welcome to our special place in Tanzania between Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
Why special? ↓
All our 4 properties are part of our registered non-profit organization “Africa Amini Alama”. Each social project is also financed by the incomes made through tourism lodge rentals and revenues go to the Africa Amini Alama projects to help people in the Arusha/Arumeru district with our medical, social and educational projects (caretaking of more than 1000 children, 3 primary schools, 1 secondary school, orphanage, medical treatment for more than 20.000 patients per year, job creation for 200 Tanzanians,...).
Africa Amini Alama is recognized and awarded as a charitable organization in Tanzania. In the past 15 years, only one other organization was given this prestigious status in the Arusha region, which makes Africa Amini Alama a particularly rare initiative and an important cause to support.
OUR PROPERTIES
1. MAASAI LODGE
Our Maasai Lodge Tanzania is located between Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru and is surrounded by a 200-hectare nature- and game-reserve. The lodge based on 100 % sustainable tourism and is run by Maasai. It is an ideal place for peace seekers as well as nature and culture lovers.
A special place where you immediately will come to rest and reflect on the essentials. In the middle of the wilderness of the Maasai steppe are 12 exclusive bungalows with hand crafted furniture with great view on the Kilimanjaro, Africa‘s highest mountain. Behind it and until the border of Kenya there is the savanna, home to the Maasai people. This is the right place to get to know them and their traditions and rituals, together with a slowing-down of your own lives’ pace. It‘s all about being together, traditions, stories and learning from each other.
2. HILLSIDE RETREAT
A powerful place all to yourself on the edge of Arusha National Park. Enjoy your private small pool and the personal attention of the driver, the cook and your guide. Every day will welcome you with the breathtaking view of the Arusha National Park with Mount Meru, Mukuru and the calming atmosphere of the rainforest. Your vacation home in Africa‘s wilderness: exclusively for two or up to a maximum of seven people and a second smaller private house next to the big one for up to 3 people.
3. NATURE HOMES
Our Nature Homes (formerly Guesthouses) and tents are in the midst of an acacia grove not far from the village Momella overlooking Mount Meru and Mukuru. These accommodations offer every comfort for a pleasant stay: They are all equipped with hot water, bathtub, internet access, large alcove and dining area on the veranda. In the evening you can enjoy the carefully prepared food by the local cooks, while the African wildlife roams the savannah in the sunset. A sense of home in Africa.

Our Hotelini lie on a plateau overlooking the vastness of Tanzania, between Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. The round houses can accommodate up to three people and are equipped with a kitchen, shower and toilet. Our Hotelini are best suited also for longer stays and self-catering. And for those who do not want to cook, the Africa Amini restaurant offers a wide selection of African dishes. Enjoy privacy but still experience the Africa Amini projects firsthand.

Tanzania Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Tanzania.
Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and is located slightly south of the Equator. Its large variety of nature is overwhelming and includes the Serengeti and Selous Nature Reserves, the snow-covered Kilimanjaro and the spice island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. It is a country of superlatives that originated in 1964 as a result of the union of two independent countries, Tanganika and Zanzibar. On the slopes of Meru and Kilimanjaro, coffee, maize, bananas and vegetables are grown and then offered for sale at various markets. Due to its fertile volcanic soil the entire region has been used for agriculture since the middle of the nineteenth century by both the Arusha Massai and Meru tribes. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. Tanzania is a natural paradise that is still known by only a few. An exotic country and one that is still waiting to be explored!

Tanzania 2017 - 4K
This short film features some of the best moments, scenery and wildlife uncovered during a two-week, self-drive tour of North-Eastern Tanzania in June 2017.
Touring the area in an anti-clockwise road trip covering 2,500km, we experienced the coast, mountains, rainforest, savannah and saw numerous mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and insects.
Starting in Dar Es Salaam, we drove North along the Indian Ocean, before turning inland and heading North-West towards Arusha. Along the way we stopped off at the Amani Forest Reserve in the East Usambara Mountains, Irente Farm near Lushoto in the West Usambara Mountains, the Kiliman Coffee Plantation in the foothills of Kilimanjaro itself, the Maserani Snake Park outside Arusha before emerging at the Tarangire National Park for the most incredible 24-hours of observing some of Africa's largest and most iconic mammals in their natural habitat.
After this we stayed at the Panorama Safari Campsite on the Rift Valley Escarpment overlooking Lake Manyara National Park, before embarking on a long road trip South to the capital Dodoma, and then East via Morogoro back to Dar Es Salaam.
I'd like to thank all of the extraordinarily friendly campsite hosts, villagers and locals we met during the trip for their hospitality, as well as James Borrell and Jessica Plumb who invited me along on this leg of their sixth-month overlanding tour of Southern Africa.
All footage used in this film was shot on a GoPro Hero 5 Black camera utilising the GoPro Karma Drone and Grip (my first trip with this set-up and I'm delighted with the results!) and edited using Final Cut Pro X.
The soundtrack is 'Re-arrange' by Biffy Clyro, from their 2016 album 'Ellipsis', used according to the following Youtube Music Policy:
I hope you enjoy the film!
Original Maasai Lodge Tanzania - Africa Amini Life
** Original Maasai Lodge Tanzania - Africa Amini Life **
According to local people, the lodge was built on land that was considered uninhabitable. But the country changed when the lodge took its place there. The space, which is filled with life and emotions, radiates a strong energy today.
There are 14 earth houses to choose from, which stand in different places in a replicated Maasai village. Each bungalow is powered by solar energy and offers European standard, a toilet and shower with hot water. Every day you can experience the sunrise behind Kilimanjaro on the terrace, in the midst of the African nature. International and traditional Swahili dishes are refined with home-grown herbs and served in the restaurant. Free activities such as spear throwing, dances, nature walks or campfire conversations allow you to interact with the Maasai. To relax, there is a rest area, a massage room as well as a pool and sauna. To enjoy Tanzania up close in the midst of the Maasai, and the endless expanse of the African steppe all around offer a unique experience.

The Best Places to Go on a Safari in Tanzania
If you are a wildlife buff, Africa should be at the very top of your travel bucket list (along with Yellowstone). In September, I traveled to Tanzania for a 7-day safari, one the best places on the planet to get up close to Africa’s incredible wildlife.
When I first arrived in Tanzania, I had no idea what to expect. I knew we’d see some cool animals, but I figured we’d really have to search for them. When we spotted our first zebra in Tarangire National Park, I shouted to our guide “stop stop stop! There’s a zebra. Oh my gosh, let me grab my camera.” Our guide politely chuckled and slowed down while I tried to get the perfect shot of a zebra half hidden in the trees about 100 yards away.
Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to one of the densest populations of mammals in Africa. The walls of the Ngorongoro Crater riser up to 1800 feet above the crater floor, and because the crater is completely enclosed, the 27,000 animals that live in its grasslands do not migrate and can be found year round. This includes wildebeest, zebras, warthogs, hyenas, lions, buffalo, hippos, and more!
We also spotted our first lions in Ngorongoro Crater who were not in the least bit shy. You also have your best chance of seeing the highly endangered black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater. There are only about 120 left in total in Tanzania, and 40 of them live on the Crater floor. We were lucky to spot two, but they were very far away and could only be made out with binoculars….but still….it was waaaaay cool!
With the high density of predators in Ngorongoro Crater, you also have a good chance of seeing some sort of chase. We got really lucky and caught a full kill from start to finish. (How morbid do I sound?). Anyways, we saw a hyena lurking around in the grass close to a wildebeest herd, and then all of a sudden, we saw dust fly up and a big commotion. The hyena chased the wildebeest for about a kilometer before finally taking him down. Luckily this happened right next to the road, so we were able to witness the pack of hyenas chowing down less than 10 feet away. The blood, the sounds…witnessing wild mother nature like this felt like a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
The other thing that was unique about the Ngorongoro Crater was the landscape itself. The Crater Rim, where many of the lodges are located, is a lush (often fog engulfed) rainforest, while the bottom is grasslands and savannah. Having these different ecosystems provided a nice contrasting background in the photos that you won’t get in the Serengeti.
The Serengeti
Where you go in the Serengeti depends on what you want to see and what time of year you are going to visit. June through October is the most popular time to visit the Serengeti. During this dry season, the grass is shorter making it easier to spot wildlife, roads are easier to navigate, and animals are concentrated around swamps and rivers.
In June and July, the 1.5 million wildebeest that live on the Serengeti are heading north on their annual migration and are concentrated around the Central Serengeti. If you want to see gigantic herds without having to travel too far, this is a great time. As the dry season continues, the wildebeest get further north near the border with Kenya. It’s still totally possible to see them, but you’ll spend a full day driving to get there (or you can also take a bush plane from the Serengeti airport).
When I visited in September, temperatures were super pleasant….think 80s during the day and high 60s at night. Mosquitos were at a minimum, and we still saw a TON of animals. September is also the tail end of the busy season, so crowds were pretty thin. For example, our night at the Kiota Camp (which has a 60 guest capacity), there were only 11 guests (including our group of 5). Going when there are fewer people means there are fewer cars on the road to disturb the wildlife and overall a better experience in my opinion.
We encountered several large families of elephants crossing the road right in front of our jeep, saw at least 50 lions, cheetahs, the elusive leopard, gazelles everywhere, hundreds of hippos, etc.
Our guide told us that January and February are also nice times to visit. Everything is super green, and it’s wildebeest caving season….which also means it’s a great time to catch some predator action. Rates are also lower during this time and you’ll encounter the least amount of people.
There are a ton of different lodge and camp options in the Serengeti. You can even do actual camping (not glamping) if you are on a budget. Whatever guide company you choose should be able to make several recommendations for accommodations based on your budget and your itinerary.

Original Maasai Lodge - Africa Amini Life
Built and run by the Maasai, the Original Maasai Lodge offers nature, culture and relaxation with views of Kilimanjaro. Get to know the Maasai through campfire stories, spear throwing or traditional dances. The pool, massage rooms, sauna and rest areas are just right for relaxation. With a total of 14 bungalows we guarantee exclusivity, individuality and authenticity.
** AFRICA AMINI LIFE **
It is part of Africa Amini Life. Africa Amini Life currently consists of three different accommodations, two of which are located on the edge of the Arusha National Park in Momella (Hillside Retreat & Nature Homes) and the Original Maasai Lodge, which is perfectly camouflaged in the midst of unspoiled nature.
** OUR IMPACT - HOW IT BEGAN **
In her search for evidence of traditional medicine and ethnomedicine, which led her to the Amazon region, Tibet, India and Tanzania, Christine Wallner found a new area of responsibility in the small village of Momella in Tanzania in 2008. With the construction of dispensary, several schools, a workshop for carpenters, bricklayers and mechanics she founded Africa Amini Alama – Africa, I believe in you.
Her daughter Cornelia Wallner-Frisee followed her two years later and has been leading the local charity organization with her ever since. Each of the projects is led by locals with the aim of sustaining themselves in the long term. With a team of over 200 employees, around 100 patients are treated daily and around 1000 children are cared for.
In order to finance the different projects of Africa Amini Alama, the charitable tourism organization Africa Amini Life was founded. All income that we generate through overnight stays, activities and excursions is directly invested in the orphanage, schools and hospital. If money can be associated with feelings and experiences, we believe that those who cannot take care of themselves can be helped.
All our projects can be visited free of charge.

Arusha is a city of approximately 400,000 people in Northeast Tanzania, East Africa. It's regarded as the gateway to the popular Northern Safari Circuit.
Arusha, also known as A Town by the locals, is situated at the foot of Mount Meru, Africa's 5th highest mountain. The altitude gives the city a pleasant climate and lush green environment.
Arusha is not a particularly attractive city in itself and is regarded by many visitors as little more than a necessary stopover before their safari starts in earnest. However, the natural charm of the Tanzanians and the buzz of a fast-growing city mean that Arusha has plenty to offer for those who are prepared to see beyond their air-conditioned safari trucks and satellite-TV equipped hotel rooms.
Arusha is home to the UNMICT, the successor to the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It is also the site of the signing of the Arusha Declaration.
Safari in Arusha, Tanzania
=====================
Definitely something to try, if you can afford it. There are many types of trips for many budgets; usually the pricier ones get you out farther into the Serengeti and the Ngorogongoro Crater, to places that are a little less touched by man. The less expensive excursions to reserves and parks are specialized, of a shorter duration, and worthwhile. If there's one trip that will change your perspective on life, it's an African safari.
Not all tour guides are knowledgeable on all topics. A field guide to your favourite pursuit, such as birding, which is popular with visitors, is a worthwhile idea.
Beware of paying more than market prices, you will still be offered the same accommodation as the person who is paying the regular price.

See and Do in Arusha, Tanzania
==========================
Climb Mount Meru (4,667m). It can be done in 2-4 days, depending on your physical condition. You are not required to take guides and porters up Mount Meru, but you must be escorted by armed rangers. Temperatures can be freezing, so prepare warm clothing and sleeping bags.
Tanzania Tourist Board can arrange cultural excursions to nearby villages for TZS15,000-50,000. These cultural tourism visits can be some of the most rewarding parts of a trip to East Africa, and the human (cultural) element involved complements an animal-centric safari to the game parks. Some cultural tourism programs (Ilkiding'a, Ng'iresi) are within an hour's hike of Arusha. Several others are within an hour's drive (Monduli Juu, Longido, Mulala, Tengeru, Ilkurot, Oldonyo Sambu). They are great opportunities to learn about the Maasai and Meru tribes who live nearby, pastoralism, agriculture, stories & legends, local economies. There are several good hikes around Mt. Meru, including some beautiful waterfalls. Longido has camel safaris. They are flexible in nature, meaning you can arrange an hour-long visit or a day-long one. Some sites have lodging or camping.
Keep in mind your guide may ask for donations to a charity, school or orphanage. Some dishonest guides might pocket the money, so it is advisable to give money directly to a reputable charity. The guide will give you that information.
Century Cinema has movies for TZS5,000-7,000 (USD3-5). It is part of a modern complex on Njiro Rd, which also houses modern and upmarket restaurants including popular Indian restaurant Khan's, steak outlet McMoody's and serving Ethiopian, Tanzanian, European and other cuisines is a restaurant Spice Retreat. Njiro Rd is not safe to walk on at night, so get to the complex by another form of transport rather than by foot. A taxi to/from the town centre shouldn't cost more than TZS4,000 (USD3).

Coffee walk arranged by local coffee company on the slopes of Mt. Meru.
