Weekend sailing lesson: From Athens to Aegina island - This Blue Life
In one of our final practical lessons for our Greek sailing licences, we excitedly packed waterproof bags and set off for a weekend-long lesson that involved sailing from our club base at Athens' Flisvos Marina to the Saronic island of Aegina.
Together with Nautical Club of Palaio Faliron instructor Lazaros Ioannidis, we plotted our course for Aegina, not with a GPS but old-school style with a divider and a parallel rule. We checked Rod Heikell's Greek Waters Pilot and ensured to avoid reefs and shallow waters.
We arrived at the island's main town, of the same name, in the early evening and gathered together with our fellow students for a fabulous meze dinner at a taverna right on the water just as the sun started to set. Lazaros regaled us with amusing sea tales.
Aegina's port was bustling with yacht and ferry traffic, busier than we expected on an early Spring weekend.
Lazaros and the younger members of our group partied at Aegina's bars, tucked in the town's backstreets, till the early hours but we crashed at our hotel.
Early the next morning, we gathered for breakfast and headed out, this time with instructor Giorgos Mitropoulos and racing yacht Exionas.
On our return to base, powered by steady winds, Giorgos explained some of the intricacies of sail trimming and achieving an optimum slot between the mainsail and Genoa. His method of teaching is straightforward and easy to comprehend.
We carefully ducked around the numerous tankers plying the Saronic Sea, including one ghost ship that Giorgos noted we should be wary of when sailing in the area at night.
All in all, a brilliant weekend of sailing lessons and bonding with our fellow future sailors. As newbie sailors, this will be a frequent weekend route for us as the Saronic offers relatively calm seas and Aegina is in close proximity to the mainland.

From flat seas to Force 5: A day out in Aegina with NISI Sailing
Athens is way too hot right now.
So, one recent Friday we decided to go meet our friends Alex, Natalie and Kenickie, their perky Papillon, of NISI Sailing Adventures, on the Saronic island of Aegina.
We jumped on a (conventional) morning ferry that was bustling with excited holidaymakers from Piraeus and, in an hour and 15 minutes, arrived at the island's main port in the capital which is also called Aegina, where Alex was waiting for us.
Alex, who hails from Barcelona, and his American wife Natalie showed us around their beautiful, roomy 39-foot Elan Impression, the sailing yacht of their dreams which they purchased in Italy and brought to Greece. They aptly named her NISI, which translates as island in Greek.
We were so impressed with how solidly built and spacious she is, particularly the saloon, which has plenty of height, even for Carlo, who is over 6 foot tall. It's sort of a semi deck saloon. Like all of the recent Elan models, the designers have incorporated good-sized windows which allow plenty of light in.
Soon enough, we motored out of the port across deep aqua waters heading northwest in the direction of Agios Thomas island, basically in search of some wind.
We hoisted the main and Genoa then Alex suggested we bring out the cruising chute, which they had only used a couple of times before, to harness some wind. We joked around, guessing the cruising speed, which averaged around two or three knots.
The chute is a real beauty. With royal blue and white stripes and what could be deemed a cross, it reminded us very much of the Greek flag, so I'm sure they receive plenty of compliments from local fellow sailors passing by.
The little wind we had disappeared completely, turning the waters around us into what looked like a vast lake. Alex took the opportunity to do a little paddle-boarding on their new SUP and literally circled round an almost motionless NISI.
Kenickie is no fan of the sea and didn't even really like it when Natalie sprayed him with some fresh water to cool him down. He stayed on board, snuggling up on Carlo's lap. Kenickie took a real liking to Carlo, as most dogs do.
He suggested we turn around and head back towards Aegina to catch the usual afternoon sea breeze, which seemed like it wasn't anywhere in sight just yet.
But as we started to approach the island, the wind appeared, almost out of nowhere, reaching speeds of around Force 5. Finally, we could get in some sailing!
Carlo and I had great fun taking turns at the helm of NISI, close hauling at around 8 or 9 knots and heeling our way toward the port.
It was time to take in the sails and find a spot to moor NISI. That's no easy feat though. Aegina port is busier than ever this summer, with dozens of motor and sailing yachts arriving daily and looking to dock.
The day came to an end with an early dinner of grilled sardines, lamb chops and Cretan dakos salad at a simple yet lovely waterfront taverna that Alex and Natalie visit often.
We had a truly wonderful day out with Alex, Natalie and Kenickie, who clearly are in love with Greece and are the perfect hosts.
We took the flying dolphin back to Piraeus, watching as the sun started to set over a tiny white chapel on the jetty and then the Saronic Sea. That's our kinda Friday.
A little more on NISI Sailing
Based on Aegina, Alex and Natalie launched NISI Sailing this year. They arrange week-long (or longer) skippered sailing holidays in the Saronic Gulf, exploring mainland destinations in the Peloponnese and greater Athens along with nearby islands, or a one-way sailing tour from Aegina to Mykonos, with island stops along the way.
Alex, an Offshore Yachtmaster certified by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and American Sailing Association (ASA), worked as a sailing instructor at the Aegean Sailing School on Aegina, which runs RYA sailing courses.
He skippers NISI and Natalie, who is an RYA-certified Day Skipper, assists in sailing the yacht and arranges meals and activities on and off board. Kenickie, meanwhile, will happily accept gentle pats and is always in a good mood.

Sailing Jollies - Sunset, Platarias, Greece
Clip from another great Sailing Jolly, this one in the Ionian Islands in April 2011.
A Jolly is a unique concept and I am sure nobody else is doing exactly what I do.
I can also help you choose from of a variety of sailing experiences; Bareboat and Skippered Charters, Milebuilders, Deliveries, RYA Courses and Racing, all through a network of contacts I know and trust to provide a quality service, in a fun, safe atmosphere and all on properly coded, quality yachts.
My real Jollies allow you as an Individual or couple / pair of friends can take a cabin and join me or one of my approved Skippers on a shared yacht. Meet new friends and relax, or work together as a team, getting as involved and learning as much as you like as you go. I organise everything and introduce all guests personally before we go, so we all get to know one another first, and all can be part of the planning and preparation process.
