Congo: A journey to the heart of Africa - Full documentary - BBC Africa
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a vast, mineral rich country the size of Western Europe.
Alastair Leithead takes an epic journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the far reaches of the Congo river to explore how history has shaped the Congo of today and uncover the lesser told stories of this beautiful, if troubled country.
In the largest rainforest outside of the Amazon he comes face to face with its gorillas and hunts with pygmies, he travels into the heart of the Ebola outbreak with United Nations peacekeepers, and explores the cobalt mines which will drive our electric cars of the future.

Expedition DR Congo | Where Whites Can’t Date Africans
Expedition DR Congo | Where Whites Can’t Date Africans
Welcome to my channel and this week’s video is about Expedition to DR Congo, Where Whites Can’t Date Africans. Travel to democratic republic of Congo like never before.
Learn about my DR Congo Travel adventure to one of the most natural place in the world. In this video I will show you Budget Travel Tips for DR Congo, Things to do and Places to visit in DR Congo.
It is an extremely alluring region: green and mountainous, with people who, for the most part, are extremely friendly and helpful. But the main attraction is primate tourism.
Encounters with mountain gorillas are much sought-after. They are found only in the Virunga Massif (a chain of eight volcanoes spanning eastern DRC, western Rwanda and western Uganda), and in the adjoining Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the southwest corner of Uganda.
Despite some of the political and social problems, Congo (both countries) still holds a powerful allure for travelers to Africa searching for something a little different, on the road less travelled.
Whether you venture into the Republic of Congo, with its unique parks and lowland gorillas, or delve into the DRC in search of mountain gorillas in Virunga, visiting these forests is a life-changing experience, and a true voyage into the heart of untouched Africa.

Democratic Republic of the Congo:
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (About this sound pronunciation (help info) French: République démocratique du Congo [kɔ̃ɡo]), also known as DR Congo, the DRC, DROC, Congo-Kinshasa, or simply the Congo, is a country located in Central Africa. It was formerly called Zaire (1971–1997). It is, by area, the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa, the second-largest in all of Africa (after Algeria), and the 11th-largest in the world. With a population of over 84 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the most populous officially Francophone country, the fourth-most-populous country in Africa, and the 16th-most-populous country in the world. Eastern DR Congo has been the scene of ongoing military conflict in Kivu, since 2015.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is extremely rich in natural resources but has had political instability, a lack of infrastructure, issues with corruption and centuries of both commercial and colonial extraction and exploitation with little holistic development. Besides the capital Kinshasa, the two next largest cities
Lubumbashi and Mbuji-Mayi are both mining communities.
DR Congo's largest export is raw minerals, with China accepting over 50% of DRC's exports in 2012. In 2016, DR Congo's level of human development was ranked 176th out of 187 countries by the Human Development Index. As of 2018, around 600,000 Congolese have fled to neighboring countries from conflicts in the center and east of the DRC. Two million children risk starvation, and the fighting has displaced 4.5 million people. The sovereign state is a member of the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement, African Union, and COMESA.

The DRC by Jeep
Join me as I drive my Overland Modified Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa.
In this episode I cross the infamous Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - formally Zaire. Simply getting to the border turns into an expedition, then the slog to the Mighty Congo River and the ferry to cross.

Crossing Congo
It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - excluding two fellow travelers I met just at the start of my journey.
Finding sights on a map of this huge country is a challenge, but reaching them is even harder. My adventure begins along the border to Rwanda, climbing an active volcano and with a visit to the famous mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park. Continuing in Kisangani, the touristy sights almost vanish and a historical-shaded drift on the Congo River begins. Following the call of the jungle, I leave the river and take a hard daytrip over the washed-away infrastructure of the north-western Congo. While a boat ride may take a couple of more days, maybe even weeks, I head to Mbandaka by plane before finishing the journey in Kinshasa, the shiny, even too shiny, capital of the DRC.

Congo A journey to the heart of Africa - Full documentary HD
The lush landscapes and winding waters of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are a beautiful deception. Beneath these natural wonders lies a long and traumatic history of poverty and conflict. Congo: A Journey to the Heart of Africa offers a travelogue through the countryside that proves equal parts harrowing and awe-inspiring.
The country is rich in natural resources, but its people are among the poorest in the world. An upcoming election provides a glimmer of hope for change. The filmmakers step aboard a boat to begin a 3,000 mile journey down and around the Congo River. They're looking for the lingering signs of the country's tumultuous past, and possible signs that point to the potential for a more promising future.
A series of stops along the way shine a spotlight on a unique culture, a shared history of strife and violence, and steep challenges they continue to face with great bravery and determination. Powerful rapids outside of Burma could be used to harness enough hydroelectric energy to power the entire nation. Thus far, this opportunity has not been realized.
Deep in the forest, a pygmy tribe ventures out to hunt for food and secure their livelihoods. Armed with machetes, they hack at rubber trees and collect the valuable sap. Under the reign of King Leopold II over a hundred years ago, gatherers just like them would have their hands severed if they failed to meet their daily quota of sap.
Workers at a nature reserve on the fringes of the rain forest take samples of plantation for climate change research, and attempt to curb the destruction of their country's most prized asset through innovative planting techniques.
In a secluded national park, they catch sight of one of the most endangered species in the region - the eastern lowland gorilla - and observe these majestic creatures in the comfort of their natural habitat.
Stepping through the eastern Congo with peacekeepers from the United Nations, the filmmakers witness an environment plagued by an outbreak of Ebola.
Congo: A Journey to the Heart of Africa takes the viewer on a breathless journey. By the film's conclusion, one feels they've gained a palpable sense of the country, their people, and the promise of a more prosperous future.

Congo: Travel inspired fashion [The Morning Call]
When people travel, it's for different reasons: for work, for family, for adventure or maybe to look for love.
As Saint Augustine of Hippo rightly put it, the world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

D. R. Congo motorcycle trip, Part 1/2 - mad nomad
We knew that the Democratic Republic of the Congo would be the toughest part of our adventure. Christina was worried about the rough track from Kinshasa to Lubumbashi, which is 2,500 km (1,553 miles), while I was worried about the ridiculously corrupted officers of this country...

STORYLINE:
In January, United Nations-backed Congo troops battled Congolese and Rwandan rebels in the Ituri region of the Virunga National Park . Government forces say rebel groups have been attacking villagers in the park. Congolese government troops are trying to re-establish authority nationwide before elections planned for next year, battling home-grown militia fighters as well as rebels from neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda .
About 1,000 Ugandan fighters are in the country, running guns, poaching endangered wildlife and terrorising Congolese civilians, officials say. Some 15,000 UN troops are in Congo to help provide security in a country the size of Western Europe and long wracked by war, army revolts and coups d'etat.

STORYLINE:
In July Congo held its first multiparty election in more than four decades, a colossal democratic exercise many hope will secure an end to years of fighting and corrupt rule that have devastated this gigantic, mineral-rich nation in the heart of Africa.
However troops loyal to the two final candidates clashed around the home of President Joseph Kabila's challenger Jean-Pierre Bemba. The next day the United Nations demanded an immediate cease-fire as the European Union sent reinforcements to the restive Central African nation. Fourteen people were reported dead from gun battles in the capital, Kinshasa
Heavy gunfire rang out before dawn and fighting raged for hours until the United Nations, with 17,500 peacekeepers in Congo , demanded a halt to hostilities.
About 1,000 EU troops are in Congo , on hand to help the U.N. peace force overseeing the first elections in 45 years of coups d'etat, corrupt rule and war.
With 16.9 million votes cast in the ballot, Kabila won 45 percent of the votes against 20 percent for Bemba. The elections are meant to end years of unrest that began shortly after independence from Belgium in 1960.
In the lead-up to the elections, clashes at a campaign rally killed at least one person dead. The violence followed a fire of undetermined origin at a camp for militiamen attached to a main Congolese presidential candidate, who was holding a campaign rally at a stadium elsewhere in Kinshasa .
There appeared to be no serious injuries, though most of the shacks that made up the camp were destroyed. Gunfire broke out outside the stadium when word reached the crowd there of the fire at the camp, where militiamen lived with their families.
Bemba was just approaching the stadium when the melee erupted. He later addressed the crowd inside.
Thousands of people had marched from Kinshasa 's airport for the rally.

Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano with an elevation of 3,470 metres (11,380 ft) in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Albertine Rift. It is located inside Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km (12 mi) north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. The main crater is about two kilometres wide and usually contains a lava lake. The crater presently has two distinct cooled lava benches within the crater walls – one at about 3,175 m (10,417 ft) and a lower one at about 2,975 m (9,760 ft). Nyiragongo's lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history. The depth of the lava lake varies considerably. A maximum elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 3,250 m (10,660 ft) prior to the January 1977 eruption – a lake depth of about 600 m (2,000 ft). A recent very low elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 2,700 m (8,900 ft). Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40% of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions. The Time I Almost Died in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
Processing this video was actually really hard for me. I know that there isn't much footage, so I'm sure it doesn't have the same effect on you as it does for me. But looking back at the state I was during this video I go from a low to a high.
I nearly died in the DRC, a woman named Mama Bridgette saved me and brought me to a hospital, and I don't remember that since I was passed out. She stayed with me, fed me, and made sure I was ok the whole time. She was really amazing. Without her, there's a good chance I would have died that day.
From there I hit Kinshasa, a town that scared me. I felt abused and paranoid at every turn. It really was a low point for me. I nearly quit here so many times.
Then, arriving in Zambia, was such a high. My god, it nearly brought me to tears seeing the video again. I just felt such a feeling of accomplishment when I got there. I felt like I made it, like the worst was over. And looking back now, it really was.
Such an amazing adventure in Africa, and even though this is mostly just a video diary, for me it's so special to look back and see it all.
