Three Came Home - Movie
Three Came Home:
This is a true story about an American woman, Agnes Newton Keith, who lived in Sandakan, British North Borneo, on the island of Borneo, with her husband, Harry, who was a British government official. They had a 4-year-old son named George.
The Japanese invaded Jesselton, British North Borneo on January 11, in 1942. When the Japanese landed in Sandakan without resistance, Agnes, her young son and her husband, together with all other Bristish officials and their families were in house arrest. On May 12, 1942, they were sent to a concentration camp on Berhala Island at the entrance to Sandakan Harbour. The men were separated from the women and children. Later they were transferred to Batu Lintang camp at Kuching in Sarawak until the end of the war on September 11, 1945 when they were released and re-united.
The story of Three Came Home is based on Agnes Newton Keith's autobiography. In this movie, Mrs. Keith recounts her experiences in the Japanese POW camps in Sandakan and in Kuching during her internment as POW. Despite the kindness of the camp's commander, Mrs. Keith was tortured, starved, and humiliated by the Japanese guards.
The first opening scene of the movie, the overview of the post-war town of Sandakan, was shot at the 100-steps walkway on the Red Hill Top. The pre-war town of Sandakan was destroyed by the allied forces during liberation.
The opening street scenes were taken at the north end of Lorong Dua and north of Jalan Tiga, between the present-day police station and Sandakan Hotel, looking towards the south end of Lorong Dua by the sea at Sandakan harbour, in 1950 when the movie was made. In the foreground of the first street scene, it was the open-air morning food stall area, with the meat, fish and vegetable market on the right. The shop houses were rebuilt after the old town was destroyed by allied forces during liberation. Most shop houses were built of wood, with thatched roofs of attap. All these shop houses were burnt down in the big fire of 1955 when the whole town was razed to the ground. They were rebuilt in concrete buildings, and a new market was built by the waterfront south of Lorong Dua, with the bus terminal next to it. In the early 2000's the market was rebuilt at the present location east of the old market.
Today, the Sunday Market is held every Sunday morning at the 1950 street scene, on Lorong Dua between Jalan Dua and Jalan Tiga.
Agnes Newton Keith is the author of the popular book Land Below The Wind about Borneo. It was written before 1942.
British North Borneo was renamed Sabah in 1963 when it joined Sarawak with Malaya to form the federation of Malaysia.

Berhala Island - Tourist Attractions in Malaysia
Berhala Island (Pulau Berhala in Malay) is a small forested island situated in Sandakan Bay in Sandakan, Sabah, East Malaysia.
The island is approximately 5 hectares in size and has prominent cliffs at its northern end. Many birds of prey can be seen on and around Berhala, including Brahminy Kites, Serpent Eagles and Sea Eagles.
The island has a lighthouse at its highest point.
In the period prior to World War II, the island was used as a quarantine station for labourers coming from China and the Philippines, and was also home to a leper colony. During the war, civilian internees, including Agnes Newton Keith and her husband Harry Keith were held in the quarantine station which served as a makeshift internment camp, before being transferred to Batu Lintang camp in Kuching, Sarawak. After the civilians left, POWs were interned in the camp. A daring escape took place from Berhala Island in June 1943, when several POWs who were due to be transferred to Sandakan POW camp managed to escape to Tawi-Tawi in the Philippines.
Plans are currently in development to promote Berhala Island as a tourist attraction.
(Land below the wind),DJI Osmo Pocket @ Agnes Keith House
Agnes Keith House is a historic house museum in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. The museum is named after Agnes Newton Keith, an American author known for her three autobiographical accounts of life in British North Borneo.
