Cape Agulhas and the old Lighthouse
Cape Agulhas lies near Struisbaai at South Africa's Overberg Coast in the Western Cape province.
Portuguese seafarers named Africa's southern-most tip, Needle Cape because here, their compass needle pointed straight to the north with no deviation. An alternative opinion says that the name stems from the ragged and pointed reefs offshore.
As the southernmost tip of the continent, Cape Agulhas is also officially the point where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean meet. The waters near the coast are quite shallow and known as the best fishing grounds in South Africa. They are called the Agulhas Bank and it is less than 100 metres deep. Only after 250 kilometres seawards, does it go steeply down.
Cape Agulhas is rough and storm-beaten. The many shipwrecks here bear witness to the mighty storms in this region. A boardwalk leads - along the beach - through the Agulhas National Park to the beacon at the tip of the continent - where - officially - the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean meet.
The massive lighthouse, built in 1848, is worth a visit. The lighthouse is still today, despite the satellite navigation systems of modern vessels, fully operational. The mighty lights have a range of almost 60 kilometres. The tower can be visited.
Because the coastal Fynbos vegetation is extraordinarily rich and diverse, the Agulhas Plain was recently declared a National Park . More than 2000 different plants grow there, 100 of them are exclusive to this area.

Cape L'Agulhas - The Southern Most Tip of Africa
Check out Inspired Risk's first feature-length documentary:
L'Agulhas is the most southern coastal village and holiday resort in Africa, located within the Cape Agulhas Municipal area at the southernmost tip of the African mainland. It is situated next to the town of Struisbaai and about 30 kilometres south of the regional centre of Bredasdorp. The name Agulhas, Portuguese for needles, is said to have been given to the cape because the compass-needle was seen to point due north, that is, with no magnetic deviation. The Agulhas Bank is reputed to be the richest fishing area in the Southern Hemisphere. Some of the older residents and documents refer to the town as by its former name Cape Agulhas or Cape L'Agulhas or simply Agulhas which were the names that referred to this town before it was changed to L'Agulhas to avoid confusion when the Bredasdorp Municipality changed its name to The Cape Agulhas Municipality.
Tourist interests and activities include: A visit to the Lighthouse with a view from the tower and a walkway along the seafront to the new most southern African monument and a place where two oceans meet at the foot of Africa. A little further along the walkway is the shipwreck of Meisho Maru. Tourists also enjoy the local fyhbos plants, bird watching, hiking, swimming in the local tidal pools or a game of Jukskei on Saturday mornings. Other interests are visiting arts and craft shops, local wine sales, shops and restaurants or enjoy a meal at one of the best local fish restaurants in the area. L’Agulhas is a peaceful town and a ‘get away’ from busy city living.

Kap Agulhas

Cape Peninsula
The scenic Cape Peninsula, part of Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park. It begins southwest of Table Mountain und stretches all the way to the Cape of Good Hope, over a distance of 40 kilometres. The mountains are covered with dense Fynbos vegetation. Many bays and coves with beautiful beaches, in the west along the Atlantic and in the East at the Indian Ocean.
The journey starts in the pittoresc fishing village of Hout Bay with the busy harbour and lively promenade. Substantial amounts of fish are unloaded here every day. Mostly it is snoek or hake, mainly for export to Spain. Behind the fishing boats: the arts and crafts market with items from all over Africa, including diamonds. Boat rides on the bay are quite popular. As a farewell - and a welcome on return - the colourfully dressed street musicians from the Hangklip quarter play and sing their tunes.
Proceeding to the Cape - on the Chapman's Peak Drive - along the Atlantic coast. To the left of the road - wonderful hiking trails into the Table Mountain National Park. The proteas are part of the unique fynbos vegetation. At Chapman's Point the view of Hout Bay is overwhelming. Here starts the most dramatic part of the stretch. Steep rockwalls, narrow curves and gallery tunnels, and to the right the endless blue Atlantic ocean. Behind the last bend a wide view opens. In front lies the wild sandy beach of Noordhoek. One of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa.
Close to the Cape: ostriches at the sea. The Cape of Good Hope is often crowded. Everybody wants to be on the photo. A bit further to the south-east lies the second tip: Cape Point. The funicular starts at the restaurant and drives uphill to the old lighthouse. It's more invigorating though to walk up the mountain. Once arrived one is rewarded with magic panoramic views. To the east the Indian Ocean - to the west the Atlantic - and to the south the rugged tip of the African continent.
Back along the Indian Ocean. To Simon's Town with its pretty Victorian houses and the harbour. A boardwalk leads along the beach to the town's greatest attraction - the penguin colony at Foxy Beach and Boulders Beach. Once threatened by extinction, 3000 breeding pairs of African Penguins are living here nowadays. The beach is protected by huge round granite boulders. Seamed by Milkwood thicket, providing the penguins with an ideal breeding habitat. Swimming is allowed at Boulders Beach. Sometimes people and penguins can be seen together in the clear shallow water.
