Cape Town to the Garden Route - Exploring the Overberg
Episode 31: The N2 freeway that runs from Cape Town towards the Garden Route must be one of the most frequently traveled tourist routes in South Africa. While the freeway may be the quickest way to get from one destination to the other, Bevan and I are not well-known to choose speed over scenery! We decided to take things a little slower and turn our drive out of Cape Town into a coastal meander along the R43.

Western Cape - South Africa Travel Channel
Western Cape (Wes-Kaap) is a province of South Africa, which is bordered by both the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean.
If you leave Cape Town early in the morning in western direction you will experience the sunrise and the region in its most beautiful colors.
After leaving the Cape Town District , one crosses Overberg, which means as much as behind the mountain of the Hottentots Holland mountain range. This is followed by the Eden District, named after the Garden of Eden. The road runs along the Karoo, a semi-desert landscape.
Who finds himself unexpectedly in front of the sign of Heidelberg, hasn't lost his way. The name suggests that the place was founded by emigrants from Heidelberg.
We reach the coast at Moselle Bay and experience again spectacular beaches. But when bathing one should be careful, because not only the man loves this coast, but also the great white shark.
This landscape is characterized by numerous lagoons that extend far in the hinterland. Villages, such as Knysna, were founded at the lagoons.

De Kelders is a coastal village in the Overberg District Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa. Holiday resort 19 km south-west of Stanford, between Gans Bay and Hermanus.
A local farmer knew of its existence in 1776, and he informed Hendrik Swellengrebel Jr., who visited it on horseback, a two-and-a-half hour ride from Jan Swart’s farm in the Uilen Kraals valley. Inside the cave Swellengrebel found stalagmites and stalactites fused to create pillars as thick as a man’s arm. The front of the cave had fewer pillars than its rear, and this destruction he blamed on the baboons, which he thought were too timid to venture far inside. Cave Tours are available through this magical caves with a headtorch and helmet; the opportunity to swim in the caves also exists.
