Akhnoor Fort | Ancient Buddhist Site | Pandav Gufa | Rahul Singh | Vlog 005
Akhnoor Fort -
In the quaint town of Akhnoor, about 28 kilometres away from Jammu city, lies the majestic Akhnoor Fort. The Chenab River, flowing close to the fort, enhances the beauty of the place. Started by Mian Tej Singh in 1762 A.D., the construction of the fort took 40 years to complete.
Built across two floors, this structure features arches and beautiful mural paintings. Besides, the huge walls, bastions, watch-towers, battlements and merlons are quite a sight to behold.
Ancient Buddhist Site -
A Buddhist monastic complex on the right bank of river Chenab, at Ambaran, near Akhnoor and dates back from 1st century BCE to 4th-5th century CE, gave a strong physical proof of a vibrant Buddhist phase in Jammu.
Some coins, terracotta beads and other articles of Kaniska- the great Kushan Emperor unearthed there and are exhibited in a small room/gallery.
The site was abandoned during the seventh Century AD due to flash floods in the area and the decline of Buddhism in the region. While the remains of the platform are there for visitors to see.
Prachin Pandav Gufa -
The cave symbolizes the period of Agyatvas which the Pandavas spent as servant working in the palace of king Virat. It also symbolizes the restoration of faith by the virtue of dedicated meditation under taken by the Pandavas. It is said that Pandavas had come to this place and incorporated a Shivling to seek blessing of Lord Shiva. During Agyatvas period Lord Krishna is said to have visited this cave in form of a child.
It is said that the other end of the cave leads to Shri Amarnath Ji shrine in Kashmir.
