Alameda, California
Alameda is a city in Alameda County, California. It is located on Alameda Island and Bay Farm Island, and is adjacent to and south of Oakland and east of San Francisco across the San Francisco Bay. Bay Farm Island, a portion of which is also known as Harbor Bay Isle, is not actually an island, and is part of the mainland adjacent to the Oakland International Airport. The city's population was 79,277 in 2016.
The island Alameda occupies what was originally a peninsula connected to Oakland. Much of it was low-lying and marshy, but on higher ground than the peninsula and adjacent parts of what is now downtown Oakland were home to one of the largest coastal oak forests in the world. The area was therefore called Encinal, Spanish for forest of evergreen oak.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23 square miles of which 10.6 square miles is land and 12.3 square miles is water.
Although Alameda's nickname is The Island City (or simply the island), the current city occupies two islands as well as a small section of the mainland.

CITY OF ALAMEDA GETS NAVY BASE 6-24-13
For nearly two decades the Alameda naval base has sat like a military ghost town.
The vacant area now appears to be on the move, with plans to fill the site with new homes and commercial buildings.
The Navy on Monday officially handed over the land back to the City of Alameda to get the ball rolling on the projects.
NBC Bat Area's Joe Rosato Jr. reports. I shot and edited.
USS Hornet Most Haunted WARSHIP. Tower Night Ghost.
Moored. The Hornet is the most haunted warships in the American Navy, with numerous reports of supernatural events occurring on board. The tower, at night, looking like a dark scarecrow, with two lights like glowing eyes.
USS Hornet (CV/CVA/CVS-12) is a United States Navy aircraft carrier of the Essex class. Construction started in August 1942; she was originally named USS Kearsarge, but was renamed in honor of the USS Hornet (CV-8), which was lost in October 1942, becoming the eighth ship to bear the name.
Hornet was commissioned in November 1943, and after three months of training joined the U.S. forces in the Pacific War. She played a major part in the Pacific battles of World War II, and also took part in Operation Magic Carpet, returning troops back to the U.S. Following World War II, she served in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and also played a part in the Apollo program, recovering astronauts as they returned from the Moon.
Hornet was finally decommissioned in 1970. She was eventually designated as both a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark, and in 1998 she opened to the public as the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda, California.
