DOG SLEDDING IN ALASKA!!! Glacier Helicopter Tour in Juneau - CRUISE WEEK Day 2
NORWEGIAN BLISS CRUISE WEEK:
DAY 1 - Norwegian Bliss:
DAY 2 - Dog Sledding in Juneau:
DAY 3 - Zip Line in Skagway:
DAY 4 - Water Slides in Glacier Bay:
DAY 5 - Bear in Ketchikan:
We made it to Alaska! The Norwegian Bliss traveled through the Alaskan Inside Passage and arrived in the state's capital Juneau, AK. We spent the morning whale watching before heading off the ship to our scheduled excursion. We signed up for the Glacier Helicopter Ride and Dog Sledding Adventure (Coastal Helicopters / Icefield Expeditions). We took a helicopter ride up to the Mendenhall and Herbert Glaciers where the dog camp was based. We got an introduction to dog sledding and met up with our furry team of Alaskan Huskies. Now what it's like to be dog mushers. We had a blast and finished off the excursion hanging out with the puppies before our helicopter flight back to the airport.
We had a nice dinner after returning to the ship and then headed to the Cavern Club where DT gave a karaoke concert.

Mendenhall Glacier is a glacier about 12 miles (19 km) long located in Mendenhall Valley, about 12 miles (19 km) from downtown Juneau in the southeast area of the U.S. state of Alaska. The glacier and surrounding landscape is protected as the 5,815-acre Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, a federally designated unit of the Tongass National Forest.[2]
Originally known as Sitaantaagu (the Glacier Behind the Town) or Aak'wtaaksit (the Glacier Behind the Little Lake) by the Tlingits, the glacier was named Auke (Auk) Glacier by naturalist John Muir for the Tlingit Auk Kwaan (or Aak'w Kwaan) band in 1888. More info:
Dog Sledding on Denver Glacier, AK
The best excursion of our entire Alaskan cruise. A great helicopter tour out of Skagway of several glaciers before landing on Denver Glacier where Alaska Icefield Expeditions maintains summer camps for training sled dogs. Our guide was Alyssa Komac and she and her boyfriend Matt Hall own 26 of the dogs in the video. A great time sledding and of course dog petting.

Mendenhall Ice field - Alaska
The Mendenhall Ice Field
Located near Alaska's capital Juneau. One Lucky day I had the chance to fly up there with a helicoper and stand on top of 1500m ice and snow. The land of the worlds last frontier at its best.
Dog Sledding - Skagway, Alaska - Denver Glacier 2014 - GoPro Hero3+
First video taken with the GoPro Hero3+ using a head strap. I am not a professional extreme-sporting-enthusiast as you will soon see, but hey... I did the best I could, and I had a blast!
This was taken in Skagway, Alaska on the Denver Glacier on an excursion we took with the Alaska Icefield Expeditions Tour Company (Absolutely Fantastic people, btw).
I tried to edit the video to show a few highlights. The whole thing was a 2-hour excursion so bear with me! I'll break it down for you in case you want to skip ahead, but I think it's all worth watching so you can (at the very least) laugh at me!
NOTE: I was a wee-bit excited and caught off guard a few times so a couple swear words escaped my mouth. Those of you who know me know I NEVER swear - har har har - so I apologoze for the cursing, and have marked this as not suitable for the young ones. Otherwise, enjoy!
...
Beginning - Loading up on the helicopter.
1:22 - Scenic views
1:43 - Scenic views
4:00 - Starts to look pretty foggy and (you can't hear but) the pilot tells us that it's possible we may have to turn back b/c it's so foggy.
4:40 - We begin to approach and you can see the glacier, as well as the thick foggy layer above the ice
6:50 - Seems like the fog starts to lift a bit and you see a lot more detail in the glacier crevices. Really cool so look closely!
8:30 - All of the sudden the fog lifts and we're able to approach and land. You can finally see the immensity and vastness of the glacier and it just really takes your breath away.
9:20 - We are finally able to land.
11:07 - Arrive at dog camp.
12:19 - FINALLY! We are on the dog sled and they take off running! Be prepared to laugh!
13:30 - After a brief stop, the dogs take off running again and they really bolt!
14:48 - We do a mid-point stop to meet and play with the dogs. Unfortunately, I am almost out of space on my memory card but at this point, I was able to get quick interview in with mom before it quit.

This park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. Yet, it is also one of the few remaining--of the 2,000 glaciers observed in Alaska, 99% are thinning and retreating.

It's a hardcore eight weeks on the Juneau Icefield for Link TV correspondent Jeff Barbee, battling crevasses and limited visibility every step of the way. Barbee joins the 2013 Juneau Icefield Research Program, which since 1946 has brought teams of scientists and students together to study glaciers in a 1,700 square mile area between Juneau and Skagway Alaska and Atlin, British Columbia. He reports on what it takes to keep glacier science up to date.
