Alaska Travel Adventures: Mendenhall Glacier Float Trip in Juneau
Hold on for a safe but exhilarating river-running experience! Put in at the lake at the foot of the spectacular Mendenhall Glacier, and be carried away by the river and views of towering mountains, forests and wildlife. There's a lot of everything in this trip!
Begin with a scenic tour up the Mendenhall Valley. On the shores of Mendenhall Lake, don protective raingear and life jackets, and board your raft. Each holds up to twelve, and is rowed by an experienced guide. Or, if you're looking for a hands-on experience, join a paddle-raft team.
Glide across the iceberg-studded lake, marveling at the 1.5-mile-wide glacier, and set course downstream. The six-mile route combines meandering stretches with Class II and III whitewater. The rapids are perfectly safe, just exciting enough for beginners, and appropriate for all ages. A treat for experienced rafters, too! Encounter river features such as Moon Flats and Pin Ball Alley. Watch for the photographer on shore who snaps your picture, capturing the thrill of your adventure.
Where the river levels out, soak in the views of the riverbank, lush forests, and 7,000-foot mountains above the valley floor. Learn about the natural history of the river. You're likely to see bald eagles, birds nesting in rocky cliffs, black bears, otters and seals, and salmon during spawning season.
At the haul-out, celebrate with an Alaskan-style snack and toast your adventure with a cup of Martha's Mendenhall Madness. You can also purchase an action photo of yourself as a lasting memento of a trip you'll never forget.
Alaska Travel Adventures: Gold Creek Salmon Bake in Juneau
A feast as grand as Alaska itself!
The Gold Creek Salmon Bake is an event that's been grilled to perfection for more than 30 years. Savor an all-you-can-eat adventure, in a unique outdoor environment you'll find nowhere else.
Arrive at a beautiful setting, in lush rain forest alongside a creek, under translucent domes that protect you from the elements, rain or shine. Savor the aroma of wild salmon, grilling slowly over fires of fragrant alder wood. And settle in for a feast for all your senses!
The sumptuous spread has something for everyone. Choose from grilled salmon, Cheechako Chicken, Chilkoot Baked Beans, Tongass Wild-Rice Pilaf, Gold Rush Potatoes and a robust selection of other sides, salads and beverages. Beer and wine are available for purchase, and vegetarians, take note — there's plenty to tempt your palate! Come back for seconds, or thirds, while a local musician sets a festive mood. And, just when you think you've had enough — bring on the blueberry cake for dessert!
After dinner, roast marshmallows over a campfire. Stroll through the forest to lovely Salmon Creek waterfall. View the remains of the Wagner Mine and try your hand at panning for gold. Visit the trading post to purchase a souvenir gold pan or other memento.
There's plenty to do, and shuttle buses run regularly, so your visit can last as long as you like. Don't return until your tastes have been satisfied — and you're filled with great memories!
Alaska Travel Adventures: Glacier View Kayaking in Juneau
Learn to handle a kayak from an expert, then put your new skills to use with an unforgettable seaborne adventure. Glide through the waters native-style, get up-close looks at wildlife and enjoy ever-changing views of the Mendenhall Glacier.
Start with a narrated tour through a historic part of Juneau on your way to North Douglas Island. Don protective raingear, boots and lifejackets, and learn the paddling techniques you'll need to handle your kayak. Then join a friend or new traveling companion in your two-person craft and you're off to explore!
Against a backdrop of forested slopes, nearby peaks and the spectacular Mendenhall, you're on course for an informative and memorable tour of Fritz Cove and Auke Bay. In small groups of six kayaks, you're able to stealthily approach wildlife. Bald eagles and their nests, herons, shorebirds and waterfowl are all common sights. Porpoises and even humpback whales occasionally surface for air. If you're lucky, you might see a humpback's enormous tail fluke. You'll also visit the Mendenhall Wetlands, a protected habitat teeming with more than 140 species of birds, nearly a dozen different mammals and an abundance of marine life.
Along the way, your guide will satisfy your curiosity about local flora and fauna, and explain the history behind landmarks such as Smuggler's Cove. But you'll get a sense for the experience that greeted the Aleut Indians as they traveled these waters two centuries ago.

Catch gold fever and experience what it was like to seek your fortune during Gold Rush days! Learn to pan for gold (and keep all you find!), and discover Juneau's colorful mining heritage for yourself.
Head out with a prospector/guide in authentic 19th-century dress for a historical tour of Juneau including the state capitol. Then, turn up the road to Gold Creek and Last Chance Basin, where Joe Juneau and Richard Harris struck gold in 1880.
In a beautiful, secluded setting near a waterfall alongside Gold Creek — only accessible under our tour's special permit — your prospector shows you how gold panning is done. Then, it's your turn, as you learn how to expertly work the pan with helpful tips and advice. You can choose to pan in the creek, or in the waist-high demonstration trough. Every one of all ages and those with limited mobility can learn how to pan and capture the full gold-rush experience. You're guaranteed to find gold! And, all that glitters is yours to keep.
Around you are remnants of the original buildings of the Alaska-Juneau Mining Company, which at the height of production was the largest operation of its type in the world. You'll learn about the mining techniques that were used, and more about the quest for gold that is so much a part of Alaska's history.
Take home a souvenir Orelove Brothers Gold Claim Certificate, all the gold you find, and an appreciation of what is was like to seek your fortune in the wilds of Alaska more than a century ago.
Alaska Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Alaska.
Alaska is a country situated on the edge of the Arctic and dream destination for wildlife and nature lovers who answer to the call of the wild. A land of bears, glaciers, pioneers and prospectors on the northern tip of the American continent. In Vancouver, Canada’s pearl of the Pacific Ocean, begins an extraordinary journey along the Alexander Archipelago in the Gulf Of Alaska, a charming capital with European flair. In English Bay a giant metal crab guards the planetarium and by aquabus our journey travels across False Creek to Science World with its marvellous glass globe that contains a museum of modern art. Ketchikan is a small town located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and timber but today relies upon tourism. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. In 1880, Joe Juneau, Richard Harris and their Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began. Glacier Bay was completely covered by ice and glaciers around four thousand years ago during the Little Ice Age. The ice melted and the ever-changing glaciers are today situated within the arms of the bay which stretches almost a hundred kilometres to the north. Barrow is the northernmost point of inhabited North America and five hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The living conditions in the arctic wastelands are extremely harsh and most of the year it is bone-chillingly cold. Even today the promise of untamed nature and boundless freedom attracts us to America’s final wilderness. Alaska is full of wild extremes and stark contrasts, a fascinating land of pure adventure!

Alaska Travel Adventures: Rainforest Canoe Adventure and Nature Trail in Ketchikan
The adventure begins with a scenic motorcoach tour to a secluded mountain lake, where you will board Indian-style 37-foot, 20 passenger canoes which are fast, stable, and easy to maneuver. Paddle under the direction of an experienced guide, scan the shore for wildlife and learn the unique natural and Indian history of the Ketchikan area. The lake, part of a lush rain forest, is ideal for canoeing and is surrounded by the Tongass, the largest National Forest in the United States.
Stop ashore for a native-style snack including smoked salmon, clam chowder, rolls with wild berry jams and beverages. A knowledgeable guide will lead a short nature walk highlighting the flora and fauna of the rain forest, including a carnivorous plant, the Sundew, which uses tentacles with an adhesive dew to ensnare small insects. Paddle back to the canoe dock and reboard your motorcoach that returns to the cruise ship pier.
This adventure is a rare opportunity to comfortably explore Southeast Alaska in the manner of its original explorers and early culture.

My dad, a friend from Wyoming and I visit several cool and scenic places, including Mendenhall Glacier, Last Chance Basin, Perseverance Trail, Snowslide Gulch, the former largest mining site in the world, Ebner Falls, Alaska State Museum, Flume Trail, and the town of Juneau itself. This is by far the best tour we had the pleasure of doing in Juneau Alaska. This was one of the stop on the NCL jewel Alaska and we book the helicopter dog sledding. Let me start by saying it was my first time on a helicopter, playing on the snow, and dog sledding. Hence the Title!
I hope you guys enjoy this video and try this tour one day.

DAY 3 - Zip Line in Skagway:
DAY 4 - Water Slides in Glacier Bay:
DAY 5 - Bear in Ketchikan:
We made it to Alaska! The Norwegian Bliss traveled through the Alaskan Inside Passage and arrived in the state's capital Juneau, AK. We spent the morning whale watching before heading off the ship to our scheduled excursion. We signed up for the Glacier Helicopter Ride and Dog Sledding Adventure (Coastal Helicopters / Icefield Expeditions). We took a helicopter ride up to the Mendenhall and Herbert Glaciers where the dog camp was based. We got an introduction to dog sledding and met up with our furry team of Alaskan Huskies. Now what it's like to be dog mushers. We had a blast and finished off the excursion hanging out with the puppies before our helicopter flight back to the airport.
We had a nice dinner after returning to the ship and then headed to the Cavern Club where DT gave a karaoke concert.

In the early 1900's, the swell of gold rush activity
moved alaska's political and economic focus north to
the town of juneau.
Juneau is a busy modern city thrust up against a
15,000 square mile ice capped range of mountains
with water on the other side. In alaska nature dwarfs
Human achievement and yet up against these elemental
forces, the people persist and even thrive. Not only
Do they thrive -- they have fun!
Juneau still has the rollicking energy of those two
miners joe juneau and richard harris who discovered
Gold here in the 1880s. In the 1940's the mines closed
and government replaced mining as the chief occupation,
but juneau never lost that frontier sense of optimism
And excitement. There are, of course, all the modern
buildings that one would expect in a state capitol,
But the real flavor of juneau is that of the old west.
where the sidewalk ends, the undaunted citizens of this
flamboyant town didn't quit. They took their buildings
up the hill. Its not hard to imagine what those days
And nights were like during the peak of the gold boom,
And still today, the alaska hotel with its antique
Furnishings shows what a visitor to this town could
Expect in the way of accommodations back in the days
When gold was king and victoria was queen.
but unlike old western towns of the lower forty-eight,
Juneau has a glacier within walking distance!
The famous mendenhall glacier is receding, and as it does
The land hungry people of juneau follow it with buildings.
because of its geographic limitations, the city of juneau has
trouble finding the space it needs. Ironically, it's
Actually the second largest city in the world! ......
In terms of geographical size,
but one of the smallest in terms of usable space.
it's the capital of the state of alaska but a capital
without room to grow.
in 1974 the people of alaska voted to move the state
Capital to anchorage, but they never voted in the funds
For the move. Today juneau remains the political capital,
But because of its location and its room for growth,
anchorage has become the financial capital of alaska
