Bishkek to Osh, Kyrgyzstan
Osh is Kyrgyzstan’s southern capital, and one of the oldest cities in the country. With a history estimated to stretch back 3000 years, Osh has long been a central city in the Fergana Valley. Osh has also been historically significant in many different eras, from being home to a large bazaar to being the birthplace of Kurmanjan Datka.
It’s hard to confirm exactly how old Osh is, and though artifacts have been found dating to the 5th century BCE, many say that the city is 3000 years old. Legends say that the city was founded by Solomon, or maybe Alexander the Great. No matter what the legends say, Osh has been a crucial point for merchants and traders for millennia. The bazaar, located along the Ak-Bura River, has been in its same location for many centuries.

In medieval times, Osh was an important trading city. Nomads would come from the mountains to sell livestock, and merchants would come from Asia and Europe with caravans of goods. In 1762, Osh became part of the Khanate of Kokand, and was one of the six main trading centers in the khanate.
In 1868, the Khanate of Kokand was annexed to the Russian Empire. Kurmanjan Datka, ruler of the Alai region, near Osh, stayed independent for a while longer, but in 1876, she led a peaceful transition to Russian power. The story of her life was adapted for a 2014 film, and she has been honored with statues around Kyrgyzstan (including one in Osh). Osh expanded under Russian rule, with European-style houses being built.
When borders were drawn to create the modern republics, Osh ended up in southern Kyrgyzstan, near the border with Uzbekistan. The city’s population of around 260,000 people is roughly evenly split between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek. Tensions have flared up occasionally, most notably in 1990 and 2010. Osh has since been calm for a number of years, and is well-loved for its distinct character and delicious plov.

Trekking in the Alay Mountains - Kyrgyzstan (Truly Nomadic Land Trek)
Having been all over Central Asia for the last 4 years, it's no secret that I love hiking in Kyrgyzstan! So on my most recent visit I was desperate to head south to the Alay Mountains, and check out the brand new 5-day Truly Nomadic Land trek.
This amazing 64km trek goes through some of the best landscapes in Southern Kyrgyzstan, and I couldn't believe just how beautiful it was. I hiked on my own with a guide and a porter, stayed with nomadic families in their yurt camps, met lots of friendly shepherds and climbed to the top of spectacular mountain passes.
Hiking in the Alay Mountains on the Truly Nomadic Land trek was a fantastic experience, even if it was a little challenging for me. The weather didn't always cooperate and the mountain passes were quite difficult, but it was so worth it to learn more about the Kyrgyz nomads' way of life, culture, and of course enjoy the mountain scenery!
If you're looking for a unique adventure and are keen to go trekking in Kyrgyzstan, the Alay Mountains are the place to be! I hope you like my hiking vlog of what it was like, and are inspired to do it yourself.
Check out my ultimate guide to the Truly Nomadic Land trek in Kyrgyzstan here:

From the Kyzylart Pass to Sary-Mogol - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
At the top of the Kyzylart Pass at 4280 m above sea level, we leave Tajikistan and enter Kyrgyzstan. We have already left the border control behind us. We are on the way from Kara Kul, a lake in eastern Tajikistan to Osh in Kyrgyzstan. But before that, we want to explore the Base Camp at Mount Lenin. So we have planned an overnight stay in Sary-Mogol.
The road from Kara Kul to the Kyzylart Pass runs through a high valley and rises relatively flat. But in the north, the road winds all the more steeply to the valley. Only when the road turns into the valley of the Atjaylo it becomes better and rather flat. Until then it is a piste of stones and clay.
There are no bridges, so the driver has to drive through the small creeks. Here, the Pamir Highway is less frequented, as most trucks go directly from China via the Kulma Pass to Murghob and continue from there to Chorugh.
We cross the Trans-Alay Range with its mighty mountains, over 7000 m high. The more the valley widens, the better we see the Trans-Alay Range, and the mightier the mountains appear.
The meadows are becoming increasingly dark green. You see scattered yurts and in between many horses and goat herds. Children have stretched a string across the street and demand toll to pass. Our driver gives them some dried apricots, whereupon they happily open the road.
From a distance, we see two spherical buildings near Sary-Tash. It is a well-known monitoring and listening post of the Soviets. At that time, the fear towards the Chinese was big. Today it serves as a training center.
Sary-Tash lies at a crossroads between the Pamir Highway from Morghab to Osh and the West-East connection from Dushanbe to China through the Alay Valley with the Kyzyl-Suu River. This river, with its rust-brown color, meanders through the wide valley.
The village offers some overnight accommodations, small restaurants, and a gas station. A garrison of Tajik border guards in Sary-Tash has the task to stem the drug traffic.
We continue towards the west and reach Sary-Mogol after about 35 km. The place is famous for its coal mines, which supply the region with fuel. On the way to Osh, we will later see many trucks transporting the coal.

From Sary Mogol to Osh - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
Our destination today is Osh. Osh is the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan. Bright sunshine also accompanies us on this day too.
From Sary-Mogol we drive to Sarytash. From here the road winds the Alay Mountains southwards up the mountain to the Taldyk Pass. The pass is at an altitude of 3615 m. At the top, we have a phenomenal view of the serpentines which lead us back into the valley.
Our driver, who is actually a Chinese teacher, meets his brother-in-law by chance. He is on his way to Murghab, where he works as a doctor. The two have not seen themselves for three months.
Down in the valley, some yurts are along the road. Afterward, we pass small villages. As we pass a small forest we realize that we have not seen a tree for almost 10 days.
The rocky formations which the water of the Kurshab river has washed into the mountain slopes take partly bizarre forms. Nature illustrates here which strengths the water can develop, even if we hardly see any water around this season. The rocks appear in most different color shadings up to a dark red.
In Gulcha, a mountain town with nearly 12000 inhabitants, our driver stops for refueling. We use the time to explore the nearer surroundings. A monument with a horseman, accompanied by two tigers, adorns the traffic island at a larger crossroad.
Across the street, the noise of children and a street art painting attracts us. As I get closer I see that it is a well from where the children have to bring water. We drive through the town and pass an adventurous pedestrian bridge across the river.
At the end of the town, we turn westwards. The road winds again from 1550 m above sea level to an altitude of 2400 m. It is the Chirchik Pass. As we get around the last corner before the pass, about 10 horses and cows stand in the middle of the road.
We watch them for a while, surprised that these animals do not move an inch from the spot, even if a truck passes in a distance of about two meters.
A modern monument towers above the Chirchik Pass. From here we have a remarkable view of the valleys. In the direction of Osh, some yurts and huts are scattered over the slopes. Again, we are watching children working. A boy collects the excrement of the grazing animals as a fuel for heating and a little girl is on the move with canisters to get water.

Osh | Kyrgyzstan | Ош, O'sh, Fergana Valley , capital of the south, Great Silk Road
Osh (Kyrgyz: Ош, Russian: Ош, Uzbek: O'sh) is the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan, located in the Fergana Valley in the south of the country and often referred to as the capital of the south. It is the oldest city in the country (estimated to be more than 3000 years old), and has served as the administrative center of Osh Region since 1939. The city has an ethnically mixed population of about 255,800 in 2012, comprising Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Russians, Tajiks, and other smaller ethnic groups. At least 24 people are feared dead after a massive landslide buried a village in southern Kyrgyzstan, according to government sources of the central Asian republic.
The landslide happened at around 7am (local time) on Saturday when about one million cubic metres of mud buried the village of Ayu, in the Uzgen district, Osh region, which buried seven inhabited houses.
Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambayev has instructed to take all necessary measures to remedy the disaster and assist the victims' families, according to a statement released by the presidential spokesman.
However, the spokesman for the Ministry of Emergency Situations also pointed out that last March the inhabitants of 11 houses in Ayu were warned they had to abandon their homes and move to safer ground due to the elevated risk of landslide.
Four of the 11 forewarned families did heed the authorities' advice and abandoned their homes which also ended buried under the landslide. The landslide, caused by heavy rains, destroyed eleven houses in the village in Uzgen district of Osh region at around 0120 GMT on Saturday. The exact number of people hit by the landslide was unclear, the Emergency Ministry said.

The city's industrial base, established during the Soviet period, largely collapsed after the break-up of the Soviet Union and has recently only started to revive. The proximity of the Uzbekistan border, which cuts through historically linked territories and settlements, deprives Osh of much of its former hinterland and presents a serious obstacle to trade and economic development. Daily flights from Osh Airport link Osh - and hence the southern part of Kyrgyzstan - to Bishkek and the north. Osh has two railway stations and a railway connection to Andijan in neighbouring Uzbekistan, but no passenger traffic and only sporadic freight traffic. Most transport is by road. The recent upgrading of the long and arduous road through the mountains to Bishkek has greatly improved communications.
The city has several monuments, including one to the southern Kyrgyz queen Kurmanjan Datka and one of the few remaining statues of Lenin. A Russian Orthodox church, reopened after the rk of antiquity known as the “Stone Tower”, which Claudius Ptolemy wrote about in his famous work Geography (Ptolemy). It marked the midpoint on the ancient Silk Road, the overland trade route taken by caravans between Europe and Asia.[3] The National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex Sulayman is carved in the mountain, containing a collection of archaeological, geological and historical finds and information about local flora and fauna.
Its first western-style supermarket Narodnyj opened in March 2007.[4]
Administration[edit]
Osh city (Ош шаар - Osh shaar) covers 182.5 square kilometres (70.5 square miles)[1] and like the capital city Bishkek, is administered separately and not part of any region, although it is the seat of Osh Region. Besides the city proper, 11 villages are administered by the city: Almalyk, Arek, Gulbaar-Toloykon, Japalak, Kengesh, Kerme-Too, Orke, Pyatiletka, Teeke and parts of Ozgur and Tölöykön.[1]

Kyrgyzstan, Osh, Kyrgyz-Ata
The natural Park of Kyrgyz-ATA is located in the basin of the river of the same name, flowing from the Northern slope of the ridge Kichik-Alai, at a distance of about 40 km from Osh on the road leading to the village of Iski-Naukat. From all sides the valley is surrounded by the amazing beauty of the pointed, covered with snow-capped peaks of a spur of Kichik-Alay. The rocks are composed of limestone with outputs of colored marble.
In the upper part of the zone allocated to the tract Mazar, Kaldi and the city in which are collected together all the beauty of nature. In the upper Reaches of the Kyrgyz-ATA is Pervomaisky pass and some others leading to the gorge Kichik-Alai East.
From the upper part you can see a lot of spire-like and tower-like peaks, most of which do not have common names. The bed of the river completely changes character: a narrow, deep canyons give way to wide sections of the most picturesque mountain tracts, lush juniper forests.
