The Memorial's Mystery Wedding
Title number : F11530
Title : 2/4 Battalion AIF filmed by John Bryden Wells
Identity of mystery newly weds solved!
This film shows the Service wedding between Captain Ethne Doris Swanson, 2/1 Australian General Hospital (2/1 AGH) and Lieutenant Henry Gustaf Sundstrom. The wedding reception takes place at the 2/1 AGH Sisters Mess.
This 8mm film was shot by the late John Bryden Wells, a 2nd Lieutenant of the 2/4 AIF at the time of filming. Stationed in Egypt during WW2, Wells documented the time he spent there, including Alexandrian street and market scenes, the El Montaza Royal Gardens in Alexandria, the Gezira Sporting Club at Cairo and life in the Australian camp in the Western Desert.
In the clip shown here we see scenes from a Service wedding between a nursing sister of the of the 2/1 Australian General Hospital (2/1 AGH) and an Australian lieutenant. Shown entering the camp mess, then emerging as newlyweds in their confetti-covered uniforms, the pair shortly reappear wearing their going away clothes. They step into a motorcar smile into the camera and leave the camp for destinations unknown.
While its known that Wells himself never married, the names of the happy couple are not known to the Memorial. If you recognise them or anyone in the wedding party, please let us know!
Egypt - Remembrance service for Anwar Sadat
T/I: 10:40:09
Indonesian President Suharto laid a wreath at the tomb of Egypt's assassinated leader Anwar Sadat in a tranquil ceremony on Thursday (14/05) that contrasted with the rioting and looting gripping his own country. Suharto, who is due to return home on Thursday afternoon, also laid a wreath at the nearby monument to the Unknown Soldier in a northern Cairo suburb, a symbol of the fallen in Egypt's wars.

Cleopatra | Mission 8 | Pi-yer | The Sea People's Attack
Pi-yer is a brilliant little mission. Concise, compact and filled with challenges. Very difficult and a struggle to get through but from a challenge perspective it is one of my favourites. Most importantly, the mission doesn't drag on past it's early welcome and concludes relatively peacefully. The best kind of mission.

SUMMARY
=======
Alexandria ( or ; Egyptian Arabic: إسكندريه Eskendereyya; Arabic: الإسكندرية al-ʾIskandariyya; Coptic: ⲁⲗⲉⲝⲁⲛⲇⲣⲓⲁ Alexandria or ⲣⲁⲕⲟϯ Rakote) is the second-largest city in Egypt and a major economic centre, extending about 32 km (20 mi) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the north central part of the country. Its low elevation on the Nile delta makes it highly vulnerable to rising sea levels. Alexandria is an important industrial center because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez. Alexandria is also a popular tourist destination.
Alexandria was founded around a small, ancient Egyptian town c. 332 BC by Alexander the Great, king of Macedon and leader of the Greek League of Corinth, during his conquest of the Achaemenid Empire. Alexandria became an important center of Hellenistic civilization and remained the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and Roman and Byzantine Egypt for almost 1,000 years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in AD 641, when a new capital was founded at Fustat (later absorbed into Cairo). Hellenistic Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its Great Library (the largest in the ancient world; now replaced by a modern one); and the Necropolis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Alexandria was at one time the second most powerful city of the ancient Mediterranean region, after Rome. Ongoing maritime archaeology in the harbor of Alexandria, which began in 1994, is revealing details of Alexandria both before the arrival of Alexander, when a city named Rhacotis existed there, and during the Ptolemaic dynasty.
From the late 18th century, Alexandria became a major center of the international shipping industry and one of the most important trading centers in the world, both because it profited from the easy overland connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and the lucrative trade in Egyptian cotton.

Alexandria ( or ; Egyptian Arabic: إسكندريه Eskendereyya; Arabic: الإسكندرية al-ʾIskandariyya; Coptic: ⲁⲗⲉⲝⲁⲛⲇⲣⲓⲁ Alexandria or ⲣⲁⲕⲟϯ Rakote, Greek:Αλεξανδρεία) is the second-largest city in Egypt and a major economic centre, extending about 32 km (20 mi) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the north central part of the country.
Hellenistic Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its Great Library (the largest in the ancient world); and the Necropolis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.
