Iraklia Island...Small Paradise
A tiny island between Naxos and Ios, Iraklia is the perfect place for true relaxation and privacy. Even in summertime, when the neighbouring islands are full of tourists, Iraklia remains secluded and protected from mass tourism. With lovely beaches, hilly landscape and welcoming people, Iraklia island is a paradise. Iraklia has two villages: Panagia, located in the centre of the island, and Agios Georgios, which serves as the main port. Both these villages have traditional architecture.
Iraklia has many beautiful beaches around its coastline. Some of these beaches can be accessed on foot, while others are more remote, so visitors will need to take the excursion boat from the port to go and enjoy some privacy. The most famous and impressive beach on Iraklia is Livadi, a long sandy beach with crystal water on the eastern side of the island.
You can see,
Kastro (castle) of Livadi: These are the remains of a castle of Hellenistic Period (323 b.c-316 b.c.). Also found are the ruins of the temple of Zeus and that of the Goddess of Luck. It was a settlement until 1930
The Bay of Meriha: it is surrounded by cliffs more than a hundred meters high. Birds find natural nests inside the openings in the cliffs.
Papas Hill: from where one can admire the view of all the islands that are around Iraklia. From this point bird-watchers can indulge in their hobby because some rare species of birds can be spotted from here.
The Cave of Agios Ioannis. Its the biggest cave of the Cyclades and one of the best in Greece. Consists of a maze of incredible stalactites, stalagmites, columns and a rare kind of ''cave-milk'' and it takes two and a half hours to explore it. It is situated at a panoramic site with full view of the sea and nearby island.
Alimia beach is located at the south west part of Iraklia and it is a coast of fine sand. Under its transparent green-blue waters a wreck of a German war plane is found which was shot down during the 2nd World War. As such, Alimia beach is the ideal place for snorkeling and underwater explorations.

In Heraklia there are the settlements of Agios Georgios located on the homonymous bay, from which the island was named at times, the settlement of Panagia, the capital of the island and the settlement of Agios Athanasios located in the western part of the island (in recent years it has desolate).
Its three settlements, Agios Athanasios, Agios Georgios and Panagia, constitute an independent community, Iraklia, which belongs to the province of Thira (Santorini). Its inhabitants in 1940 numbered 227 while in 2001 they reached 151. The capital city of Panagia is connected by a 4.5 km long paved road to the port of Ag. George. Another asphalted road also connects Panagia with the 2.5 km Turkopigado beach.
Its arable land once reached (in 1960) about 1,000 acres. So was the production of cereals, tobacco and pulses, as well as cheese, cheese and honey.
The remains of ancient settlements and tombs as well as the ruins of the ancient sanctuaries of the goddess Tychus and Lophitus Zeus are preserved on this islet. Evidence that since 3,000 BC. it had significant development in the wider Cycladic culture. In modern times, many of the island's caves have served as hideouts for pirates and smugglers from time to time, hence the various names of corms. Fortress of Livadi, a Fortress of Historic Times has been located. The island was home to pirates during the Turkish occupation. In 1646 the island was taken over to the then Archbishopric of Sifnos, together with the islands of Amorgos, Polykandros (today Folegandros), Anafi, Nios (today Ios), Mykonos, Serifos, Sikinos and Astypalaia.
It is the property of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Hazoviotissa of Amorgos. With the permission of the Holy Monastery in 1826, the Amorians were allowed to settle the island.
Attractions provided by Iraklia include:
The peak of the Pope, at an altitude of 420 m. It is located in the southern part. From here one can admire the view of all the islands around Heraklion and observe rare bird species.
Livadi Castle: There are ruins of a Hellenistic castle (323 BC - 316 BC). There are also many archaeological finds from the Neolithic era and ruins from the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of the Goddess of Fortune.
The settlement of Agios Athanasios, which is almost abandoned today, however, presents an interesting layout with Cycladic architecture.
The cave of Agios Ioannis with its rich decoration of stalactites and stalagmites. It is the largest cave of the Cyclades with an area of 2000 sq.m. Nearby is a smaller one called the Cyclops Cave. Both are located in the north of the island.

Helldiver WW2 Plane Wreck - Scuba Dive Site
On August 31 1944, pilot William E. Dill and radioman Kenneth W. Jobe, members of patrol bomber squadron VB-4, were conducting dive bombing practice in this Curtiss SB2C-1C Helldiver . During evasive maneuvers following their second steep dive on the target, the entire vertical tail assembly twisted to port, jamming the rudder controls. No longer able to safely control the aircraft, and unable to make the runway at Pu`unēnē, the pilot made a forced water landing approximately 1-2 miles south of the Naval Air Station. Both pilot and radioman were rescued. The wreck was discovered in 2010.

Historic WWII plane discovered 60 years after crash landing
Japanese zeroes were legendary for their role in the attack on Pearl Harbor in World War II. They became even more infamous after becoming the tool for kamikaze suicidal pilots during second world war. This Japanese Zero has a fascinating and mysterious history that has only recently come to light. The wreck of this plane was found in 2004 by a villager, William Nui, who was freediving for sea cucumbers to feed his family. When he saw it, he first thought it was the wreck of a small passenger plane that had been lost several days before after taking off from Hoskins Airport in Papua New Guinea. But when he dove again and inspected it closer, he saw that it was a much older wreck. He informed the local authorities and word spread to the ears of a man named Max Benjamin. Max runs the Walindi resort and dive operation. He dove on the wreck to investigate the mysterious discovery and learn more about it. He found it in remarkable condition, with no signs of combat damage or bullet holes. This suggests that the pilot was not shot down. The throttle lever and pitch control were in a position that suggested that the plane was likely running out of fuel and that the pilot had executed a controlled water landing, probably after becoming lost. Using the serial number of the plane and factual war records, Max learned that the plane had taken off from West New Britain on December 26th 1944, flown by Tomiharu Honda. Records show that planes making such emergency landings after running out of fuel were not uncommon in the Pacific during WWII. Honda was obviously a skilled pilot to conduct a water landing that placed him 50m (150 feet) from shore in an undamaged plane. Although the wreckage of the plane tells us the story of what happened to the pilot that day, what happened to him afterwards remains a mystery. Stories of the local villagers suggest that Honda was helped to the village of Talasea. While this may be true, cannibalism was still practiced in that time and some people believe that he may not have survived long after his landing. His fate remains unknown. This dive site and the history behind the wreck provide scuba divers with a fascinating place to explore. Walindi Resort and the MV FeBrina dive boat make this excursion regularly. The wreck is surprisingly intact, although corals and sponges are slowly taking over and the ocean is claiming the plane as her own. This plane had rested undiscovered at the bottom of the bay for almost 60 years.
