Gwaii Haanas Treasures - Haida Heritage Centre, Skidegate
From the top of their pole, Haida Watchmen who might have been on the lookout for invaders from foreign lands centuries ago are now welcoming visitors to Skidegate. Master harvesters, carvers and navigators, the Haida were true masters of the sea.
A visit at the Haida Heritage Centre in Skidegate is the best way to start seeing the world through the eyes of a very successful nation with great knowledge, elaborate trade networks, rich material culture and a wealth of traditions.
There are as many histories of Canada as there are are First Nations. If anything, the Haida have reclaimed their history in an inspiring way -- one where they are again taking control of their destiny, their resources.
They are developing a tourism industry that is based on sound stewardhip practices.
And quite frankly, the Haida are showing the world a part of Canada that most Canadians know very little about and that most will likely never see. Because, to come here and to experience Haida Gwaii the way it should be experienced requires from visitors that they be prepared to be exposed to a world that has very little to do with what most of us were led to believe Canada was like when we went to school.
My first impression of Haida Gwaii was that of a land inhabited by a people who draw their identity from the place they inhabit with great wisdom.
It seems one of the lessons I learned is that material wealth can play a positive role in how a people grounds itself in the environment which nutured it.
My visit to the Haida Heritage Centre certainly opened my eyes. I'm OK with that. I am just along for the journey... just as long as I learn a little bit more every day from those I share my journey with.

Lyell Island, known also in the Haida language as Athlii Gwaii, is a large island in the Haida Gwaii archipelago on the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. The island is a part of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site and had been the focus of anti-logging demonstrations that led to the Haida protected area and the reserve for a national park.
72 Haida citizens were arrested by the RCMP and charged with Contempt of Court. Also arrested on Lyell Island was a Canadian MP, Svend Robinson. Lyell Island was the focus of protests as its land and surrounding water are the territories of the Haida people, yet were subjected to Canadian territorial and jurisdictional claims.
Additionally.., part of its forests had been a mortuary grove, for those who were infected by the smallpox epidemics that ravaged the Indigenous Peoples of the archipelago in the 18th and 19th Centuries. For the Haida People.., the island was a long-standing border agreed to by the ,Province of BC and local stakeholders seeking to curtail the provincially sanctioned logging. The Provincial Minister of Forest, Tom Waterland announced that logging would shortly commence over the line.
The Haida response was clear that such a move
was not acceptable.
------------------------------------
Haida people have occupied Haida Gwaii since time immemorial. Our traditional territory encompasses parts of southern Alaska, the archipelago of Haida Gwaii and its surrounding waters. Our pre-contact population was in the tens of thousands in several dozen towns dispersed throughout the islands. During the time of contact our population fell to about 600, this was due to introduced disease including measles, typhoid and smallpox. Today, Haida people make up half of the 5000 people living on the islands.
Haida reside throughout the islands but are concentrated in two main centres, Gaw Old Massett at the north end of Graham Island and HlGaagilda Skidegate at the south end. Besides these two communities, there are many 2000 more Haida scattered throughout the world. Vancouver, 770 km south of Haida Gwaii, has a large population as does Kxeen Prince Rupert which is 100 km east across Hecate Strait.
The Haida Nation collectively holds Hereditary and Aboriginal Title and Rights to Haida Territories and the cultural and intellectual property rights of the Haida Nation.
All people of Haida ancestry are citizens of the Haida Nation. Every Haida citizen has the right of access to all Haida Gwaii resources for cultural reasons, and for food or commerce consistent with the Laws of Nature as reflected in the laws of the Haida Nation.

Lyrics:
Xuuaajii ‘laanaas [Grizzly Bear Town, the village of Skedans]
Xuuaajii ‘laanaas
Home of t’iis Kwaanaaya [Home of the Supernatural Being, Many-Ledges]
Place of wild stillness
Whoa ho, wanagan iijiidan [centred place]
The ancients say,
Find your place of peace
Protect the land and sea
Go there and be!
Whoa ho, wanagan iijiidan
Sometimes I want to go back in time!
And sit with nanaay 7aawaay [great-grandmother] in xuuaajii ‘laanas
Oh, but colonization was a hard time!
Decimation, segregation, suppression
Vestiges remain today
Those in sGaana tllGaay [Spirit-Land] whisper,
Anger is victim in disguise
It eats at your soul like cancer
Instead, be
Warriors of light, peace and forgiveness
Xuuaajii ‘laanaas, xuuaajii ‘laanaas
Home of t’iis Kwaanaaya
Place of wild stillness
Whoa ho, wanagan iijiidan
Warriors of Light!
In honour of gid7ahl-Gudsllaay, Susan Williams, nee Young, nee Moody. Nanaay 7aawaay, great-grandmother, song custodian, ancestress of the Skedans Ravens, and centenarian who lived from about 1862-1971. Haawa for nourishing our cultural legacy in the face of colonization.

IsumaTV – Zacharias Kunuk (Igloolik Hamlet, North Baffin Island, Canadian Arctic Archipelago)
About the project
In the Inuit language Isuma means to think or thoughtfulness. IsumaTV (thoughtful media) uses Inuit video art – community-based Inuit-language digital filmmaking – to record our cultural history, preserve our language, create jobs for youth and economic development, strengthen our legal right to be informed and consulted in mining developments on our land and express Inuit identity and point of view in a world globalized by new media technologies. Inuit culture is an Oral Tradition passed down through generations for four millenia by storytelling the knowledge in our heads; we have no libraries. In the past 50 years residential schools, town life and foreign TV disrupted our storytelling tradition as our last elders passed away. Inuit media art recreates oral history and knowledge for present and future generations, keeping Inuit storytelling alive in the 21st century. I was born in a sod house in 1957, never saw a white person until age 9. First I made whalebone carvings, then bought my first video camera in 1981; started Igloolik Isuma Productions with three partners in 1991; made our first feature Atanarjuat The Fast Runner in 2001. In 2008 we launched IsumaTV, the first website just for Inuit and Aboriginal films. In 2012 we built Digital Indigenous Democracy, IsumaTV’s network of local servers to inform and consult Inuit on mining in communities where internet bandwidth is too slow and costly for Youtube or other media websites to work. Today IsumaTV carries 1300 Inuit films and videos, of a total 6000 films and videos in 80 languages worldwide, and brings the social, political and collective power of community-based media to remote communities on the wrong side of the Digital Divide. Next 5 years we hope to expand IsumaTV in Canada and around the world.
IsumaTV started in 2008 in Igloolik Hamlet, north Baffin Island, Canadian arctic; local server network expanded 2012-16 to Arctic Bay, Pond Inlet, Iqaluit, Clyde River, Arviat, Cambridge Bay, Taloyoak, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk, Gjoa Haven, Old Masset and Skidegate (Haida G’wai). Located in physical communities (local servers, TV channels, local video production) and online in cyberspace, 6000 films and videos, in 80 indigenous languages, from 6 continents.

Haida language
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written
language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through
audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio
while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using

SUMMARY
=======
Haida (X̱aat Kíl, X̱aadas Kíl, X̱aayda Kil, Xaad kil,) is the language of the Haida people, spoken in the Haida Gwaii archipelago of the coast of Canada and on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. An endangered language by a book put out by UNESCO, Haida currently has 14 native speakers, though revitalization efforts are underway. At the time of the European arrival at Haida Gwaii in 1774, it is estimated that Haida speakers numbered about 15,000. Epidemics soon led to a drastic reduction in the Haida population, which became limited to three villages: Masset, Skidegate, and Hydaburg. Positive attitudes towards assimilation combined with the ban on speaking Haida in residential schools led to a sharp decline in the use of the Haida language among the Haida people, and today almost all ethnic Haida use English to communicate.
Classification of the Haida language is a matter of controversy, with some linguists placing it in the Na-Dené language family and others arguing that it is a language isolate. Haida itself is split between Northern and Southern dialects, which differ primarily in phonology. The Northern Haida dialects have developed pharyngeal consonants, typologically uncommon sounds which are also found in some of the nearby Salishan and Wakashan languages.
The Haida sound system includes ejective consonants, glottalized sonorants, contrastive vowel length, and phonemic tone. The nature of tone differs between the dialects, and in Alaskan Haida it is primarily a pitch accent system. Syllabic laterals appear in all dialects of Haida, but are only phonemic in Skidegate Haida. Extra vowels which are not present in Haida words occur in nonsense words in Haida songs. There are a number of systems for writing Haida using the Latin alphabet, each of which represents the sounds of Haida differently.
While Haida has nouns and verbs, it does not have adjectives and has few true adpositions. English adjectives translate into verbs in Haida, for example 'láa (to be) good, and English prepositional phrases are usually expressed with Haida relational nouns, for instance Alaskan Haida dítkw 'side facing away from the beach, towards the woods'. Haida verbs are marked for tense, aspect, mood, and evidentiality, and person is marked by pronouns that are cliticized to the verb. Haida also has hundreds of classifiers. Haida has the rare direct-inverse word order type, where both SOV and OSV words orders occur depending on the potency of the subject and object of the verb. Haida also has obligatory possession, where certain types of nouns cannot stand alone and require a possessor.
