From The Geneva Airport to Morzine, France
Morzine, France is located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil (door to the sun), an easy drive or train from Geneva International Airport. Avid skiers need no introduction to this area with over 7 different ski areas on the French side AND 6 ski areas on the Swiss side.
This was our winter choice to snowshoe. When you live in Chicago, there are only two winter options. Fly south or embrace the snow and cold. Embracing is much easier and fun in the European Alps with the giant ski circuses and activities. It's not too late to make winter reservations and the following set of videos will give just a small indication of what to expect.

Morzine: A Guide to the Resort of Morzine
For everything you need to know about Morzine visit
Morzine is one of the towns in the massive Portes du Soleil, a ski area that stretches across thirteen resorts through France and Switzerland.
Morzine was originally a small farming and mining town, the first lift to be installed here was the Pleney cable car in 1934 and since then the town has grown into a full on resort with all the trappings you'd expect whilst still retaining it's traditional French charm.
Morzine sits in the Haute Savoie region of France just over an hour from Geneva airport, making it one of the easiest resorts to reach from the UK.
The town lies on two sides of the Dranse river that flows through the bottom of the valley, the sides of which are adorned with traditionally styled wooden chalets with slate roofs. There are almost no high rise buildings in Morzine and as this helped the town keep it's charm.
There are some excellent Hotels in Morzine like The Farmhouse but most of the accommodation is in self contained, independent chalets. In many cases these are run by families who fell in love with Morzine and never wanted to leave and they offer excellent facilities and service at very competitive rates.
The centre of Morzine is the Tourist Office and from here it's a short walk to the lifts on either side of the valley that will take you up to either Morzine and Les Gets or Avoriaz and the further Portes du Soleil.
As Morzine is still a town rather than just a resort it is possible to drive around but for those without their own transport there is a free bus system that starts and finishes at the foot of Le Pleney but accesses the Prodians, Super Morzine and Ardent lift stations.
Of course no French town would be complete without a bakery and there are several in Morzine, the most popular being the Bonboniere de Tavernier. Here you'll find artisanal chocolates and excellent French pastries and cakes.
Morzine also has some good shops, most of them are here to service the skiers and snowboarders but there are some shops offering shoes, jewellery and clothing as well as gifts and souvenirs.
For skiers and snowboarders there are several big chain stores like Intersport where you can rent and buy equipment as well as smaller in dependant stores like Slopestyle, Attack Attack and the Woods.
The town also has some great bars and restaurants. Bar Robbinson or Robbos as it's locally known is a tiny French café bar with a legendarily strong beer; Mutzig. It's a must for any visitor and always popular with the locals.
For live sport the Dixie Bar just next door has several huge screens and is always packed during the Six Nations Rugby and big Football matches.
Up near the tourist office The Cavern, Crepu and Tibetan Café are always popular especially on a Tuesday night when the Chalet staff have their night off.
For a more civilised affair try the Beanies for cocktails, the Coup de Couer wine bar on the high street or the hipster Micro Brewery the Bec Juane at the top of town.
Between these bars and the late night venues like Opera and Cafe Chaud Morzine has a great apres ski and night life but if fine food rather than beer and music is your idea of a night out then you will not be disappointed with Le Grange, Chaumade or Ferme de Frutiere.
Morzine also has two cinemas and a swimming pool complex as well as it's own ice hockey team; The Penguins. Added to this options to go paragliding, husky dog sledging and snow mobiling and it is a great winter destination even for those who don't ski.
Morzine is a very picturesque town. It feels like a French town rather than a ski resort but in the last few years it has installed new lifts and sports facilities and new bars and restaurants have begun emerging meaning that it can hold it's own against many of the big name resorts in the Alps.
With it's charm and quality as well as it's location, just an hour from an airport and in the middle of one of the biggest ski areas in the world Morzine really is one of our favourite winter destinations.

The Ski/Snowboard Runs in the Portes du Soleil, Morzine, France - Runs in All Directions
Just one look at the abbreviated ski map in the Portes du Soleil ski circus will overwhelm you. I, personally, spent hours each night trying to decide what sector to try. Whether you snowboard and want to experience one of the many snowparks, downhill ski, Alpine Tour (a form of skiing that athletes use to ascend a mountain using specialized bindings and skins on the bottom to keep from sliding down), or snowshoe, this area has it all.
If you do Alpine tour or snowshoe, remember to keep to the side of the runs (pistes). Downhill skiers always have the right of way.

A Video Guide to the Resort of Avoriaz
For more on Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil visit
Avoriaz is a purpose built ski resort but unlike so many of the resorts that sprang up in the 60's and 70's it isn't home to unsightly concrete monoliths but instead wooden clad apartments and chalets that sympathetically blend into the surrounding mountains.
Much of the credit for Avoriaz has been given to the 1960 Winter Olympic Gold medal winner Jean Vaurnet. Vaurnet had grown up in Morzine and after his success at the Olympics in Squaw Valley he was asked to help with the development of the ski area that surrounded his home town.
One of the first buildings in Avoriaz was the Dromonts Hotel which was built in 1966 and it's design, based on the idea that there are no right angles in nature set the template for the rest of Avoriaz. The resort grew and in 2003 it was awarded a prize by the French Minister of Culture for being one of the great heritage achievements of the 20th Century.
Today Avoriaz sits high on the cliffs above Morzine, just one and a half hours from Geneva Airport. and was voted best family resort and snowiest resort in France in 2013.
The town is completely pedestrianised and only service vehicles are allowed to drive through the resort powdered by an engine, everyone else must make their way around either on foot, ski or in a horse drawn sleighs.
All cars must be parked outside the resort and most transfers to Avoriaz stop at the foot of Le Prodains and visitors make the final ascent to the resort by cable car.
The centre of the resort is a gently sloping plateaux that is home to the excellent Village des Enfants Nursery slope. A self contained ski are built for children where kids as young as three can learn to ski in safety. This is the heart of the resort and it is surrounded by a variety of mini neigbourhoods or sectors; Amara, Falaise, Dromonts, ruches, Crozats and Festival
Avoriaz is a true ski-in-ski-out resort and most of the accommodation in Avoriaz is in apartments or apart-hotels. These apart-hotels are popular in France and are run by the big holiday companies like Pierre & Vacances and Maeva. They combine the benefits of renting a self contained apartment, complete with living area and kitchen with the facilities you would find in a hotel.
In the last few years Avoriaz has expanded with the new upmarket apartments and apart hotels being built. Now one of the best options is the L'Amara Complex. This boasts luxury apartments with relaxation and sports facilities all under one roof. The Residence Saskia Falaise is perched right on the edge of the cliffs of Avoriaz and the balconies here offer amazing sunsets.
Avoriaz has a good apres ski scene and as the town is small and pedestrianised it is easy to wander from bar to bar. Most of the bars are down at the Portes du Soleil building. Here you'll find the Globe Trotters and Shooters Bar which are particularly good at apres ski, especially when the Dutch and Swedish are in town.
There are some good bars down in the Falaise sector too like the Chapka and La Falaise.
Avoriaz doesn't have a wide range of restaurants, most of the places here are Savoy and and offer the mountain classics like tartiflette, fondue and raclette.
Through the centre of town there are slope side restaurants that have terraces on the Route de Crozats outside the Tourist Office. Here there are some great places to enjoy a lunch time salad in the sun and there are also some crepe stand if you prefer a mid-day snack without having to stop and sit down.
As you would expect most of the shops in Avoriaz cater to the ski and snowboard market and for ski rental and boot fitting there are two Intersports in the Place de Ruches and Les Fontaines Blanches where you can order your equipment online and collect it in store.
Although the shops in Avoriaz are a little limited the resort is home to an excellent aqua centre; Aquariaz. This is the water-sports centre in on the edge of the Village des Enfants in Avoriaz and it is home to river rapids, slides, climbing walls and pools. The whole complex has a tropical jungle theme and is a perfect apres ski destination for children.
Avoriaz also has it's own bowling alley and cinema as well as fitness studios and squash courts.
Unlike many of the purpose-built ski resorts that were built in the Alps in the 1960's Avoriaz is quite charming and as the years have passed it's place at the centre of the Portes du Soleil has only made it more attractive.
It's charm may have initially been engineered but over the years it has become a genuine part of life and the horse and cart taxis and Hobbit style chalets are now a day to day sight for people who live here. This combined with true ski in ski out accommodation and safe child-friendly surroundings, ease of access, and excellent skiing have made it one of the best family resorts in France.
