Catholic holiday of All Saints in Poland
People go to cemetaries in Wrsaw to celebrate their dead for Catholic holiday of All Saints
All Saints’ Day (Wszystkich Swietych) in Warsaw
Today is All Saints’ Day (Wszystkich Swietych) which is an annual national holiday held on 1st November in Poland to commemorate those no longer with the family. It is more commonly known as the Day of the Dead - people remember family members, friends and famous people who passed away on this day.
Thousands of Poles travel to their families to celebrate this day together. They visit with their whole families to cementeries, visiting all the family graves and lay candles, wreths and flowers on them.
The candles that are placed on the graves are made in a way that they burn for many hours. It is believed that candles help the gone souls to find their way in the darkness after death so you should always put at least one candle for each person in the grave. The flowers mostly associated with Day of the Dead in Poland is chrysanthemum which is grown in a way it is unnaturally huge with many, many petals.
Even the most abandoned and destroyed graves are lightened with candles on this day – people when visiting cementery buy more candles than they need just to place some on forgotten and empty graves.
It is also common for most of the people participate in church services which are held throughout the city today.

About 93 percent of Poles declare themselves to be Catholics. But
even in Poland is the number of church service attendees falling. By
2016, the figure had dropped to 36.7 percent. Despite the fall, the
Sunday mass remains for many Poles a very important part of life.

All Saints' Day is also known as All Hallows Tide, All-Hallomas, or All Hallows' Day. Special church services are held to commemorate the saints in various towns and cities in Poland. Many people in Poland lay flowers and candles on the graves of deceased family members and friends in cemeteries. This tradition continues through to All Souls’ Day (Dzien Zaduszny or Zaduszki), which is on November 2. All Saints’ Day is an official public holiday in Poland, so schools, banks, government offices and most private businesses are closed. There is a trade prohibition on public holidays in Poland. People intending to travel via public transport during public holidays must check with the public transit authorities on any changes to time schedules. The candles that are laid on graves are especially made so they can burn for many hours. It is believed that these candles help the departed souls find their way through the darkness. It's also celebrated in many areas of the United States, especially where there are large Roman Catholic populations.

The five newest Saints in the Catholic Church
One of the more prominent new saints is Father Damien, a Belgian priest who dedicated his life to helping lepers in Hawaii, living among them and eventually dying of leprosy himself.
Matthew Bunson
Author, St. Damien of Molokai
This Belgian priest living in Hawaii became bigger than both Belgium and Hawaii, justifiably celebrated by both. But by the time of that immense suffering that he underwent in Molokai he had become a truly international figure.
The missionary spirit in him would shape the mold of his service to others. Damien prayed to be sent abroad. His prayers were finally answered in the form of a missionary trip to Hawaii to 1864, the same year he was ordained priest.
Another European, Rafael Arnaiz Baron, known also as Brother Rafael, was also given a place on the altars. He was born in Spain in 1911 and died at the age of 27 as an oblate of the Trappists of Saint Isidore de Dueñas
He left his studies behind in 1934 to become a monk, something he did for only a few years because of the strong diabetes he suffered. He had an affinity for the Eucharist, the Virgin and Gods providence over history.
Another Spaniard, Francis Coll was also canonized. He was a Dominican priest who the pope described as one eagerly dedicated to proclaim the Gospel.
Francis was conscious of the ignorance surrounding religion which is why he founded the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary who dedicated themselves to educating girls, a group Francis considered the pillar of society.
Padre Vito Tomás Gómez
Postulador Francisco Coll y Guitart
He discovered that women have a privileged role in the construction of society and that this role couldnt be well carried out without formation, schools for girls and an education that Francis understood as the best.
Blessed Archbishop Zygmunt Szsczęsny Felińsk was also named saint. He founded the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the family of Mary and was Archbishop of Warsaw.
Archbishop Felinsk defended his fellow Poles who were pushing back against Russian annexation in the latter part of the 19th century. He died in exile and would never see Poland again.
Teresa Antonietta Fracek
Postulator
During the last years of his life he was Archbishop of Tarso a Dzwiniaczka which was under Austrian rule. His biographers say he did a remarkable amount of priestly, educational and social work.
The last new saint, Marie de la Croix Jugan, comes from France. She founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor, and once took an elderly blind woman she found on the street into her home.
Sr. Julie Horesman
Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor
She didnt have the intention of doing anything big, she was just doing an act of charity for one person she knew and knew need her help.
Five exceptional figures celebrated in St. Peters Square, recognized for their work in their service to others and to God.

Pope Francis on All Saints' Day: Live for heaven, not the world
If a Christian wants to reach heaven, he or she should ask themselves if they are living for the pleasures of the world, or if they are striving after holiness with all their strength, Pope Francis said on the feast of All Saints.
“Let us ask ourselves what side we are on: that of heaven or that of the earth? Do we live for the Lord or for ourselves, for eternal happiness or for some fulfillment now?” the pope said Nov. 1.
“Let us ask ourselves: do we really want holiness?” he continued. “Or do we content ourselves with being Christians without disgrace and without praise, who believe in God and esteem others but without going too far?”
“In short, either holiness or nothing!” he said.
The pope led the Angelus from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square in honor of the feast day. In his message before the prayer, he said it is good for Catholics to let themselves be encouraged by the saints, who did not live their lives by “half measures.”
In heaven, the saints “cheer” for those on earth when they seem them “choose God, humility, meekness, mercy, purity,” he said. The saints “understand us, they love us, they what our true good is, they help us, and they wait for us. They are happy, and they want us to be happy with them in paradise.”
He noted that among the saints are also those who may not be known to us, or who are not on the Church’s liturgical calendar, but are nevertheless with God in heaven. And they are all one’s brothers and sisters – making the feast of All Saints, “a family party,” he said.
Pope Francis recalled a significant point in the Mass, when the “Sanctus,” or “Holy, Holy, Holy,” is recited or sung. “It is a hymn – that the Bible says – comes from heaven,” he said.
When singing the “Sanctus” at Mass, Catholics “not only think of the saints, but we do what they do [in heaven]: at that moment, in the Mass, we are united with them more than ever.”
The saints encourage people to follow the Beatitudes, which are “the path of happiness,” he said. He acknowledged that this is not always easy, especially because the world says, blessed are the rich and the arrogant, not “blessed are the poor in spirit” or “blessed are the meek.”
But as the day’s first reading from the book of Revelation says, the saints have “palm branches in their hands,” which is a symbol of victory, the pope said, adding that the saints “have won them, not the world, and they exhort us to choose their part, that of God who is holy.”
Today Christians are called to hear and to put the Beatitudes into practice, Francis said. Winning the victory of heaven is not always about doing extraordinary things but is “about following this path every day… in the family, at home.”
“Today we glimpse our future and celebrate what we were born for: we were born to never die again, we were born to enjoy the happiness of God!” he said. “May the Holy Mother of God, Queen of the saints, help us to firmly walk the path of holiness.”
