Civil War Battle of Allatoona Pass near Cartersville, Georgia Reenactment 10/4/2014
This Civil War Reenactment clip was made on 10/4/2014 during an Allatoona Pass Nighttime Guided Tour. The occaision was the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Allatoona Pass that took place after the fall of Atlanta in September 1864. With no city to defend, the Confederate Army retreated from Atlanta and began a new tactic of attacking Federal supply lines to the North. On 10/4/1864, Confederate Major General Samuel French's Division of 3,276 men was ordered to march north from Big Shanty and attach the Federal Garrison of 976 troops defending the railroad cut at Allatoona. After an all-night march, French's troops surrounded this area and attached on the morning of 10/5/1864 but unknown to French, Federal reinforcements arrived only hours before the battle on a train from Rome containing General John Course and 2,025 addiditional troops many of whom were armed with Henry Repeating rifles giving the Yankess a decisive advantage in firepower. After hours of fighting and the near-cature of the Federal position, French withdrew his troops following warnings that his troops might be cut off from the main Confederate army. In just a few hours of battle, 1,603 men from both sides were killed, wounded, or missing. The Union casualty rate was 35% vrs 27% for the Confederates ranking this battle as one of the bloodiest of the Civil War. This battle was considered to be a draw.

Via civilwartours.com: The Battle of Allatoona Pass was a small but vicious battle fought in 1864 in Georgia between the end of the Atlanta Campaign and the beginning of Sherman’s March to the Sea. During that time Confederate General John B. Hood attempted to disrupt the supply lines of the victorious armies under Union General William T. Sherman stationed in Atlanta. On October 5th the Confederate division under Major General Samuel G. French attempted to overrun the Union garrison and seize the strategic railroad cut located at Allatoona Pass. Despite the participants numbering only about 5,000 soldiers total, the casualty rate was very high with the Confederates suffering 27% and the Union 35% casualties each.
Today the battlefield is remarkably preserved. The forts and most of the outer works are on US Corps of Engineers property, was improved during the past decade by the Etowah Valley Historical Society (EVHS), and is now maintained by Red Top Mountain State Park. The park is easily accessible all year round and can easily be viewed in one day, including forays off the normal paths and into the woods to obscure trenches and avenues of attack.

Red Top Mountain State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in the northwestern part of the state, on the northwestern edge of metro Atlanta, in southeastern Bartow County near Cartersville. Named for iron-rich Red Top Mountain,[1] the park covers 1,776 acres on a peninsula jutting north into Lake Allatoona, formed on the park's north and east sides by the Etowah River arm and on the west by Allatoona Creek arm.
During the 1864 Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War, the Battle of Allatoona Pass was fought on a battlefield near the park. (The battle of Allatoona Pass National Historical Registry Marker is across Lake Allatoona on the south side, off Allatoona Road, or the Emerson exit off Interstate 75.) The park's main popularity however comes from being near Atlanta, and just off Interstate 75. It is one of the most-visited parks in the state.
