Das Hamburger Rathaus ist der Sitz der Bürgerschaft (Parlament) und des Senats (Landesregierung) der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg. Das architektonisch prachtvolle Gebäude an der Binnenalster wurde zwischen den Jahren 1886 und 1897 durch verschiedene Baumeister im historistischen Stil der Neorenaissance errichtet. Der Turm hat eine Höhe von 112 Metern und ist damit eine markante Landmarke im Hamburger Stadtbild. Budynek ratusza (niem. Hamburger Rathaus) – siedziba zarządu miasta w Hamburgu. Hamburski ratusz (oddany do użytku w 1897) jest jednym z przykładów historyzmu w Niemczech. Budynek zbudowany jest głównie z piaskowca. Fasada jest szeroka na 111 m, wieża umiejscowiona centralnie liczy 112 metrów wysokości. Dach ma miedziane pokrycie. The Hamburg Rathaus is the Rathaus—the city hall or town hall—of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany. It is the seat of the government of Hamburg and as such, the seat of one of Germany's 16 state parliaments. The Rathaus is located in the Altstadt quarter in the city center, at the Rathausmarkt square, and near the lake Binnenalster and the central station. Constructed from 1886 to 1897, the city hall still houses its original governmental functions with the office of the First Mayor of Hamburg and the meeting rooms for Hamburg's parliament and senate (the city's executive). On the outside the architectural style is neo-renaissance, which is abandoned inside for several historical elements. It is one of the few completely preserved buildings of historicism in Hamburg. Built in a period of wealth and prosperity, in which the Kingdom of Prussia and its confederates defeated France in the Franco-German War and the German Empire was formed, the look of the new Hamburg Rathaus was intended to express this wealth and also the independence of the State of Hamburg and Hamburg's republican traditions. The city hall has a total area of 17,000 m2 (182,986 sq ft), not including the restaurant Ratsweinkeller, now called Parlament, of 2,900 m2 (31,215 sq ft). The tower is 112 metres (367 ft) high with 436 steps. It is a common misconception that Hamburg Rathaus has more rooms than Buckingham Palace (647 vs. 775), on a building area of 5,400 m2 (58,125 sq ft).

Today we explore the Hanseatic City of Hamburg on a sunny winter day. As the second largest city of Germany behind Berlin, Hamburg is home to Europe's third-largest port and has a nice city centre.
We walk from near the central station to the inner city and head towards the impressive Town Hall. From there we walk around several central streets and sights like Alsterarkaden. We end the walk at the Elbpromenaden with a view to the tourist ferries and Elbphilharmonie.

Rathausmarkt (lit. City Hall Marketplace) is the central square of Hamburg, Germany, located in the Altstadt (old town) quarter right in front of the Hamburg Rathaus. Framed by shopping arcades of Alsterarkaden at Alsterfleet, there are many events taking place here, amongst them open air cinema in summer, the Stuttgarter Weindorf (Stuttgart wine village), the music festival of Rockspektakel, and the Christmas market in December.
The Rathausmarkt was built after the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842, which destroyed also the old city hall near the bridge of Trostbrücke and the buildings near the new city hall, with the exception of the building of Hamburg Stock Exchange. Shortly before the fire, the old St. John's monastery and also the old church of St. John, located on the southern end of the square, which were situated in the area of today's Rathausmarkt, had been demolished. The square was created pursuing a plan and designed after the model of Piazza San Marco in Venice, which is also opening to the waterfront. The new city hall was completed in 1897.
In 1933, the Rathausmarkt had been renamed to Adolf-Hitler-Platz (Adolf Hitler square), as many squares and streets in Germany at that time. It was renamed after the end of World War II in 1945. Until the 1970s the square was a transport hub for the Trams in Hamburg. After tram operation had ceased in 1978, the square was fully renovated and surfaced with red granite until 1982 under the aegis of mayor Hans-Ulrich Klose, wherefore it was jokingly dubbed Red Square.
The former monument for William I, which had been erected on the square in 1903, was removed in 1930. The remaining parts can be found at Holstenwall/Sievekingplatz today. The two large flagpoles are remnants of this ensemble. Also today, the Heinrich Heine Monument, made by Waldemar Otto, can be found on the square. Hannes Wader wrote a song about in 1989.

Der 1911 eröffnete St. Pauli-Elbtunnel – auch Alter Elbtunnel genannt .Der Tunnel unterquert die Norderelbe auf einer Länge von 426,5 Metern und verbindet mit zwei Tunnelröhren die nördliche Hafenkante bei den St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken (Nordeingang) mit der Elbinsel Steinwerder (Südeingang). Er wird als öffentlicher Verkehrsweg sowohl von Fußgängern und Radfahrern als auch eingeschränkt von Kraftfahrzeugen genutzt. Er galt bei seiner Eröffnung als technische Sensation, steht seit 2003 unter Denkmalschutz und wurde am 7. September 2011 von der Bundesingenieurkammer und der Hamburgischen Ingenieurkammer-Bau mit dem Titel Historisches Wahrzeichen der Ingenieurbaukunst in Deutschland ausgezeichnet. Die Ehrentafel wurde am nördlichen Eingang (St. Pauli) angebracht.
