Mercado Municipal De Altea - The Municipal Market of Altea Spain
The Beautiful Town of Altea Nr Benidorm Costa Blanca Spain (Tour)
Altea.
The typically Spanish 'white' town of Altea is approximately 12 kilometres north of Benidorm. We say 'white' because it is a beautiful town built on a hillside overlooking the Mediterranean sea, with its white houses shimmering in the sunshine on tiny streets leading up to its magnificent blue domed church which dominates the town.
It really is a picture postcard version of Spain and one that is so far removed from the skyscrapers of Benidorm; it is difficult to believe that they are both neighbours.
Once outside the imposing church you will discover the hub of 'central Altea'. This glorious piazza comes to life each evening and offers a multitude of bars and upscale restaurants. There are also located here some great viewing spots, the views are breath taking, taking in the town and the Mediterranean sea, mountains and incredible vistas right over to Benidorm! Definitely a Kodak moment!
All along the streets leading up to the church you will also find many high end boutiques and artisan shops, specialising in arts and crafts, jewellery and designer clothing. Altea market takes place each Tuesday.
Altea also possesses a beautiful sea front promenade which has been landscaped with hundreds of palm trees offering some much needed shade. Here you will also discover a huge selection of cafés and restaurants, why not stop and enjoy a café con leche or lunch. The selection is numerous and all of them offer dining alfresco.
Altea port is a busy working port and each day many fishing boats can be seen departing and returning, you may also wish to browse around some of the beautiful boats which harbour here.
Altea makes for a perfect day out from Benidorm and is easily reached by public transport. From the centre of Benidorm simply hop on the number 10 bus. This service runs every 15 minutes and the journey time is approximately 35 minutes. The tram also whisks you effortlessly from Benidorm train station to Altea station in approx' 20 minutes. If you have hired a car then it is a simple 15 minute drive from Benidorm centre. Take the N332 (national road) direction north (Valencia) and park! Check at your hotels reception desk, they most likely will have details of organised day trips.
For a more traditional taste of Spain Altea is the place to go!

We spent the day here with friends on their boat and then cycled around the town and surrounding areas on our electric bikes.
This really is a special place and we were lucky enough to live here for a few years. Now we are travelling in our Motorhome we always make the effort to pass through Altea to catch up with old friends

This maze of cobbled narrow and crooked streets with glimpses of the bay is one of the better features of the town. Other sights include the church of La Mare de Déu del Consol (Our Lady of Solace), easily identifiable by its picturesque blue and white domes, tiled with glazed ceramics. There are numerous quaint restaurants near the church, some with a view over the Mediterranean. Note that, if visiting by car, you will need to park several blocks away from the church area as the immediately surrounding area is either off limits to cars and/or the streets are so narrow and steep (or have stairs) that cars cannot pass

About Altea, Costa Blanca, Spain: Altea is a city and municipality located in the province of Alicante, Spain, north of Alicante on the section of Mediterranean coast called the Costa Blanca.
At present, the economy of Altea is based on tourism, which started to grow in the 1950s because of its good weather, beaches and the labyrinthine streets with whitewashed house-fronts that characterize the town. Altea is protected on the north by the bluffs of the Serra de Bèrnia, creating an especially mild microclimate. Its seafront esplanade is planted with palms.
History:
The Iberian coastal settlements at the mouth of the Algar river in the wide Bay of Altea were later joined by a Greek marketplace, named Althaia.
During the Moorish domination the land around Altea belonged to the Taifa of Dénia until it was recaptured by the Christians in 1244 under James I of Aragon. The town was quickly fortified, and walls were erected to enclose what is now known as the old town from outsiders.

Douzelage:
Altea is a founding member of the Douzelage, a unique town twinning association of 24 towns across the European Union. This active town twinning began in 1991 and there are regular events, such as a produce market from each of the other countries and festivals. Discussions regarding membership are also in hand with three further towns (Agros in Cyprus, Škofja Loka in Slovenia, and Tryavna in Bulgaria).
