Australians Try German Beer | German Beer Tour Hamburg
Today we are in Hamburg, Germany and are spending the day doing the most stereotypical German thing we could think of... Drinking German beer! As it was our only full day to explore this beautiful city, we figured what could be more appropriate than spending the day trying local German beers??
We chose to go on a craft beer tasting/walking tour with Alternative Hamburg, which cost us €35.00 each. The tour took us to three different local venues; The Craft Beer Store, Rathuseum Microbrewery and Schmidtchen Schanze, where we tried a total of six local craft beer brewed locally in Hamburg.
Alternative Hamburg Tours:
Our tour gives you the chance to get in contact with the local brewery scene. Learn about the long history of beer in Hamburg and its relations to the harbor. On this tour, you will visit brewpubs, specialist stores, and bars and taste different styles of beers. Feel the passion of the brewers and taste their unique beers as we walk through the exciting nightlife and craft beer spots in St Pauli´s Sternschanze neighborhood

Germany: The Port of Hamburg
On June 13th I visited Hamburg and participated in an alternative port cruise organized by the youth department of the DGB trade union.
The Port of Hamburg (Hamburger Hafen) is a seaport and deep-water harbor in Hamburg on the river Elbe. The location is naturally advantaged by a branching Elbe, creating an ideal place for a port complex with warehousing and transhipment facilities. The extensive free port also enables toll-free shipping.
Founded on May 7th, 1189 by Frederick I for its strategic location, it has been Central Europe's main port for centuries and enabled Hamburg to develop early into a leading city of trade.
During the second half of the 19th century, Hamburg became Central Europe's main hub for transatlantic passenger and freight travel, and from 1871 onward, it was Germany's principal port of trade.
Now it is called Germany's Gateway to the World and is the largest port in Germany. It is the third-largest port of Europe (after the port of Rotterdam and the port of Antwerp).
Since the harbor is located in a distance of 110 kilometers from the mouth of the Elbe and the water level is influenced by the tides, some ships at times have difficulties accessing the port. Deepening of the river Elbe in response is very controversial for ecological reasons.
The handling of containers is an important activity. The economic crisis of 2009 also has an influence on these activities nowadays. For many dock workers there is less work to do.

Germany: Hundreds protest AfD party conference in Hamburg
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets to protest against the party conference of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) that was held at a technical school in the Hamburg district of Dulsberg on Friday.
Protesters can be seen chanting slogans and waving flags and banners outside.
Deniz Celik a representative of Germany's Die Linke (The Left) party, was also present at the protest, and said: we think it is unacceptable that the AfD, with their reactionary production hold their party conference here. We say AfD must go out of the schools. And we also want that AfD to get no places in Hamburg and in this area with their racism.
Hamburg state elections will be on February 23 and according to polls, AfD has 7 per cent, with SPD and Greens even at 29 per cent.

00:30 Sightseeing Tour
The best way to get an overview of the city is to hop on one of the red double-deckers. die-roten-doppeldecker.de
00:32 Dockland
This futuristic office building might not be the prettiest but it certainly offers a stunning view over the harbour from its top.
00:34 St. Michael’s Church
The „Michel“, as the locals call the tower of their beloved church, is one of the best viewpoints above the city. It’s 5 Euros to get up there.
00:36 Clouds Heaven’s Bar (Reeperbahn 1)
Right on top of the stunning Dancing Towers, this fancy rooftop bar offers great drinks and an exklusive view over the city. clouds-hamburg.de
00:38 Planten un Blomen Park
Its name is Low German and means „plants and flowers“. Pretty accurate. And a really pretty park.
00:39 Hamburg City Hall
One of the many beautiful giant renaissance buildings in Hamburg and home to its mayor.
00:41 Trostbrücke
One of the 2500 bridges in Hamburg. Yes, the city has more bridges than venice!
00:42 Bairro Alto (Schulterblatt 58a)
Hamburgs Portuguese quarter hosts lots of delicious restaurants. Our pick, Bairro Alto, is actually situated in another part of town. bairro-alto.de
00:43 Thai Oase (Große Freiheit 38)
You are into Karaoke? Then this is your place to be! As small as it is iconic.

00:46 Zum Schellfischposten
A traditional harbour pub should always be on your itinerary in Hamburg. This one is the oldest of the city.
00:48 Elbphilharmonie
Hamburgs latest landmark opened in 2016. Hamburgers gave it a nickname: Elphie. Its architecture is dizzying! elbphilharmonie.de
00:49 Elbchaussee, Strandperle
There’s no street in Germany with more millionaires than the Elbchaussee reaching from Ottensen to Blankenese. At Övelgönne it’s close to a very hip sandy beach. At its centre the legendary restaurant and bar Strandperle. strandperle-hamburg.de
00:53 Gängeviertel
A lively cultural and arts center with lots of galeries and exciting works of art in every corner and on every wall.
00:54 Rote Flora
The Rote Flora stands for the lively alternative scene but also became infamous as the major hotspot of the G20 riots.
00:55 Frau Hedis Tanzkaffee (Bei den Landungsbrücken 10)
A very fun way to start partying is to hop on Frau Hedis little boat and dance to all sorts of music while you are cruising through the harbour.
00:57 Schanzenviertel
The alternative party and bar center of Hamburg. Our favourite part of town to go out. The locals like to meet up on the street corners for the first few drinks before heading to the clubs, calling it „cornern“.
00:59 Das Verlies, Reeperbahn
The infamous Club de Sade, the oldest SM club in Europe, offers tourist tours in the early evenings under the name „Das Verlies“ ( ). A very special tour about the dark side of the world famous party district Reeperbahn.

Touring the Schanzenviertel in Hamburg Germany
Touring the Schanzenviertel in Hamburg Germany with Nina and Kate was a great afternoon adventure. I was told that the Schanzenviertel is a former working class neighborhood that has transitioned into the
epicenter for the hip Hamburg scene. It’s the locals pick for having some of the “coolest” bars, restaurants and boutiques. I loved the street art, the vibe and the cafes. We found a store that was selling shirts that said refugees welcome as about 400 Syrian refugees are arriving in Hamburg daily at this time.
Nina, Kate and I went a velo taxi tour in the morning, then to the new UNESCO site of Speicherstadt & Kontorhaus District. I really enjoyed my time in Hamburg!

STAPLES: HAMBURG with Daniel Prieß
Music video director, touring musician and all round legend Daniel Prieß, shows us his top 5 staple venues in Hamburg.
Historically, Hamburg has always been a city based around trade and commerce – but this certainly doesn’t mean it’s lacking in imagination or personality. Its financial stability allows artists and musicians to be truly creative, knowing there’s solid backing behind them, and the city’s economic prowess has seen global music brands, like Warner Music, base their operations here. It’s confident and fun, but never far from rebellious undertones expressed in Sternschanze’s colourful graffiti, or on stage at one of St. Pauli’s many alternative clubs.
